Who Is Killing Black Women in Florence and Why? By Rashmia Smith, The Community Times Special to The Chronicle Florence- Missing women, high profile cases of unexplainable murders and decomposed bodies all sound like things you would see on shows like The Wire and CSI. However, in the last three months (since August 2008) that has been the scenario in Florence, but unlike the television shows it has been AfricanAmerican women in the community who have fallen victim. According to the City of Florence Chief of Police Anson Shells, there were five homicides in 2007. Now late October 2008, there have already been five homicides, three of them Black women, with “more expected,” one woman’s disappearance, Jannie Mae Dixon, is still being investigated. As the entire community has already heard from news reports, this past Monday police discovered the human remains of two women. According to SCNow.com, autopsy reports Wednesday confirmed the remains to be African-American women. The police report states, during the search [of the area] the officer detected an odor and observed a large square shaped hole that had been dug. Inside the hole there appeared to be an object wrapped in a plastic bag that was under some vehicle tires and other debris. In an interview with Chief Shells, he tells us, “We [the Police Department] have asked SLED to come in and help to do the investigation.” Chief Shells explains, “Both bodies were buried; one was…put in a ditch and covered in dirt with only a portion of the body exposed, and the other was basically wrapped in a blanket or sheet and then tossed in the ditch and then covered with debris…both [bodies] were in the 500 block of Gaillard Street.” Chief Shells, who came to the Florence Police Department in 2001 states, “There have been a total of 36 homicides since 2001, and of those all but 2

have involved a black victim and a black assailant.” That means 34 of the 36 homicides in Florence alone, has been ‘Black on Black’ crime, with the exception of the murder of the elderly white woman on Maple Park committed by a black youth. I n the last three months all of the high profile homicides have been black women. Early August 2008, Jannie Mae Dixon, 35, of Aiken Drive was reported missing by her sister, Joyce Dixon, to Florence Police. According to the police report, the family has not seen Jannie for three weeks. Joyce Dixon advised police her sister

Joretha Lynn Kirk, 52, of Gaillard Street was reported missing by her sister, Willette Burrell, to Florence Police. According to the police report, Kirk and her boyfriend moved into the location the afternoon of October 9th, and later that evening Kirk left and did not return. Kirk’s boyfriend, Robert Durhn, stated she left the residence with an unidentified black female walking in an unknown direction. She was last seen wearing a peach colored pair of pants, a peach tone shirt, and a pair of black shoes. Durhn stated that they did not unpack anything, and

From Coast to Coast, Black Americans Savor a Historic Moment By: Jackie Jones, BlackAmericaWeb.com When Barack Obama went over the top in electoral votes, Carol West screamed with joy. West, who recently moved to Lake Wylie, S.C., called her daughter in Washington, D.C., who had a baby five months ago, and told her, “Our babies can become president!” For West, Obama’s victory was especially important for young, black Americans to give them a sense of hope. "It's a black man in a White House," said William Patterson of Clinton, Md., who watched the election at home. Asked if he thought he'd ever live to see a black man become president, the 61-year-old Patterson said, "No. It's something else."

Chief Shells does have a drug problem and she has checked her local hang out areas in North Florence. Joyce Dixon stated to police that it was unlike her sister to be missing for so long and has never been away from home for more than a day or two. No body has been found in connection to this investigation. Chief Shells tells us, although they have received information that Jannie Dixon may be in other areas, the case is still under investigation at this time. Late August 2008, Willie Mae Hayes, 69, of Liberty Street was reported missing by her daughter, Wilma Epps, to Florence Police. According to the police report, Epps reported her mother did not report to work the morning of August 25th and her car and television were missing from the residence. It was later discovered that the victim’s purse and driver’s license were still at the residence. Epps’ brother (David Hayes) stated he arrived to the scene and noticed a window screen off an east side kitchen window and a green blind rod on the ground underneath the same window. CPL T. Ford later found the missing vehicle abandoned on Roughfork Street. Within days the body of Willie Mae Hayes was found on Gaillard Street. Four suspects, two of whom age 14, have been charged with her death. September 2008, Rachel Samuel, 51, of Campbell Street was reported missing by her sister, Liz Samuel, to Florence Police. According to the police report, Rachel Samuel had not been seen or heard from in a month. Rachel Samuel’s last known whereabouts was a dental appointment in Florence. October 2008,

Kirk did not take anything with her. It was also noted that Kirk used drugs. S C N o w . c o m reports the three women – Samuel, Kirk, and Dixon – were all connected. Samuel and Kirk were allegedly friends, while Dixon was Kirk’s cousin. With the high number of homicides in the later part of the year members of the community want to know why this is all happening, and is “big city crime” coming to Florence? When asked if he believed the murders were gang related in any way Chief Shells replied, “We cannot commit to the idea that all the murders are gang related.” Chief Shells tells us the crime rate in Florence is no different than the crime rate in Columbia. In response to the outbreak of crime against women in the community Chief Shells advises all citizens to, “Be aware of your surroundings, and be careful when you go out.” Chief Shells does not advise or oppose community members legally owning weapons, but he does add, “Make sure you have the proper registration, learn how to use it, and get all the necessary training.” At press time no suspects have been questioned or arrested in the investigation of the two bodies found on Gaillard Street or in the cases of the three missing women. Anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of the three missing Florence women is asked to call the police department at (843) 665-3191 or Crime Stoppers of the Pee Dee at (843) 667-TIPS (8477) or (866) 369-TIPS (8477). Callers need not reveal their identities.

In the east, there was partying in the street from Times Square in New York to State College, Pa., the home of Penn State University, to the historically black U Street corridor in northwest Washington, D.C. Hundreds of residents spilled into the streets near the White House, carrying balloons, banging on drums and chanting "Bush is gone!" Along U Street, once known as America's Black Broadway for its thriving black-owned shops and theaters, men stood on car roofs, waving American flags and Obama posters. Nearby, at historically black Howard University, hundreds of students erupted in cheers, broke into song and chanted, "Yes, we did!" "That was fast. I was thinking it would be Friday before we would know anything," said Sean Gibbs, an Army captain based at Fort Gordon, Ga., who served two tours of duty in Iraq. "Now I can look my son in the eye and honestly tell him that he can be the President of the United States without it sounding like a prepared statement. What makes me so proud as an American is that in some other country there's a hater saying to himself, "Just when we thought we had the Americans on the ropes, they go a pull something like this." "I'm cautious about this, though, Gibbs added. "Look at what's on his plate. A war on two fronts, an economy that looks like Amy Winehouse, and racism with a blown cover. The beauty of rock bottom is that there's nowhere to go but up." Emmanuel and Brittani Soba, a young couple who voted for the first time Tuesday, had seen Obama just the night before at a rally in Charlotte after standing in the rain for four hours with their threeyear-old son and infant daughter. Emmanuel Soba shook Obama’s hand and shot several photos of the Democratic nominee during his speech. He and his wife later took down the sign from the podium and plan to have it framed in their home. Tuesday night, after attending an election watch party at an Obama campaign office, returned to West’s home in Lake Wylie and videotaped Obama's acceptance speech and called relatives around the country. Author Patrice Gaines, a contributor to BlackAmericaWeb.com and an Obama volunteer, who attended the campaign watch party said that when Obama cinched the victory, a white female volunteer hugged her and shouted, "'Thank you, Jesus.' I thought I was in church." But all the reaction wasn’t universally celebratory.

