Silence prevailed in the past Due to superiority, dominance and fear

Yet, women stood together, Fighting for justice year after year Toady, we reap the benefits, The battle we have won, The era of fear and silence, To some extent has gone! Women were considered inferior, Rights they did not own, Many were branded 'minor',

Countless were slaved to the bone Even now certain women still suffer Because of the ignorance the West project, Our dress and scarf are mocked Show our Muslim women some respect! Society however, Creates a fashionable trend, But the strongest women will prosper, They will succeed in the end!

Much ado about Tik By Sanaa Petersen

W

e have seen or read many scary tales about the drug called Tik and its destruction. And yet we still seem drawn to this wonder. What exactly is it that is attracting us to something we clearly know will destroy us? Crystal meth or methamphetamine is a white powder that is purchased in drinking straws. These drinking straws are sold in small quantities to encourage affordability. It can be easily hidden underneath your school collar, in the fold of your sock, in your ticky pocket and just about any place. The selling price starts from as little as R12.00 and the "lollipop" which is a light bulb or a glass tube, commonly used in hospitals, are melted and reshaped. This lollipop is sold between R20 and R50. (The increased price depends on your desperation.) Tik can be used anywhere as it has no smell and produces white smoke. The powder is heated up to form a liquid then smoked aka chased. Tik

works instantaneous with the brain. The dopamine chemical in the brain which controls your pleasurable feelings are radically increased so in simple terms TIK WILL LEAVE YOU HOPPING LIKE A DELIRIOUS RABBIT. "Tik puts you on a high, your state of mind is enhanced and you feel like you can accomplish anything. You don't feel pain", explains Sarah*. Sarah is a 19 year old drug addict, who has voluntarily booked herself into the Horizons Drug Rehabilitation Centre. "I know this is my only chance as I don't want to go back to the same monotonous feeling. One hit is the same like all the thousand before. You loose your self-respect and you loose everything you love. I started experimenting with dagga when I was in Std 5 and in Std 6 I was using ecstasy and then I substituted it for alcohol. I cannot blame my addiction on abusive parents, siblings or family friends. In fact I was raised in a loving and structured environment. My daddy is a principal, my mommy a nurse and my big brother a lawyer. Education is paramount in our house. I loved dancing and going to clubs. I loved the social scene and needed to keep up with the fast lifestyle. And to keep up with a fast paced lifestyle and still succeed at school I needed help. That is how I got hooked on Tik. I didn't mind that it is made from rat poison, cleaning materials and other dangerous chemicals. I was only focused on clubbing and having fun. When my parents went to sleep in the evening I would use Tik to help me study. Once, high I could memorise a book and rewrite it perfectly the next day. Tik can keep you high for 8 hours at a time and during the school week I was not allowed to go clubbing. With this energy I would constantly clean my room. Tik users have the cleanest room. Tik can suppress your appetite for 5 -7 days, which is why you drastically loose weight. To camouflage my weight loss I used to dissolve Tik in a can of Coke cooldrink or drink litres of Sterri Stumpi Milkshake, yoghurt and eat lots of Rolo chocolates. When using drugs you become so clever and you learn to manipulate people. My parents used to give me pocket money and if I needed more I used to lie and cheat to them. My friends were all rich and my best friend's father was a dealer. And because I was her friend I got my drugs at a cheaper price and resold it for a profit. With this profit I could buy more drugs. On Saturdays we would tell our parents we were going ice skating and my daddy would drop

me at Grand West, Ice Rink. Once he is out of sight we would club our monies together and book a room at the City Lodge, where we could freely smoke. The other popular hotel we frequented was St Georges in Cape Town. It is easy and cheap to book a hotel room. I needed to take Tik more frequently and in higher doses before I felt any effect. After a little while I started hallucinating and when the drug subsided I was easily irritated, rude and aggressive. I thought I was loosing my mind and started taking heroin to relax me. Thank God, my parents found out and immediately stepped in to help and support me. I obviously rebelled and pretended I was in control of my life. Things got worst and I was diagnosed with kidney problems. At the Horizons rehab I have learnt the true meaning of love, self-respect and compassion. My message to the youth is You should not fool yourself with drugs. It will leave scars for life I am 19 years old and it is difficult for me to remember and execute simple tasks. Like the other day my mommy asked me to bring her the newspaper. She repeated the request thrice and instead of giving her the newspaper I gave her a cup. My body is constantly hurting and luckily, Tik has not seriously damaged my brain cells. I have an arduous journey ahead of me in trying to repair the damage. By me saying yes to drugs I have broken my spirit." *Name has been changed

