Letter from the

President More than a new School Year at CIU September 2009 Dear friend of CIU, You can feel the energy and excitement in the air at Columbia International University! If you could somehow transport yourself here, you could personally experience it. Our deans tried to figure out a way to package the enthusiasm on campus in order to put it in the envelope along with this letter! Instead, I’ll do my best to describe it in words.

Dr. Bill Jones

Undergraduate Graduate School Seminary & School of Missions Ben Lippen School 89.7 WMHK New Life 91.9 7435 Monticello Road P.O. Box 3122 Columbia, SC 29230-3122 803.754.4100 800.777.2227 803.786.4209 Fax www.ciu.edu

First, as the 2009-2010 school year began, we experienced a heartwarming feeling as we watched upperclassmen in the Undergraduate School welcome the freshmen and make them feel at home by helping them move into the residence halls. After all, the first year of college can intimidate even the most confident of young people. The CIU Seminary & School of Missions and the CIU Graduate School faculty and students also welcomed new students ready to further their education for the work God called them to do. But the excitement goes beyond the beginning of a new school year. We find ourselves in the midst of a major campus expansion to accommodate future growth. Construction equipment daily weaves its way through campus developing the first phase of the project — student housing for married and graduate students who currently live off campus. Living on campus more effectively integrates these students into campus life and affords them opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship that undergraduate students in the residence halls already enjoy.

…the excitement goes beyond the beginning of a new school year. We find ourselves in the midst of a major campus expansion to accommodate future growth.

Another important piece of the campus expansion plan features the addition of athletic facilities as we pursue membership in an intercollegiate sports association. The facilities also open the possibilities for the Undergraduate School students to participate in a physical fitness program, a long held value as many alumni can recall the P.E. points they were required to earn. We want our students and graduates “fit to serve” spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically.

over, please

The campus expansion plan also positions our campus infrastructure. Once we complete the current site development, we will have an area on which to construct future academic buildings to better educate our students. In addition to the campus expansion project, we also had two of the residence halls undergo major renovations. Crews worked hard in the South Carolina heat to completely modernize East Residence Hall and add a new roof to West Residence Hall. All of this construction generates an electric atmosphere on campus that touches not only the students, faculty and staff, but South Carolina as well. Our expansion spurred quite of bit of media attention statewide. God is also blessing us through faithful donors such as you. Despite a global recession, we once again finished the fiscal year in the black. One area that we ask you to continue to pray about involves the upcoming December report from one of our accrediting agencies, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). At that time they will inform us of their decision to reaffirm our accreditation, extending it for another 10 years. Our gratitude overflows for all God’s blessings. May we always be careful to give Him the praise. It is not by our power that great things are happening at CIU, but the Spirit of God who enables God’s servants to do God’s work. As our CIU 2009-2010 year verse reminds us:

East Residence Hall underwent a major renovation and modernization over the summer.

So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit’ says the LORD Almighty.” (Zechariah 4:6) Rejoice with me in God’s provision for CIU through the prayers and financial generosity of people like you. We will keep you updated throughout the school year as the excitement continues to sweep across campus. But better yet, visit the campus and experience it for yourself! Zechariah 4:6

William H. Jones President PS By the way, be sure to pass the word along about the upcoming CIU Preview Days this fall. Direct future students to CIU.edu for details.