Even after the election had been declared for Obama, the extremely conservative blog NewsMax.com sent several statements, including comments from strategist Dick Morris suggesting McCain could still win the election. And while Obama supporters at Grant Park in Chicago applauded politely when he announced he had received a conciliatory concession phone call from Republican opponent John McCain, the GOP contender’s supporters booed when he announced he had called Obama to concede. Writing for the blog, The Kitchen Table, Princeton University Professor Melissa Harris Lacewell said the key to the election, in her mind was Ohio and she had known since 2004 when Democrat John Kerry lost the state to George W. Bush. "I went back to the hotel that night believing that we just had to win. How could so many overcome so much just to lose? In the end we lost Ohio under difficult and ugly circumstances. Ohio in 2004 was clouded by the same fraud as Florida in 2000. "So tonight's Ohio win is about more than just Obama' Harris Lacewell wrote. "The Ohio win was made possible by citizens in Ohio who threw out Ken Blackwell. Ohio was made possible by C o n g r e s s w o m a n Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who did not live to see the fruition of her work to make voting in Ohio fair. Ohio is a bellwether for a new kind of U.S. politics." In Cleveland, Obama supporters gathered at a house party and held champagne flutes above their heads for a toast. "To the first African-American president in the history of the United States!" they shouted. In Tampa, Fla., cheers and applause broke out in a crowded bar as CNN called the race for Obama. The blare of cars honking outside wafted through the bar's open front door.

landslide!" shouted 51-yearold Mark Bias, who was dressed in a tall satin Uncle Sam hat and red, white and blue cape. "This means that America will be back on the right track again," said Bias, who coowns what he described as a "gay pride" shop. At Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King preached, Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights hero, was emotional as he took the pulpit before Obama's victory was announced. He said he was hardly able to believe that 40 years after he was left beaten and bloody on an Alabama bridge as he marched for the right for blacks to vote, he had cast a ballot for Obama. "This is a great night," he said. "It is an unbelievable night. It is a night of thanksgiving." “America has finally shown that it can not only talk the talk but walk the walk, “said Lorna Green of Landover, Md. Green said her polling place in the Kentland neighborhood of Landover is usually fairly empty when she goes to vote, but on Tuesday, there were 300 people in line and she waited two hours to vote. The line was equally long when she left, she said. “He is a proud black Man, a husband and a father. “Obama has brought to this country an energy and a hope that has reached all Americans regardless of race, age or party affiliation. People who have not voted before or voted in years stood in line up to ten hours to be part of this election,” Green said. “And Obama has reached out to all of us to work together to help solve this nation's problems. He conducted a campaign with intelligence and dignity that went beyond race. It has earned America respect around the world. Something we have not had for years.” Associated Press contributed to this report.

Obama Wins; Becomes First Black Obama Built His Win on Minority Support President In U.S. History By DAVID ESPO AP Special Correspondent WASHINGTON (AP) -Barack Obama swept to victory as the nation's first black president Tuesday night in an electoral college landslide that overcame racial barriers as old as America itself. The son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, the Democratic senator from Illinois sealed his historic triumph by defeating Republican Sen. John McCain in a string of wins in hard-fought battleground states - Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Iowa. A huge crowd in Grant Park in Obama's home town of Chicago erupted in jubilation at the news of his victory. Some wept. McCain called his former rival to concede defeat - and the end of his own 10-year quest for the White House. "The American people have spoken, and spoken clearly," McCain told disappointed supporters in Arizona. Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, will take their oaths of office as president and vice president on Jan. 20, 2009. As the 44th president, Obama will move into the Oval Office as leader of a country that is almost certainly in recession, and fighting two long wars, one in Iraq, the other in Afghanistan. The popular vote was close, but not the count in the Electoral College, where it mattered most. There, Obama's audacious decision to contest McCain in states that hadn't gone Democratic in years paid rich dividends. Obama has said his first order of presidential business will be to tackle the economy. He has also pledged to withdraw most U.S. combat troops from Iraq within 16 months. Fellow Democrats rode his coattails to larger majorities in both houses of Congress. They defeated incumbent Republicans and won open seats by turn. The 47-year-old Illinois senator was little known just four years ago. A widely praised speech at the Democratic National Convention, delivered when he was merely a candidate for the Senate, changed that. Overnight he became a sought-after surrogate campaigner, and he had scarcely settled into his Senate seat when he began preparing for his run for the White House. A survey of voters leaving polling places on Tuesday showed the economy was by far the top Election Day issue. Six in 10 voters said so, and none of the other top issues energy, Iraq, terrorism and health care - was picked by more than one in 10. "May God bless whoever wins tonight," President Bush told dinner guests at the White House, where his tenure runs out on Jan. 20. The Democratic leaders of Congress celebrated in Washington. "It is not a mandate for a party or ideology but a mandate for change," said Senate Majority leader Harry Reid of Nevada. Said Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California: "Tonight the American people have called for a new direction. They have called for change in America." Shortly after 11 p.m. in the East, The Associated Press count showed Obama with 338 electoral votes, well over the 270 needed for victory. McCain had 127 after winning states that comprised the normal Republican base. The nationwide popular vote was remarkably close. Totals from 58 percent of the nation's precincts showed Obama with 51 percent and McCain with 47.9. Interviews with voters suggested that almost six in 10 women were backing Obama

nationwide, while men leaned his way by a narrow margin. Just over half of whites supported McCain, giving him a slim advantage in a group that Bush carried overwhelmingly in 2004. The results of the AP survey were based on a preliminary partial sample of nearly 10,000 voters in Election Day polls and in telephone interviews over the past week for early voters. Democrats also acclaimed Senate successes by former Gov. Mark Warner in Virginia, Rep. Tom Udall in New Mexico and Rep. Mark Udall in Colorado. All won seats left open by Republican retirements. In New Hampshire, former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen defeated Republican Sen. John Sununu in a rematch of their 2002 race, and Sen. Elizabeth Dole fell to Democrat Kay Hagan in North Carolina. Democrats also looked for gains in the House. They defeated Republican incumbents Rep. Tom Feeney and Ric Keller in Florida, 22-year veteran Chris Shays in

Connecticut and Rep. Robin Hayes in North Carolina. At least two Democrats lost their seats. Rep. Kevin Mahoney fell after admitting to two extramarital affairs while serving his first term in Florida. In Louisiana, Democratic Rep. Don Cazayoux lost the seat he had won in a special election six months ago. The resurgent Democrats also elected a governor in one of the nation's traditional bellwether states when Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon won his race. The White House was the main prize of the night on which 35 Senate seats and all 435 House seats were at stake. A dozen states elected governors, and ballots across the country were dotted with issues ranging from taxes to gay rights. An estimated 187 million voters were registered, and in an indication of interest in the battle for the White House, 40 million or so had already voted as Election Day dawned.

THE HIP-HOP VOTE PROPELS BARACK OBAMA TO THE WHITE HOUSE New York, N.Y. - November 4th, 2008 - In a sweeping and historical victory tonight, Senator Barack Obama was elected to be the next president of the United States of America. The largest voting constituency to usher in this progressive leader for change was the hip-hop vote, 18-35 year olds who are brand loyal to hip-hop culture. In consistent and telling numbers, exit polls in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Connecticut conducted by major television networks reported that 18-29 year olds voted in record numbers making their voices heard for Barack Obama. "Tonight, the hip-hop generation made history," emphasized Reverend Lennox Yearwood, Jr, President of the Hip Hop Caucus. "In the 60's, young people had to be revolutionary, but in the 21st century we have decided to be 'solution-ary.' We have come out in large numbers to not only change America, but to change the world. We have made America respect our vote!" "What we are witnessing today is the game changing impact of the hip-hop vote," asserted Valeisha Butterfield, Executive Director of the HipHop Summit Action Network (HSAN). "Our grassroots efforts to get out the vote paid off tremendously. Young adults from every part of the United States shattered

all records and expectations. I'm so proud of my generation stepping up to the plate." "Tonight, we all witnessed the transformation of American society," declared Dr. Benjamin Chavis, President/CEO of HSAN. "The early results of the presidential election verifies that the hip-hop generation is a responsible and caring generation. Hip-hop artists and icons, male and female, all worked hard to make sure the issues and the interests of young people were represented. President Elect Obama now has a serious mandate from the hip-hop generation. Hip-hop transcends race and will continue to be a force for change, not only in America, but also throughout the world." On October 18, the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, in partnership with the Hip Hop Caucus launched an 18-city RESPECT MY VOTE! Get Out The Vote Bus Tour with hip-hop superstars T.I., Jay Z, Russell Simmons, Keyshia Cole, T Pain and others, urging potential first time young voters and all voters to Get Out The Vote. The bus tour hit battleground states throughout the country and culminated in Toledo, OH. and Detroit, MI today, Election Day. Multi-platinum hip-hop star and actor, T. I., was the official spokesperson of the tour and took the RESPECT MY VOTE! bus to vote early in Atlanta, GA.last week.