I am here because there is no refuge, finally, from myself. Until I confront myself in the eyes and hearts of others, I am running. Until I suffer them to share my secrets, I have no safety from them. Afraid to be known, I can know neither Myself nor any other, I will be alone. Where else but in my common ground, Can I find such a mirror? Here, together, I can at last appear Clearly to myself, not as the giant of my Dreams, nor the dwarf of my fears, but As a person part of a whole, with my Share in it's purpose. In this ground I can take root and grow, Not alone anymore, as in death, But alive to myself and to others. RICHARD BEAUVAIS DAYTOP, Staten Island, 1965

The Honour of Women in Islam by Sanaa Petersen

Prof. Yusuf da Costa has recently launched an inspirational book called The Honour of Women in Islam. This book briefly and (yet) clearly explains the status of women in Pre-Islamic times in Arabia and Christianity. It depicts the life of several remarkable female figures in Islamic History including Mary mother of Jesus and Hagar hand-maiden to Sarah. When reading about their challenges and perseverance in adversity one cannot contain the overwhelming emotion of Allah's love, mercy and honour bestowed on WOMEN.

Pic: Yazzer Booley

Surprisingly, this book can be read in one sitting and a box of tissues is mandatory, especially when reading about the tender moment shared between the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his daughter Fatima (RA) and son in-law Ali (RA). Tears of appreciation and gratitude will be shed when a comparison is made between the Pre Islamic and Islamic times. One has to question - Has modernity blindly pushed us into the PreIslamic times? And in words of Prof. Da Costa, " The Position of women had been hidden for a very long time and it is about time that it is exposed in the public domain,”

Simply Finance Part 4

by Dr Anwah Nagia & Sanaa Petersen

Dear Dr Nagia, Why should we save? I think there should be a natural culture of saving. Not only to save for a 'rainy day', but for education, a home, hajj trip and any eventuality that you might need in your active or retired life. Most people who are formally employed either provide for their retirement with a pension or provident fund that is offered by the employer. Generally, we discover that when one reaches the age of retirement the monies are not sufficient. In addition to our pension or provident fund we should take out a supplementary or complimentary investment to make up for this shortfall.

Let me hasten to add that people must understand the cost implication of their investment if they are putting smaller amounts on a monthly basis, as it is wiser to invest smaller amounts in their home loans and debt redemption. I am by no means discouraging people to save small amounts, but I wonder if they are handling their financial matters more cost effectively? ….ON WOMEN

One can safely say that women in South Africa, and all over the world, are the most vulnerable and marginalized. It is conventionally said if the mother teaches a child, she teaches a nation. It is time that we in South Africa celebrate our women because it is Most people should save from their disposable income. our mothers and sisters that have added so much DISPOSABLE monies left over after we paid off our debts, namely credit cards, furniture, clothing accounts or value to the quality of life in the pre and post apartheid eras. We hope that society, generally, and in particular a bond. It is wise to try and increase your bond repayments. The longer your debt is outstanding the the "big" corporations elevate women to their rightful more interest it will accrue. After paying your debts and places in organisations, which they serve. For far too you have sufficient monies you can use that Disposable long we have perpetuated a kind of male dominance, Income - in a carefully thought out savings option vehicle. where women cannot lead an organisation. I am the To choose a good savings vehicle one has to use an first to accept and admit this within our various investment advisor who will understand your short to religious practices. There are various roles for men long-term goals to help you decide on the appropriate and women but we often implement these only when investment product for your money. You must take into pressurised to do so. It is my wish that women in consideration your access to liquidity and your ability to society be afforded the status that they deserve. move your investments in a flexible manner.

Ever noticed what lengths TV and Radio stations will go to for ..... money.

