Classical Writing: Homer Part B Weekly Lessons for Skill Level 6 Analysis and Imitation: Day One: (Routine) A. Reading the model 1. Read Silently or Mom reads out loud for modeling. -Call attention to punctuation and appropriate pauses and expression/phrasing 2. Student reads out loud for elocution (or focus on one paragraph/section read perfectly). B. Student narrates orally C. Discussion 1.Who are the main characters? 2. What are they like? 3. What is the problem/crisis or what does the main character want? 4. What is hindering the main character from getting what he wants? 5. What do the characters say/think to themselves? To each other? 6. How is the problem solved? 7. What is the point of the story? 8. **Note good and bad things about the model. (Changes with each skill level) D. Identify the scenes orally using Theon’s 6 components. Are the scenes single or multi-paragraph? Be able to tell the difference between a scene and a paragraph. Day Two: (Routine) A. Vocabulary Analysis (combine with Simply Spelling analysis)–use worksheet 1. Choose 3-4 words for analysis: Alphabetize, study spelling, part of speech, look up word in dictionary, write definition, use thesaurus or brainstorm synonyms. Day Three: (Routine) A. Six-Sentence Shuffle (use worksheet). Chose 1-2 sentences from model. Day Four: (Changes with each skill level) A. Paraphrase by subtraction B. Dictation Writing Project: Skill Level 6 Step One: Analyze. Divide into Acts. Note the number of scenes in each Act in outline form. Write 2-3 sentence summary for each scene. Look for patterns of repetition. Step Two: Rearrange outline for “In Media Res”. Choose climax act and then proceed from the beginning, followed by the conclusion. Keep in mind which facts audience does NOT know because of rearrangement and who should tell the flashback (1st or 3rd person). Step Three: Draft. (324 in Core book). 1. Rewrite opening scene; need “hook.” Author’s emphasis important. 2. Consider what info is out of context. 3. Read summary sentence outline to see if story still makes sense. 4. Amplify deficiencies and remove redundancies. Step Four: Edit using Homer Protocol(325 in Core book). Smooth summary sentences. Amplify as desired, especially new introductory scene.