Cass,

WASHINGTON - Barack Obama soaked up most of the votes from the nation's blacks, Hispanics and women and siphoned off enough white support to leave John McCain with no way to win. Exit polls showed that McCain won the votes of 55 percent of white voters, whose strong support has been vital to the success of winning Republican presidential candidates. But he didn't get a wide enough margin to compensate for the lopsided support that Obama drew from other voters who make up a quarter of the electorate. McCain and Obama split whites across the U.S. except in the South, where McCain got twice as many white votes as Obama. Southern whites had favored Republican George Bush by similar margins in his 2000 and 2004 wins. Obama, who will become the first black president and at age 47 one of the youngest, ran away with the youth vote. He won the under-30 crowd by 34 percentage points, even better than Democrat Bill Clinton's 19-point advantage when he defeated Bob Dole in 1996. He was the choice of nearly seven in 10 first-time voters of all ages. Forty percent of those voting called themselves Democrats - a historically high number - and they overwhelmingly chose Obama. He also held a significant edge among the quarter of voters who called themselves independents. McCain, 72, was the choice of just over half of senior citizens, coveted for their vigilance in going to the polls. Those 65 years and older were 16 percent of all voters, similar in influence to people under 30. McCain drew some of his strongest support from white, working-class voters, winning 58 percent of their vote. But it was shy of the 23-point margin by which Bush won the votes of whites without a college degree in 2004. Enthusiasm clearly was on Obama's side: Almost six in 10 of his voters said they were excited about what Obama would do as president. Fewer than three in 10 McCain voters felt that way about their man, according to the exit polls. Curt Babura, a 31-year-old cook from Cleveland, said he never bothered to vote before casting his ballot for Obama. "When he talks it feels like he's talking to you," Babura said.

Fear played no favorites. Among both Obama and McCain voters, about half said they were scared of what the candidate they opposed would do as president. "I'm scared to death of the Democratic Party this year, particularly Barack Obama," said Robert Zannini, a 73-year-old retired Air Force pilot from Montgomery, Ala. "Everything he says seems to lead to socialism." Obama drew the votes of two-thirds of Hispanic voters - heavily courted by both candidates - and 95 percent of blacks who went to the polls. He seemed to inspire optimism about race in America. About 60 percent of Obama's voters believe race relations will improve over the next few years, and only 7 percent predict they will deteriorate. In contrast, almost two-thirds of McCain's voters expected racial tensions to stay the same or worsen. In both camps, one voter out of five acknowledged that the candidates' race was a factor in their vote, but almost no one said it was the most important factor. A healthy lead among women voters typically is key to a Democratic presidential victory, and Obama attracted 56 percent of their votes. He split the overall male vote with McCain. Obama cleaned up with his effort to mobilize potential supporters who had never voted before. Among firsttime voters, one in five was black, almost twice the proportion of blacks among voters overall. Another one in five was Hispanic. Two-thirds of new voters were under 30. Almost half were Democrats, and a third called themselves independents. Twenty-six-year-old Jennifer Sunderlin, who typically votes Republican, said she didn't stick with her usual party this election. "Don't tell my Dad, but I voted for Barack Obama," said Sunderlin, of Albany,

N.Y. She said she was turned off by McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. She wasn't alone. Four in 10 voters overall said Palin was an important factor in deciding whom to vote for, and this group was about as likely to vote for Obama as McCain. But nine in 10 Republicans calling Palin's selection important were voting for McCain. A third of voters said the quality that mattered most to them was the candidates' ability to bring change - the mantra of Obama's campaign. But almost as many cited the candidates' values, and they mostly voted McCain, as did the vast majority of those who honed in on experience. "I don't think Obama knows what he's doing," said Craig Burnett, 55, a Republican in Hagerstown, Md. "He's too young and inexperienced." Two-thirds of voters worried about how to pay for their health care and even more feared terrorists will attack the U.S. again. But the nation's troubled economy weighed heaviest on their minds. Six in 10 voters picked the economy as the most important issue facing the nation. None of the four other issues listed by exit pollsters - energy, war in Iraq, terrorism and health care - was chosen by more than one in 10 people. Almost everyone agreed the economy is in either a "poor" or "not good" condition. The results were from exit polling by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International for The Associated Press and television networks conducted in 300 precincts nationally. The preliminary data was based on 17,834 voters, including telephone polling of 2,407 people who voted early, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 1 percentage point for the entire sample, smaller for subgroups. --AP News Survey Specialist Dennis Junius contributed to this report.

Barack Obama Elected America's First Black President By. Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief WASHINGTON(NNPA) – After a fierce fight of two years to change the course of history, U. S. Senator Barack Obama has been elected the first African-American president of the United States. His win culminates an American history that expands from Black slavery to Jim Crow to a modern day civil rights movement still marked by institutional racism. “America is in the process and has taken the first step of turning from darkness unto light, turning from war unto piece, turning from exploitation of the poor by the powerful to equal opportunity and economic justice,” said civil rights icon the Rev. Joseph Lowery in an interview. “It’s a great moment for America.” In awe, America has paused to celebrate this victory. “If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, if you’re still wondering if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, if you still question the power of our Democracy, tonight is your answer,” Obama began his victory speech before a screaming Chicago crowd of more than 250,000. “It’s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches and other places like I’ve never seen, people who waited three hours, four hours, many for the first time in their lives because they believed that this time…That their voices could be that difference.” He recalled his campaign strategy, which involved connecting people from all walks of life from both traditionally Democratic and Republican states. ''It was spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, Native-American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled, Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states, we are and always will be the Unites States of America,” he said as Blacks and Whites celebrated the win together. In an exclusive election eve message to Black leaders, Obama credited Black voters for his pending win, saying, ''You have done this.'' The Black Press is partially responsible for that victory. ''The Black vote has taken the high road,'' said Ray Boone, editor/publisher of the Richmond Free Press in Richmond, Va., the former Capital of the Confederacy, which elected a Democratic president for the first time in more than 40 years. ''This marks a difinitive departure from our shameful past. This only gives hope and pride to the fact that Virginia contributed to the advancement of the country and gives hope to the entire world,'' Boone said. Obama graciously congratulated Republican Sen. John McCain for his hard fight in a tone that caused the audience to cheer. In contrast, McCain had to shush an audience who booed when he congratulated Obama in his concession speech. Still McCain graciously congratulated Obama and even paid homage to the Black community for its victory. “He managed to do so much by inspiring the hopes of some millions of Americans who once wrongly believed they had little at stake or little influence in the election of an American president,'' McCain said. ''It is something I deeply admire and commend him for achieving. This is an historic election. I recognize the special significance it has for African-americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight.'' Civil rights leaders reveled in the victory. Tears streamed the face of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, a civil rights icon, watching Obama speak in Chicago. ''This victory is the fruit of the struggle of many people who've gone by,'' said National Urban League President and CEO Marc Morial. ''People can now quit asking when will the day come when a Black man can be elected president of the United States.'' The Obama win comes after a hard-fought race over the past two years as he struggled to prove himself; even in the Black community, which initially did not believe he could win due to White racism. The son of a Kenyan man and a White woman from Kansas, Obama initially received a slow reception from Black voters. In January and February of 2007, an ABC News-Washington Post poll showed his Democratic Primary opponent Hillary Clinton at 40 points higher than Obama among AfricanAmericans who had been asked their preference for the Democratic Primary. An earlier poll in December of 2006 showed that 65 percent of Whites to only 54 percent of Blacks thought America would be willing to elect a Black president. “A lot of Black people, especially in the South, really didn’t think that a Black candidate could be elected president. And they weren’t looking for a symbolic candidate. They were looking for somebody who was going to win,” says David Bositis, a specialist on Black electoral politics at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies. Adding to the Black support for Clinton was the popularity of her husband, former President Clinton. But then there was a shift. “Once he won Iowa, there was some significant movement,” Bositis points out. The Jan. 3 Iowa primary caused the world to gasp that a Black man in America could win a presidential primary in a state that was more than 95 percent White. Immediately, the pace of Obama’s support among Blacks escalated. An ABC News poll showed him at 60-40 percent Black support over Clinton by mid January. Winning broad-based support, he consistently maintained more pledged delegates than Clinton, a key factor in winning the nomination.

Who Asked Me?