We all know that revenue generated from advertising "pays the rent". But should this be at any cost? Do we not draw a line as to what is tasteful, appealing, offensive or insulting? On the TV channels we SEE the extent to what advertisers will go to in order to promote their products using scantily dressed women etc which are harmful to the morality of our youth (both male and female) and small children. Our own two 'Muslim' radio stations also do not appear to verify whether an "ad" is in good or bad taste. One particular furniture manufacturer's advert comes to mind. This advert features a SMALL boy declaring how small children like to climb on tables, cupboards etc..etc, and concludes by demanding that furniture be bought only from this particular manufacturer ... ending the advert by saying that " you'll be a real BOZO if you buy it anywhere else". Who is this little boy addressing? Who buys the furniture for the house? What is a 'BOZO'? (A CLOWN is commonly referred to as 'BOZO') Then who is this child calling a clown? Another little boy .. or? This advert, however, is insulting the intelligence of adults, perhaps inadvertently. Should our (muslim) radio stations NOT first deliberate upon adverts to determine whether such advert meets with the criteria of being islamically in good taste and appealing, before looking at 'paying the rent or the bills'.

• Improves self confidence and self esteem • Connects you with your femininity in an increasingly androgynous society • Strengthen pelvic muscles • Prevent and relieve lower back problems • Improve posture • Enhance general flexibility and suppleness • Relieve stress The most distinguishing feature of belly dancing is certainly the isolated motions of the abdomen. These circular, rolling, angular and vibrating movements are all based on natural body movements and it is exactly this that makes belly-dancing such a safe form of exercise for people of any age. The flowing movements of hip drops, rolls and pivots that are done during belly dancing utilise the muscle groups in the abdomen, pelvis, spine and neck and rather than working against the body they work with the body. During belly dancing, the joints and ligaments in your lower back and hips are put through a full range of gentle, repetitive motions. If the movements are done correctly, the pelvis is tilted forward and these movements help to prevent lower back problems. It is not only the muscles in your lower body that are exercised. Your arms and shoulders are also exercised when doing the snakelike movements. If you have any medical problems or are pregnant, you should consult your doctor before attempting to belly dance. But, more importantly, belly dancing is a creative art, and every woman brings her own experience and personality to her dance. That's where it becomes alchemy, the ability to transform and transcend through a connection of body, and rhythm that is simultaneously primal and cosmic. For the dance is also an expression of emotion. From the ecstatic joy in the dynamic music, through the sensuality of smooth undulations and the power of the sharp hip movements, to the pulsing drum and the mystical veil, the moods and motions of the belly dance reflect the dancer's inner life and enhance her connection to her essential self. Community News "With our souls and our blood, we will defend you, oh Aqsa". This was the chant heard by my brothers and sisters at the march earlier this month. In the last issue of Community News I was deeply interested as this respected news agency posed the question that, "Were we truthful in our chant and if so did it help?" I am only part of our youth in our community yet I too stood in the massive march through the streets of Cape Town. On this memorable day I sincerely felt a part of something that could cause a change in the world. Many a time I read in this newspaper how we aim to empower our youth and encourage them to continue on

the righteous path of their religion. It is for this reason that I feel honoured in writing to you. Feeling that amazing atmosphere at the march was enough to encourage me to respond to the question posed in your last issue. Al-Aqsa still bleeds. We, at the Southern most point of Africa, echo our voices and pleas of help across borderlines in aid of those who innocently suffer at the hands of the Israelis. I am but a minor in this country yet I look up to those who have the power to make a difference. I look up to those whose voices can be heard and opinions voiced much louder than a mere echo. I appeal to people like Mr Pahad who has the right to do what is right and the responsibility of carrying out his duties to Islam by assisting those in need. We can easily blame the media for its deception in information with accordance to happenings to Al-Aqsa yet we have our own media, which should highlight the truth. This is an on-going battle and what small help we can offer whether it be by marching or simply alerting the public by means of media should by all means be done. There is no oppression without resistance

and as much resistance we can give, the less helpless our brothers and sisters in Islam will feel. An Intifada. An "uprising". The uprising of our Muslim community may not seem much but it is enough to give hope to those in dire need. So in saying this I intend to respond to your question and say we were truthful in our chant as it did make a difference. But let it not be that this is all we can do. Let us as a Muslim community act on our words and do whatever we can in resisting this enemy of Islam, the Israelis. In conclusion I leave you with something that I wish would reach out to my fellow Muslim youth and Insha-Allah touch their hearts. 'Arrogance in youth should never be seen as negative but rather as a determination to help those in need.' It is their hearts that chanted on our streets in Cape Town. "With our souls and our blood, we will protect you, oh Aqsa.”

