Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Engagement: In this lesson, the students will be engaged by actively participating in measuring objects that they have brought from their homes. Also, they will be engaged by exploring the flipped classroom page. Representation: The student will be presented with the new content they will be learning, through the flipped classroom. The students will have to listen to an audio recording and watch a BrainPop video. Action and Expression: The students will be interacting through the use of technology when they explore the flipped classroom page. They will be directed to bring in two objects from home that are different lengths and can be measured. At the end of this lesson, they will engage in filling out a data chart with the entire class on the objects that were measured. Lesson idea implementation: This lesson will be centered around measurement. The week before the lesson, the teacher will teach the students how to estimate a length using feet and inches. On the Friday before the week of the lesson, the teacher will tell the students for homework they need to visit the flipped classroom page and complete the task for that date. If a student doesn’t have access to technology, the teacher will provide the student with a transcript of the activity to take home. The activity on the flipped classroom will be the introduction to the standard they will be learning and will build on what they have learned. The lesson will last for three days. The flipped classroom will introduce the students to the lesson. The students will listen to an audio recording of the teacher explaining that they will be comparing the length of two different objects. In the audio recording the teacher will tell the students to first watch the BrainPop video, and then find two objects in their house that can be measure by length and bring it to class on Monday. The teacher will state examples of what the students could bring to class. On Monday, the teacher will introduce the lesson and demonstrate how to compare the lengths of two objects using a ruler. After, the teacher will have the students measure their own objects they brought to class. On Tuesday, the teacher will reiterate what they are learning, and then place the students in groups. In the groups, the students will take turns measuring each other’s objects. Summer 2017_SJB

Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools After, the class will come together and make a chart on the different items and their measurements. On Wednesday, the students will be given a summative assessment on what they have learned. The summative assessment will be a worksheet, in which they have to measure items with a ruler.

Importance of technology: - Using the classroom blog, the students are able to learn outside of the classroom. The blog can benefit students, by providing them with the material learned in class. Also, this blog benefits parents, because they are able to know what their child is learning and be involved in their education. If the classroom blog isn’t implemented, students could forget what they are learning in the classroom, and some parents may not be able to be involved in their child’s education. For example, some parents work multiple jobs, and aren’t able to physically be involved in the classroom. The other technology I will use in this lesson, is the BrainPop video.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: - By having a classroom blog, there are several precautions I must take. Due to the blog being accessed on the web, there are information that can’t be accessed by all viewers. For this activity, in my audio recording I have to ensure that I don’t state the names of any students, the school’s location, and any confidential information that can be seen by anyone that views my blog. When my students post on the classroom blog throughout the year, I must protect the students’ work by making the post private and creating a password for only the parents, and students can have access. Reflective Practice: - I believe that this activity could impact the learning of students, by having them engage in content outside of the classroom. Also, I believe this lesson will excite the students and make them eager to learn, because they are able to bring objects from their home into class. To further extend this lesson, I would have the students use different standard units to measure the objects, besides just a ruler.