After Historic Victory, Obama Will Face Limitations By. George E Curry NNPA Columnist

Now that Barack Obama has defeated John McCain, Joe the Plumber and a barrage of negative television commercials, he will now strive to balance the high expectations of African Americans and other progressives with the reality of an anemic economy and supersized budget deficits. Like McCain, the president-elect promised that shrinking finances will not deter him from keeping his central campaign promises. In Obama’s case, it means extending tax cuts to the middle class, providing additional assistance to college students and revamping health care. However, after he is inaugurated, Obama and a Democratically-controlled House and Senate will inherit a batch of red ink, though huge, that does not fully capture the scope of the problem. Consider this: When George W. Bush assumed office in 2001, Bill Clinton left him with a budget surplus of $128 billion. On the other hand, Bush has posted a budget deficit every year in office; by 2009, it is expected to reach $482 billion. And that does not include another $80 billion spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. After a $700 billion financial services bailout – or what should be called “No Bank Left Behind” – Obama has already stated that a second bailout will be needed, this one for middle class families and those with troubled home mortgages. This will come while the jury is still out on whether the initial $700 billion will be effective. An article in the New York Times indicates that banks intend to use the bailout money to acquire other banks, not to make new loans as had been promised by Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson, Jr. Times reporter Joe Nocera said he listened to an Oct. 17 conference call between a JPMorganChase executive and company employees. This was four days after the company agreed to take $25 billion in federal funding as part of the bailout program. “What we do think it will help us do is perhaps be a little more active on the acquisition side ...” the executive said. As for making more loans to consumers, the official said: “We would think that loan volume will continue to go down as we continue to tighten credit to fully reflect the high cost of pricing on the loan side.” After listening to the conversation, Nocera wrote: “It is starting to appear as if one of the Treasury’s key rationales for the recapitalization program – namely, that it will cause banks to start lending again – is a fig leaf, the Treasury’s version of the weapons of mass destruction.” Had Obama not been elected, it would have been a major setback for the Supreme Court. However, his victory is not expected to change the 5-4 edge that centrists are barely hold. At least, it is unlikely to change during Obama’s first term. The two oldest Supreme Court justices – John Paul Stevens, 88, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 75 --- are liberals. If they are the first to leave the court, Obama will get a chance to replace a liberal with a liberal, which won’t change the court’s present balance. If McCain had been elected, he could have tilted the court to the far right by replacing a liberal with yet another conservative, thus impacting the court for several generations. Perhaps even more important than the Supreme Court, which hears only 0.1 percent of the cases appealed each year, Obama should be able to restore some balance in the lower courts. According to the National Journal, 54 percent of District Court judges were appointed by Republican presidents and 56 percent of all appeals judges. It would probably take a second Obama term to shift the balance in both the Supreme Court and the district and appeals levels. Obama will be able to make an immediate imprint on how the country treats the least among us and deliver what George W. Bush only promised – compassion. Sure, there will be pressure on Obama to shift more toward the center-right and he has done this on some issues, such as the death penalty. However, he has a straight-A voting record on issues important to African-Americans, according to the NAACP Legislative Report Card. And throughout his campaign, he did not back away from supporting affirmative action or equal justice. Unlike the past eight years, we’ll be able to go to bed at night knowing that the president of the United States is not hostile to our concerns. This is the change that not only have we been waiting for, the world has been waiting with us. It has been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait.

SENATOR LINDSEY GRAHAM: SERVANT OF THE PEOPLE By Oliver Washington Jr., and Steven Larkin South Carolina United States Senator Lindsey Graham knows the difficulty in receiving the vote of black South Carolinians. "I have to work hard to receive the confidence, support and vote of Black citizens of South Carolina.", Senator Graham stated in a recent telephone interview. I view myself as senator for "all" of the citizens of this great state and have demonstrated my commitment to all of South Carolina. Senator Graham sees the greatest needs of South Carolina being broken down into four distinct areas. 1. Education, 2. Health Care, 3. Jobs 4. Improving the State's Infrastructure. "I have worked tirelessly with Representative Clyburn on various initiatives directly supporting needs of the black community. working together "everyone will rise together as a state". Working in concert with Representative Clyburn we have been able to provide funding for roads, sewage, and water projects in the rural counties of South Carolina. It is imperative that we all work to improve not only education for educational opportunities of our citizens, but work to keep our graduates in the workforce in South Carolina. I am an ardent supported of all of South Carolina's Historical Black Colleges and Universities. "In fact, explained the senator, I have been commencement speaker, spoken, or met on every HBC in South Carolina." Some of the initiatives I have supported have been waiving student loans for black students that agree to teach in rural and poor communities or Title One Schools. Citizens getting good paying jobs in South Carolina are a key to our state's economic upward mobility in the state. The support of Charter Schools for parents to have a way of escaping failing schools is one of my main educational objectives I strongly support community heath centers that will provide good heath care for all citizens, especially in poor communities. Providing, Pell Grants, and other financial aid for nurses and other college students will increase the educational level of our state. "I support job fairs throughout the state to help pair college graduates and other citizens looking for jobs to help raise the economic base of the community. "I am not opposed to crossing party lines to help the citizens of South Carolina". I just don't ask for the black citizen's support I work hard to earn their support. This is why I feel so proud to have received the endorsement of a great preacher and community leader in Rev. Charles Jackson, pastor of Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia. Pastor Jackson said "A great friend and servant of our state is Lindsey Graham In the six years he has served in the Senate, he has distinguished himself as one of our most respected and influential Senators. I am encouraged by Senator Graham's sincere efforts to reach out to the African American community. He is very thoughtful, engaging and responsive to concerns we may have."

THE LONG ROAD HOME Tonight as I collect my thoughts on the past two years of the high and lows of the Presidential race, I can hardly contain my emotions. Tuesday is going to be an extremely long day for me while I await the results of who will be the next President of these United States of America. I am hopeful, as many of you are, that Barack Obama will emerge as the 44th President. Actually, the next president will be the 43rd President since Grover Cleveland served two terms that were not consecutive terms. If Barack wins, he will go down in history as the 43rd or 44th President. He would be the first African American President and that is more than I had ever expected during my lifetime. As unreal as the possibility may seem, it would be the end of the long road home. It would be the highly improbable conclusion of a race that started on little more than a wing and a prayer. A win for Obama would vindicate America. A victory would not excuse her decades of discriminatory and unwarranted behavior over the years but would indicate her willingness to accept her people for who they really are. It would send a message to the world that she is ready to recognize her people who are as diverse as crayons and as intelligent as Einstein. Obama’s victory will be bittersweet since his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, passed on the eve of the most talked about and controversial election in history. She could not wait another day to see her grandson become the next Commander-in-Chief. She had an appointment with her Commander-in-Chief. As one of my nieces said tonight as we reflected upon the death of Obama’s grandmother, she said she went on ahead to seal the Presidency for him with the Maker. However, like most grandmothers, they play an integral in helping to raise their grandchildren. They teach them to leave the world a better place. The victory would be bittersweet for me since my mother did not live to see this day. My mother was quiet but quite a fighter. She fought fiercely against discrimination. She wanted so much for her children. And I want so much for mine. All mothers whether effective or not want what is best for their children. I want my children to grow up in a world that will recognize them for who they are and not discriminate against them for who they have made them out to be. That is why we make the sacrifices that we do. That is why we rake and scrape to send our children to school. That’s why we constantly encourage them to be all that they can be. We work hard to prepare our children for opportunities so when they become available they will be ready to step up to the plate. The journey for equality is far from over but we are bound to get there. I have never seen the excitement in other elections as I have seen in this one. I can remember the excitement I felt voting for the first time for President Kennedy. It was my first time voting since I had become of age. Then I felt the same excitement when I voted for President Clinton but nothing compares to the excitement I feel in this election. It is so surreal. I can’t wait to wake up on Wednesday morning to pinch myself. I am confident that we will see a new America coming out of this election. If for some reason Obama is not victorious, I still have high hopes that we are moving this country in the right direction. On our long road home, we have encountered many difficult days. There were days when we thought the sun would never shine again but we were crazy enough to believe in an unseen God. I wish to publicly acknowledge God in how history has unfolded. Our struggles have not gone unnoticed. And on our long road home, thousands of our people died. And while so many did not live to see this day, we are here to carry the torch for them. After all, Obama had the “Audacity of Hope” to believe that he could and I have the “Audacity of Hope” to believe that the American people will send Obama to the White House.