Comforting words from the Greatest Gift to Humanity… THE GLORIOUS QURAN: S 16-v97. "Whosoever does right, whether male or female and is a believer, truly we shall quicken with good life and we shall pay them a recompense according to the best of what they do.” After having observed so many inhumane practices carried out against women and girl children throughout the world including Africa, Europe and America amongst men of all faiths and cultures, one cannot begin to imagine the need of wanting to cry out aloud for justice. COMFORTING WORDS: The Quran is the Greatest Gift of Allah to the Whole of Humanity, and its wisdom is of a unique kind. Briefly stated, the purpose of the Quran is to guard the previous revelations and restore the eternal TRUTH of Allah, to guide the entire human race to the straight path. Men and women are showered with equal status and honour. They are equally responsible for the well being of our sons and daughters, who will become the future parents of the world BACK TO OUR ROOTS: Rasu-lullah (SAW) prophesied about the last days and foretold that forgetfulness will overcome the ummah and that they will turn to disbelief in vast numbers. This will be one of the signs of Qiyaamah nearing upon the human race. The Holy Book offers clear, logical and completely viable suggestions for contemporary reform if applied with total devotion and sincerity.

As salaamu alaykum Yes , Algamdullilah, Moulood celebrations have reached the end of it's tenure. Since there is no evidence from the Quran and the Sunnah it is also about time. Forget the old adage of it is a "good bid'ah" because I shall relate a fatwa from Shaykhul Islam Bin Baz on this matter ,Insha-Allah. It is not permissible to celebrate the birthday of the Apostle (May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), or anybody else. In fact, it must be stopped, as it is an innovation in the religion. The Apostle of Allah neither celebrated it, nor commanded others to do this for himself. or for any one who died before him amongst the Prophets, for his daughters his wives, or his other relatives. The rightly guided Caliphs the Companions of the Prophet or the successors who rightly followed them did not celebrate this event, nor did any one of the muslim scholars in the centuries before. They knew the Sunnah of the Prophet best, they loved him more, and followed the Shari'a better than those who came after them. If celebrating his birthday was a good deed, they would have done it. We are commanded to follow and forbidden to innovate. This is because of the perfection of the Islamic religion and the Sufficiency of what Allah and His Messenger have given us and are accepted by Ahl-al-Sunna wal-jama'at- The Muslim community of the companions and those who followed them in the best way. It is related to the prophet that he said: He who innovates something in this matter of ours that is not of it, will have it rejected. (Transmitted by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). According to Muslim who reported: whoever does an act which is not in agreement with our matter, will have it rejected. In another tradition the Prophet said: You must keep to my Sunna and of the Sunna of the rightly-guided Caliphs, cling to it firmly... Beware of newly invented matters, for every new matter is an innovation and every innovation is misleading. He used to say in every Friday sermon: The best discourse is the Book of Allah and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad the Apostle of Allah, and the worst matter is that of innovation and every innovation is misleading. Thus, these traditions contain a strong caution against innovations and a warning that such an act is a deviation from the right course. The Prophet warned the people of the gravity of these innovations and of their bad consequences. There are many traditions adduced in this connection. And the Almighty has said: So take what the Messenger gives you, and refrain from what he prohibits you (59:7). Allah, Most High said: Then let those beware who withstand the Messenger's order, lest some trial befall them. or a grievous Chastisement be inflicted on them (24:63). Allah, the Almighty said. Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah an excellent exempler for him who hopes in Allah and the final day, and who remember Allah much. (33:21) And Allah, the Almighty said: This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you and have chosen for you Islam as your religion (5:3). This verse decisively indicates that the Almighty Allah has completed the religion for this Ummah, and has showered His blessings on them. His Prophet passed away only after he had imparted the complete message of Allah to the Ummah as well as his legislations concerning sayings and deeds. He also stressed that all things invented by people and then attributed to the religion of Islam are innovations and to be rejected, even if their inventors did so in good faith. It is established that the Companions of the Prophet and the righteous successors after them warned the people against innovations as they add to Islam and legislate what is not permitted by Allah, in line with the enemies of Allah such as the Jews and the Christians who added to their religion and innovated what was not allowed by Allah. Moreover, to admit innovation in Islam is incomplete and imperfect. Such a belief is not only an evil but contradicts the following verse: This day have I perfected your religion for you. And the sayings of the Prophet which warn us against innovations. To celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Prophet and the others, means that the Religion is not perfected by Allaah (the Glorious, the Almighty) for this Ummah, and the Apostle did not impart to the people what was necessary regarding their religious duties, till these late ones appeared and invented in the religion what is not permitted by Allah, thinking that this would bring them nearer to Allah. Undoubtedly, this is a great danger and is tantamount to criticzing Allah the Almighty and the Prophet (Peace be upon him): whereas Allah the Almighty has already completed the religion and perfected His grace, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) has conveyed the message openly and informed the Ummah of all such ways that will lead them to the Paradise and save them from Hell-fire. It is authentically reported that the Messenger of Allah has said: Beware of extravagance in the Religion: It has caused the people before you to perish. He also said: Do not lavish praise on me as the Christians did with the son of Maryam. I am just a bondman. So Simply say: The bondman of Allah and His Messenger (Transmitted by Bukhari). It is curious to note that a great many people paritcipate most actively in these celebrations and defend them vehemently, while they sit back from attending the obligatory forms of worship such as daily and Friday prayers. They are not even ashamed of this, nor do they realize that they are committing a great evil. Undoubtedly, this shows the weakness of their faith, their short-sightedness, and the deeply ingrained rust on their hearts because of sins and disobedience. We ask Allah's protection for us and for all the Muslims And May Allah Shower His blessings and mercy upon our prophet Muhammad, his posterity and his Companions. ABDUL AZIZ BIN ABDULLAH BIN BAZ GENERAL PRESIDENT, THE PRESIDENCY OF ISLAMIC RESEARCH, IFTA, DAWA AND INSTRUCTION. Was salaam