Celebrations, Good Behavior on Nov. 5 Good Morning My People - After watching the final debate the other night, it dawned on me that Obama could actually win this thing. If that happens, there will be a lot of people (some of our coworkers included) who will be afraid that an Obama presidency will usher in the end of days. They'll be watching us on November 5th (the day after the election) for signs of the end times. To keep the peace and keep a lot of folks from getting nervous, I think we should develop a list of acceptable celebrations and behaviors we should probably avoid - at least for the first few days: 1. No crying, hugging or shouting "Thank you Lord" - at least not in public 2 No high-fives - at least not unless the area is clear and there are no witnesses 3 No laughing at the McCain/Palin supporters 4 No calling in sick on November 5th. They'll get nervous if too many of us don't show up. 5 We're allowed to give each other knowing winks or nods in passing. Just try to keep from grinning too hard. 6. No singing loudly, We've come this Far By Faith (it will be acceptable to hum softly) 7. No bringing of barbeque ribs or fried chicken for lunch in the company lunchroom for at least a week (no chittlings at all) (this may make us seem to ethnic) 8. No leaving kool-aid packages at the water fountain (this might be a sign that poor folks might be getting a break through) 9. No Cupid Shuffle during breaks (this could indicate a little too much excitement) 10. Please no Moving on Up music (we are going to try to remain humble) 11. No doing the George Jefferson dance (unless you're in your office with the door closed) 12. Please try not to yell----BOOOO YAH! 13. Just in case you're wondering, Doing the Running Man, cabbage patch, or a backhand spring on the highway is 100% okay. If I've missed anything feel free to add to the list. I just want to make sure we're all on the same page when Obama brings this thing home on November 5th. Ericka J. Evans, M. Ed.

As I See It

Hakim Abdul-Ali

A Love Affair With God (Alone) Ideas sometimes appear out of nowhere when I write as I do. Just recently I was involved in a conversation with a brother named Hamid from New Orleans when I said during our conversation that I was experiencing another natural eye opening vibration about wonders of God (Alone) while I was driving my automobile. Brother Hamid, who’s a very spiritually insightful young man, said to me that sounded like a theme to write an article about. Believe it or not, just prior to his suggesting that idea to me, I’d thought about it myself only moments before he had uttered his timely suggestion. That’s the way life has been for me recently as I think about the many unfolding thoughts in my head about the signs, powers and wisdom of and from the Most High Alone as He poignantly displays His divine awesomeness in so many different ways. I’m literally held spellbound by the things that I continually see and understand from God Alone’s majestic powers of creation. From the colors of the changing leaves of New England to the frozen tundra of the North Pole’s distant horizon, I feel “A Love Affair With God (Alone)” and the things of His creation. I hope that doesn’t sound too serendipitous, but that’s the way it is in mind’s eye when I think of the beauty of God Alone’s diverse creations. From nature to “hue-mans,” “My Love Affair With God (Alone)” is something that I hold very personal, because in all my moments of existence I always challenge myself to see and appreciate the many wondrous signs from God Alone, no matter how they may appear before my present mind-set and ever changing temporal sates of awareness. You could say that I’ve got it real bad with this “love” thing about God Alone issues, and you’d be right on the money if you did. I’m not ashamed to admit that because there were periods in my past mental states and worlds of existences when I didn’t feel that way. If you’re reading this and you’re saying to yourself how could anyone in his or her proper mind-set not be in love with the Creator (Alone) of life and death. Well, I’ve been known to tell you and anyone else who has read my views just how I opinionatedly feel, and at this moment I’ll continue with that posture. Yes, believe it or not, I was once in love and lost with things in this life that were abstract in purpose and without substance in meaning. I was as spiritually hollow as hollow can get, and there was no “love” (with no sincere devotion) for my, your and everyone else’s Creator (Alone). I was truly what you could label a person “deaf, dumb and blind.” It was a painful and trying period of my life as I escalated from one moment to the other acting as though the universe revolving around me and those individuals and events who and what were in my immediate worlds of existences had no significances. Honestly, I was bewildered. There was no real “love” for the Creator Alone of life in my blinded one-sided concept of how things worked in creation. I was deaf and dumb to “Who” really controlled “this” show called the universe of existence. I did all of this in my fascination for the life of this world and savoring the life of momentary fun and games. Does that seem or sound familiar of someone who you may know or may have known as you personally reflect on the importance of life itself and “Who” is charge of this and every moment in existence? While you ponder that reality let me tell you that every time you breathe you have a “love” affair with God Alone. He is the Creator Alone of everything in life, and without Him, how would you or I make it to the next moment in existence? That’s the scenario I posed to Brother Hamid, at home way down in Louisiana, just as I was posing that reality to myself as I was riding in my car on the way to Richmond, Virginia. We both instinctively felt that there’s no greater “love” ( and never will and ever could be) than that of the “love” of God Alone. I’m drawn to admit that I’m totally focused when it comes to “loving” only the concept of monotheism because “Who” else could I keep my total allegiance of spiritual devotion to? This is no time to play silly mind games now as you prepare to give your answer of honest testimony to “Who” is charge of every waking moment. And while on that point, please remember that, hopefully, your bearing witness to the Creator Alone in the private openness of this solitary moment in time is another heralded moment that says that you have “A Real Love Affair With God Alone.” I know that I did and do, and I can surely tell that Brother Hamid did and does. Our “Love Affair(s) With God Alone” has nothing to do with anything but the sole, undeniable pristine oneness of the Creator Alone in and under every situation. That’s why we and other like minded folks throughout the universe “testify” to God Alone’s unique oneness, because there’s no one like Him in creation. He Alone created “all” of creation, including all things that we know about life and death as we understand it to be, and “all” that we do not know or even possibly comprehend. I could only tell you that because of this simple reality that I know intellectually could never, ever be challenged, I must tell you that I’m having at this precise moment, “Another Love Affair With God Alone.” I’m making that bold and assertive statement now after having arrived in Richmond by God Alone’s permission. You see, another sign is that I could never, ever have made it to Richmond from my original place of departure, Charleston, South Carolina, except by God Alone’s guidance, will and mercy. There’s nothing that happens or occurs in life that God Alone doesn’t know about or is in control of. I know this to be a fact, and so does Brother Hamid in New Orleans, Louisiana, who mentioned to me that I should possibly use this devotional point of awareness as a theme for another “As I See I” article. As you have now read and are reading, I’m doing this now, by God Alone’s permission, and I’ll always state to you and anyone who’s listening, or may appear to be interested, that I’m having “A Love Affair With God Alone.” I worship no “colored” man or woman or nation. I worship and praise only God Alone, Who is the Creator of every man and every woman of every known (and unknown) ethnicity in all of existences. I say that respectfully, knowing fully well that every prophet of God Alone (May God Alone be pleased with them) never worshipped themselves, nor did they tell anyone following them and their messages of monotheism to do so. They did it with sternness and reverence, because they knew and constantly had “A (Constant) Love Affair With God Alone.” Those Messengers of God Alone (PBUT) left legacies of telling this and past generations of created “hue-mans” that God Alone is the “only” sole force Who Alone deserves to be praised and worshipped. God Alone has allowed me, Brother Hamid and all “true” monotheistic followers of the Messengers of God Alone (PBUT) to bear witness that “There’s No God but God Alone Who is Worthy of Worship,” and that there’s nothing wrong with having “A Love Affair With God Alone.” Thanks Brother Hamid for the idea to write what I’ve just written. For today and always, that’s, “As I See It.”

Black and Civil Rights Leaders’ Wish List of Issues for New President By. Hazel Trice Edney NNPA Editor-in-Chief W A S H I N G T O N (NNPA) – Despite the clear mandate that America’s new president prioritize the reparation of the economy, jobs and taxrelated issues, many other issues deserve top billing, say Black political observers. Judicial appointments, voting rights, international relations and education are among other issues on a wish list for AfricanAmericans and civil rights advocates. ''The retreat on diversity in [federal courts] in recent years has made the issue more important for the next President,” says Leslie Proll, director, Washington Office, NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund. There will be much work to do just restoring some diversity to many courts, let alone improving upon it.'' Supreme Court justices get lifetime presidential appointments, but due to possible retirements, as many as three justices may be appointed by the new president and hundreds to lower federal courts, to make decisions on racerelated issues from affirmative action to civil rights. Some not only see racial and cultural sensitivity, but racial diversity as a key to fairness in judicial appointments. The Bush administration has appointed few Black judges, only 25 out of his 324 judicial appointments. The lack of appointments of African-Americans, coupled with retirements of African-Americans from federal benches, has caused a decline in Black judgeships across the nation, despite past gains. The fight for civil rights is still not over despite the historic nature of this year’s presidential election. Harvard Law School Professor Charles Ogletree underscores civil rights – even the right to free and fair elections - as a key issue that must be dealt with early in the new administration. “The critical civil right for 2008 is one person one vote, so many people - and particularly Black people find themselves in the same position of their parents and grand parents whose efforts to vote were frustrated,” Ogletree says. “Dr. King and Justice Thurgood Marshall fought valiantly for the right to vote. If the experiences of people of color in Florida in 2000 and Ohio in 2004 tell us anything, it is that the precious right to vote is

Charles Ogletree

as much an issue in the 21st century as it was in the 20th century.” Prospective voters found that to be true in this year’s election as tricks were played and misleading information was distributed; including a flyer in Virginia that read, “Get out the vote on Nov. 5,” – the day after the election. As much as domestic issues are on the minds of Black leaders, the new presidential administration must also focus on America’s relationships in the world in the midst of war and hostility, says Gloria

Wade Henderson Sawyer, a political science lecturer at Chicago State University, who also specializes in international affairs. “One of the key, if not pivotal issues that will face the newly elected U.S. President, is to successfully redefine American foreign policy strategies amidst impending international crisis, military engagements, mounting cost of sustaining U.S. troops in Iraqi, all while repairing eroded international diplomatic relations and strategic global coalitions in the community of nations,” says Sawyer. “The newly elected President must effectively do the aforementioned while countering weapons of mass destruction proliferation - especially amidst the hostilities, peculiarities and sensitivities of the Gulf Region, Pakistan and

North Korea. Further he must develop a viable exit strategy for removing U.S. troops from Iraqi soil.” Sawyer also points out that the confidence of Americans in its own government must be restored as terror-fighting mechanisms such as the USA Patriot Act - which allows some telephone and email surveillance without search warrant or court-order seems to have gone too far.

Dr. Julia Hare Specifically, she points out the “‘unauthorized’ random surveillance of U. S. citizens under the Bush administration’,” that civil and human rights experts have viewed as breaches in American rights to privacy. But it’s the every day socalled “bread and butter” issues, such as culturally inclusive educational curricula that’s on the mind of Dr. E. Faye Williams. African-American educational experts, including Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, author of “Countering the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys,” have contended that the more Black children learn about their noble African heritage, the better their chances of selfesteem that will cause improved educational performance. But, often, the contributions of African-Americans are not fully included in classroom teaching of American history. “After dealing with the economy, it is imperative that cultural education gets a lot of serious attention in our schools – and many of us have done it without hate and anger,” says Williams, chair of the National Congress of Black Women, Inc. “We must teach the true history of our nation – the good, the bad and the ugly, and resist the urge to label anybody unpatriotic for pointing out and wanting to change what is not good.” Educational issues were at

the top of the list for several African-American rights advocates, interviewed by the NNPA News Service. Dr. Julia Hare, co-founder of the San Francisco-based Black Think Tank with her husband, Nathan Hare, who have co-authored a book, “The Miseducation of the Black Child,” says the new president would do well to advocate the incorporation of the entire community educational programs by creating “success activities” for children instead of “failure activities” that so often distract and engage them. “So rather than a new round of tests standardized on middle class White kids and testing Black inner city children on things they haven’t been taught, we would be taking back control over our children’s minds and their socialization,” says Hare. “Right now we have lost control of our children’s minds. We’ve lost the authority to discipline, at home and at school, and we are no longer able to give our children a clear core to their personalities or to prepare them for what we want them to be or become.” The quality of education across the board must be addressed, says Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. However, citizens must realize that it’s the community – not just the president – who must do most of the work. “Unfortunately, the president’s role in education is limited as it is not a civil right provided by the Constitution,” Henderson says. “Our job in the civil rights community is to make the country aware that quality education is a right for all, and that if states won’t act; the federal government should step in…For the Black community, there is no more important issue on their minds.” Henderson concludes, “Access to a high quality public education is still a fundamental right upon which all others depend; and yet 50 years later, the promise of Brown remains unfulfilled. Inequality is rampant by almost every measure. We as a nation spend more money on our public education system than any other country in the world, yet we are still miles behind in educating our children. Spending that money more effectively and reauthorizing “No Child Left Behind” to make it work for students, par

“Such a Time as This” By. James Clingman NNPA Columnist Blackonomics No, this is not about Barack Obama. There will be plenty of time to write about his ascension to the highest office in the land after November 4, 2008. This is about the economy and how it will affect us individually and collectively. Since the tidal wave of Wall Street bailouts and bank failures began, we have seen our personal economic situations decline. We have seen what little clout we even thought we had with banks slip further into the abyss of higher interest rates and ATM fees, outlandish credit card fees and assessments, tighter lending policies, and rip-off charges for insufficient fund checks that multiply on a daily basis. What shall we do? I have said it many times before, via this column and in my speeches, so I guess one more time won’t hurt. If ever there was a need for a Collective Banking Group (CBG) Chapter in your city, it is right now. The leverage that comes with collective and cooperative work cannot be overstated, and what better time to have leverage with the banks than in these dire economic circum-

stances. We will surely see more of the same as the pain of the recession, and maybe even a depression, moves up the ladder toward the affluent. We will see more usury interest rates, more restrictions on lending, especially for homes and businesses, and more backroom deals being cut between greedy corporate bigwigs and corrupt politicians. With all of that going on, Black people need all the leverage, influence, and power we can get, because you know we are always the ones who get the worst from hard times. The CBG is not a panacea that will cure all of our ills, but it certainly will change the way banks do business with us, and it will change how we view and deal with banks. I have seen it with my own eyes in the Maryland/DC area, as well as in other cities where CBG Chapters exist. It only makes sense to be in a position to “deal” with banks on a serious level and obtain maximum reciprocity for the dollars they hold for us, especially among our Black churches. Billions of dollars every year going from our pews to their vaults, and in many cases across this country all we do is complain about how we are mistreated by the banks. It makes no sense at all to keep up the constant refrain of mis-

ery and woe, whining about what someone does to us, and waiting for them to change without any incentive to do so. And for those of you who are waiting for Barack Obama to solve this problem, I have a newsflash for you. It ain’t gonna happen. The CBG works on a local level, where you and I live; just like politics is local, so is economics. We had better get with the program and start responding appropriately to unfair treatment and abuse by ANY entity in our communities. At such a time as this, when the economy is in a tailspin; at such a time as this, when the “big boys” are wringing their hands and pondering a flying leap from the 44th floor; at such a time as this, when economic fear grips those whose greatest fear, prior to now, was a double bogey; and at such a time as this, when there is so much economic uncertainty yet the ever-present certainty that Black people will continue at the bottom of the economic spectrum; at such a time as this, we must act! The tools we need are at our fingertips; all we need to do is use them. Our collective economic resources cannot be denied, but we cannot continue to allow those resources, the lifeblood of our households, our neighborhoods, and our churches, to leave and

never return. At such a time as this, we have the opportunity to establish and solidify our presence, our resolve, and our unity around a sound economic principle - and the Maat principle of Reciprocity. The Biblical passage upon which this article is based comes from the Book of Esther, a young lady who had to make a tough decision regarding the future of her people. After seeing what happened to Queen Vashti when she defied the king, and after hearing the words of her cousin, Mordecai, “Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther realized that even at the risk of losing her own life, she must act. Why? Because it was the right thing to do and the right time to do it. We are also faced with a decision, maybe not a physical life and death decision, but certainly an economic decision that will impact our daily lives. What will we do in our moment of “such a time as this?” Will we step forward as Esther did, as David did, as Joshua and Caleb did? Or will we cower in a dark corner of anonymity, afraid to speak out and afraid to organize a chapter of the CBG? We must not be timid; we must let the “kings” know that they will treat us fairly or they will not be treated to our dollars.

Doubling Rate For Diabetes Cases, Obesity Is To Blame only the 33 states for which the CDC had complete data for both time periods.