WHITE BLACK OR RED ... WE ARE SPECIAL

A

lgamdullilaah, all praise be to Allah (swt) who protected me in my journey and granted me all that I have.

On June 25, 2005 I left for New York to participate in the 'FACE TO FACE' INTERFAITH YOUTH CAMP. Leaving my family behind was something very new to me. In fact, everything I did for the following 2 weeks was a first. My departure was an emotional one for my family and friends. This was the beginning of my independence. I was ready to pick up the pebbles of my future. After an 18 hour long flight and a 2 hour bus drive we arrived at our camp site. I was very nervous as I did not know what to expect. We were

INSAAF ABDOL, Grade 11, AL-AZHAR HIGH SCHOOL. warmly received by our host and all the other youth from America, Northern Ireland, Israel and Palestine. During the past two weeks of dialogue with the 60 participants I realised that irrespective of whether we are Muslim, Christian or Jewish. We all are special. And by honestly communicating with each other all those past stereotyped barriers between faiths were broken down , feelings of extreme hate turned into love, misunderstanding and confusion was turned into respect. The most rewarding memory of the camp was to 'lead' solaah for 2 Muslim girls who had never had the opportunity before. Having been through this camp, I have a new and more positive outlook on life. I would like to thank my wonderful teacher, Mr K Ruiters and my parents, family and friends for their support .

Starving Nigeria Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim AsSalaamun 'alaikum waRahmatullahi waBarakatuh

PALESTINE CRISIS APPEAL The absolute horror that has befallen innocent men, women and children in Palestine needs no introduction.

Dear Brothers & Sisters, Children across Niger and Northern Mali are starving as the world ignores appeals for help. Around 150,000 children will die soon without emergency food aid. Time is critical as millions of people are already weak from their struggle to survive over the last few months. One elder in a Niger village told Islamic Relief staff, "We are in desperate need of food straight away. Our children are dying. This is the worst drought Niger has ever experienced."

Israel's destruction of Palestine homes has been condemned as 'war crimes' leaving tens of thousands homeless. To add to their misery, two out of three families in Gaza live below the poverty line. That's more than 600,000 people in Gaza alone facing real hunger. A third of all Palestinians killed are children, and all this is enough to tell us that Muslims and all caring people everywhere have a duty to help the suffering people in Palestine. Muslim Hands would like to inform you that the "CRISIS IN PALESTINE" Appeal is now in full swing and calls upon you to once again unite for our brothers & sisters in Palestine. Your help is desperately needed now, more that ever before.