(BlackDoctor.org) -Diabetes cases have nearly doubled in the past ten years since the nation's obesity percentage have went up. According to the first state by state review of new diagnoses, the South has the highest rate of Diabetes. West Virginia was the worst where 13 out of 1,00 were diagnosed between 2005-07. Minnesota has the lowest diagnoses of 5 in 1,000. Nationally, the rate of new cases climbed from about 5 per 1,000 in the mid-1990s to 9 per 1,000 in the middle of this decade. Roughly 90 percent of cases are Type 2 diabetes, the form linked to obesity. Diabetes is a major health problem for African Americans for whom the prevalence rate is 1.6 times the rate for whites. The findings dovetail with trends seen in obesity and lack of exercise — two health measures where Southern states also rank at the bottom. Obesity rate are high among African Americans, particularly African American women. "It isn't surprising the problem is heaviest in the South — no pun intended," agreed Matt Petersen, who oversees data and statistics for the American Diabetes Association.

The researchers had data for 40 states for the years 2005-07.

The study, led by Karen Kirtland of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides an up-todate picture of where the disease is exploding. The information should be a big help as the government and health insurance companies decide where to focus prevention campaigns, Petersen said. Diabetes was the nation's seventh-leading cause of death in 2006, according to the CDC. More than 23 million Americans have diabetes, and the number is rapidly growing. About 1.6 million new cases were diagnosed among adults last year. Type 2 diabetics do not produce or use insulin, a hormone needed to convert sugar into energy. The illness can cause sugar to build up in the body, leading to complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and poor circulation that leads to foot amputations. The study involved a randomdigit-dialed survey of more than 260,000 adults. Participants were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor that they have diabetes, and when the diagnosis was made. The comparisons between 1995-97 and 2005-07 covered

West Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Texas and Tennessee had the highest rates, all at 11 cases per 1,000 or higher. Puerto Rico was about as high as West Virginia. Minnesota, Hawaii and Wyoming had the lowest rates. It is not entirely clear why some states were worse than others. Older people, blacks and Hispanics tend to have higher rates of Type 2 diabetes, and the South has large concentrations of all three groups. However, West Virginia is overwhelmingly white. The report asked about diagnosed diabetes only. Because an estimated one in four diabetics have not been diagnosed, the findings probably underestimate the problem, said Angela Liese, a diabetes researcher at the University of South Carolina. The underestimates may be particularly bad in the rural South and other areas where patients have trouble getting health care, she noted. By Candace Hall, BDO Staff Writer

Falls Are Leading Cause of Injury to Seniors (HealthDay News) -- Former first lady Nancy Reagan and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's grandmother have suffered recent pelvic and hip injuries. And on Friday, author Studs Terkel died, following reports that a fall two weeks ago had hastened his decline. Such news, experts say, should be a reminder to all about the need to help the elderly protect themselves against their increased risk of falls and bone injuries. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, one in every three Americans older than 65 experiences a fall, making it the leading cause of injuries to seniors. To help prevent falls and bone fractures, the academy recommends that seniors: •Have an annual physical and eye examination. Make sure any cardiac and blood pressure problems are fully evaluated. •Consume a diet with adequate dietary calcium and vitamin D for good bone health. Do not smoke, and avoid excessive use of alcohol. •Participate in an exercise program to maintain agility, strength, balance, and coordination. •Maintain a clutter-free home with clear walking paths through rooms. Eliminate tripping hazards and install grab bars, handrails and other safety devices in appropriate areas, such as bathrooms and bedrooms. • W e a r properly fitting shoes with nonskid soles. Never walk about with only socks or stockings on your feet. •Have adequate lighting in the home. Use nightlights between bedrooms and bathrooms. Make sure light switches are easily accessible by doorways.

Understanding Low Blood Pressure WebMD Understanding Low Blood Pressure - The Basics What Is Low Blood Pressure? Hypotension is the medical term for low blood pressure (less than 90/60). A blood pressure reading appears as two numbers. The first and higher of the two is a measure of systolic pressure, or the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats and fills them with blood. The second number measures diastolic pressure, or the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats. Normal blood pressure is usually in the range of 120/80 (systolic/diastolic). In healthy people, especially athletes, low blood pressure is a sign of good cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) health. But low blood pressure can be a sign of an underlying problem -- especially in the elderly -where it may cause inadequate blood flow to the heart, brain, and other vital organs. Chronic low blood pressure is almost never serious. But health problems occur when blood pressure drops suddenly, and the brain is deprived of

an adequate blood supply. This can lead to dizziness or lightheadedness. It most commonly occurs in someone who's rising from a prone or sitting position to standing. This kind of low blood pressure is known as postural hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, or neurally mediated orthostatic hypotension. Postural hypotension is considered a failure of the autonomic nervous system -- the part of the nervous system that controls involuntary vital actions, such as the heartbeat -- to react appropriately to sudden changes. Normally, when you stand up, some blood pools in your lower extremities. Uncorrected, this would cause your blood pressure to fall. But your body normally compensates by sending messages to your heart to beat faster and to your blood vessels to constrict. This offsets the drop in blood pressure. If this does not happen, or happens too slowly, postural hypotension results. The risk of both low and high blood pressure normally increases with age, due in part to normal changes during aging. In addition, blood flow in the brain declines with age, often as a result of plaque buildup in blood vessels. An estimated 10% to 20% of elderly people have postural hypotension.

3 Reasons Not To Get A Flu Shot By Makeisha Lee, Health and Nutritional Advisor It’s that time of the year again where conceivably you could miss several days of work, countless hours of fun with family and friends, or worst spend too many hours sick in bed! It is the dreadful “Flu Season"! Most Americans are being urged to get a flu shot to protect against getting sick. However, before you rush to hand over your hard-earned dollars to get punctured, here are 3 reasons why you should rethink your position: 1. The majority of flu shots contain 25 micrograms of mercury, an amount considered unsafe for anyone weighing less than 550 pounds! The groups that are most sensitive

- Exercise - Get adequate sleep - Address any and all emotional stress - Wash your hands regularly (but not excessively) Lastly, two very useful supplements if you should contract the flu virus would be Olive Leaf extract, as it has been proven to be a potent broadspectrum anti-viral agent, and Vitamin D. So you don’t have to be worried “sick” about getting the flu – just be proactive instead of reactive!

to the neurological damage associated with mercury are infants, children, and the elderly. 2. No study to-date has conclusively proven that flu shots prevent flu-related deaths among the elderly. Yet, this is one of the key groups to which they’re promoted to. 3. It’s no longer a secret that even If you get a flu shot, you still CAN get the flu (or flulike symptoms) at any age. This is because it only protects against certain strains, and who knows exactly which flu viruses will be in your particular area. Okay, so if you don’t get the flu shot, what will prevent you from being the next victim of this hideous yearly visitor? - Eat garlic regularly - Consume high-quality krill oil daily

........HEALTH FOR YOU French Fries That Won’t Clog Your Arteries (BlackDoctor.org) -- Have you been avoiding them? How can you? Either you are extremely strong willed or you found a route to and from work that avoids the “Golden Arches.” Eating healthy is all about changing how you eat the things you love, not depriving yourself. If you have been living without fries, I’ve got great news for you. Here's a lowfat recipe that will allow you to enjoy those little crunchy sticks of potatoes again: Deceptively Skinny French Fries • Olive oil spray • 2 pounds baking potatoes • 1/4 tsp salt, plus more to taste, if desired • 1 1/2 tsp extra virgin olive oil Directions:

Gerald W. Deas, M.D.

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Lightly mist a medium nonstick baking sheet with olive oil spray. 3. Use a crinkle cutter to peel potatoes by cutting close to the edges on each side and end. Discard peels. Then use crinkle cutter to cut peeled potatoes into 1/3-inch thick sticks (they will vary in length). 4. Toss potato sticks with salt and extra virgin olive oil. Spread them in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. 5. Bake for 15 minutes, then flip and bake for another 16 to 18 minutes or until just crisp on the outside and tender inside. Season with additional salt to taste and serve. Makes 4 portions. Per portion: 105 calories, 2 g fat (trace saturated fat), 20 g carbs, 2 g

protein, 2 g fiber, 152 mg sodium, 0 mg cholesterol **If you ate this instead of traditional French fries, you'd save 201 calories, 24 g fat, and 5 g saturated fat. By John Williams, BDO Staff Writer

HIV...it ‘bees’ that way sometime! By Gerald W. Deas, M.D. Contributing Writer I think that when a movie is great, it is capable of making you laugh and cry, as the story unfolds. This is what happened to me while viewing the recent film “The Secret Life of Bees,” adapted from the novel by Sue Monk Kidd. I suggest that if you go to see this film, carry a box of tissues with you. I can only tell you that Queen Latifah personifies the life of a Queen Bee, who makes plenty of money from the sale her honey while being supported by two bee-working sisters, who care for the nest that is a beautiful pink castle. Another drama being played out on the stage of this planet that seems far from a final curtain call is AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). This drama was recognized in 1981 when certain rare infectious diseases began to appear among young, homosexual men. It was Drs. Gallo, Montagnier and Levy who discovered the HIV virus in 1984. Then Dr. Gerald Friedland of Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx in 1986 recognized that this viral disease did not discriminate in causing AIDS, but every person was at risk who came in contact with an infected person. The HIV virus at that time took a bow on the stage of this planet and until this day, no one can explain how or where it all started. In other words, the play is not yet over, although many drugs are now available to sustain lives of infected persons, but not to cure them. Educating the public is the only defense we have to combat this disease. Several years ago, I thought very hard about getting out a message to the public regarding this devastating medical condition. When I went to the dictionary, the only word that started with the letters, HIV was HIVE. I therefore decided to create a fan in the shape of a bee with a message on the front that stated the following, “In a Bee Hive, The Queen Bee Abides. If the Queen Bee Dies, The Hive Will Not Survive.” (The “E” on the word “HIVE” was accented in red). The reverse side of the fan read, “To Bee or Not to Bee,”…The Buzz on “Beeing.” Are you saved…from HIV, the virus that causes AIDS? If you

are, you’ve accepted personal changes in your behavior. As a “Beeliever” that AIDS is a preventable illness that can weaken the body’s ability to fight disease, Dr. Gerald Deas says, “Be a Bee-liever” and reminds you and members of your hive to be aware of having unprotected sex, abusing drugs and sharing needles. The fan was distributed throughout churches. Finally, in order to decrease the incidence of this disease I would strongly suggest that you

get tested. AIDS is no longer a young person’s disease, but is showing up among elderly also. Impotence-relief drugs have definitely come into the picture also, as they have increased sexual activity among the elderly. It “Bees” that way sometime! AIDS is not a secret.

READ TO YOUR CHILDREN

I have many female patients come to my office complaining about pain in their muscles. They have been to several other doctors and have received medication for the pain without results. The general over-the-counter medications, including prescribed prescription medicines (narcotics), were not successful in relieving the distressing pain which often caused depression and sleep disturbances. The patient also revealed that the muscles experienced point tenderness and usually occurred around the shoulders, lower back and knees. Usually, blood tests, x-rays and MRI’s were normal. Of course, the patient was very upset that symptoms

had not been relieved. In other words, the pain could not be explained by the physician. I am sure that you recall the saying, “sticks and stones may break your bones, but names will never hurt you.” Well, this condition named fibromyalgia, is associated with unrelenting, difficult to diagnose pain. Recently, research concerning this condition has been further investigated by Dr. Veraindar Goli, M.D.,MBA,FAPA, who is Director of Pain Evaluation and Treatment Services at Duke University Medical School. This finding has been essentially, a break through in helping the control of pain in fibromyalgia. As research continues, it is possible that new drugs for pain may be discovered

which may relieve much distress and discomfort. It is further understood, that medication is not only the answer for pain control, it has been certainly shown that exercise, stress reduction, meditation, along with good nutrition can lessen the pain from this condition. Recently, the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has approved a drug that has been shown to be effective in relieving fibromyalgia pain. You may consult your physician regarding the drug, Lyrica (pregnable), As research continues, I am sure that other drugs of this nature will be developed and finally end the discomfort of a disease that caused “pain, you can’t explain.”

Obama's Speech:

'It's Been a Long Time Coming' There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage or pay their doctors' bills or save enough for their child's college education.

A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Senator McCain.

By: Associated Press --OBAMA: Hello, Chicago. If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference. It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states. We are, and always will be, the United States of America. It's the answer that led those who've been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

Senator McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he's fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him; I congratulate Governor Palin for all that they've achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation's promise in the months ahead. I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton ... and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the vice president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden. And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years ... the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next first lady ... Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia ... I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us ...to the new White House. And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother's watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight. I know that my debt to them is beyond measure. To my sister Maya, my sister Alma, all my other

brothers and sisters, thank you so much for all the support that you've given me. I am grateful to them. And to my campaign manager, David Plouffe ... the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best the best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America. To my chief strategist David Axelrod ... who's been a partner with me every step of the way. To the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics ... you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done. But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to. It belongs to you. It belongs to you. I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the

cause. It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy ... who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep. It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth. This is your victory. And I know you didn't do this just to win an election. And I know you didn't do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime - two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.

rifice. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.

There's new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair. The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you, we as a people will get there.

Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes, we can. AUDIENCE: can.

AUDIENCE: Yes we can! Yes we can! Yes we can!

Yes,

we

OBAMA: America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves - if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

OBAMA: There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it's been done in America for 221 years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.

This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.

This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.

It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sac-

Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America.

What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night.

Bill Collectors Get Tough, and Complaints Surge By: David B. Caruso, Associated Press NEW YORK - After several years in which Americans were buying things on credit they couldn't afford, a rapidly increasing number are complaining about getting harassed and abused by bill collectors. Nearly 71,000 people filed such complaints with the Federal Trade Commission last year, roughly double the number in 2003. In addition, more than 14,000 complained to the Better Business Bureau. Thousands more lodged grievances with state and city officials. "And it is going to get worse," warned David Polino, a Better Business Bureau expert on collection agencies and president of the BBB chapter in upstate New York. "With the recession, with the horrible credit problems, this is going to be off the charts." Regulators and consumer groups say the rise in complaints reflects the rapidly increasing number of Americans who took on more debt than they could handle during the freespending, easy-credit days that preceded the current economic crisis. The complaints are also being attributed to the explosive growth in the number of companies that buy up bad consumer debt at a dis-

Affording College in a Down Economy (NewsUSA) - Ups and downs on Wall Street, the pinch of the current credit crisis and an uncertain economy make students and parents worry about college tuition payments. Tightened credit lines could make borrowing money for college an uphill battle for many American families. But most families can still find ways to send their high-school graduates to school. "You can still make college a reality, even in the middle of a credit crisis," says Martha Holler, spokesperson for Sallie Mae (www.SallieMae.com), the nation's leading saving- and paying-for-college company. "Loans remain readily available to help you pay for college." Despite the crazy credit crunch, students and parents can still find federal student loans regardless of credit score, income, assets or collateral. Federal law fixes student loans at a competitive interest rate, so families won't pay higher rates in a troubled economy. Although other consumer credit is drying up, students and parents can still get federal student loans through Sallie Mae. The company is ready to make federal student loans to every student who needs one at every school across the country. Holler encourages students to educate themselves on how to get college money. She offers the following tips to students and parents looking to pay for higher education: Find free money. Apply for financial aid to access free money. Tap grants and scholarships by filing the Free Application For Federal Student Aid, also called the FAFSA. Fully explore federal student loans. Federal loans are the largest source of student loans and offer more favorable terms than private loans, so get as many federal loans as possible before resorting to private loans. If scholarships, grants and federal loans do not fully cover the cost, fill any gaps with private loans. Holler stresses that it's important to consider the full cost of college and develop a comprehensive plan to pay for tuition as well as other collegerelated expenses.

count and try to collect whatever they can. U.S. law allows creditors to take aggressive steps to collect a debt, including going to court to freeze a debtor's bank accounts. But there are also rules: They may not call before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. They may not repeatedly use the phone to annoy you. They cannot curse or threaten to have you arrested. They cannot lie about the likelihood of legal action, or tack on unwarranted charges. People who owe money are often themselves rude and abusive to bill collectors, use obscene language and hurl death threats. But under the law, bill collectors are not allowed to respond in kind. Nearly 39 percent of the people who complained to the FTC last year accused an agency of either demanding a larger payment than legally allowed, or seeking money they didn't owe at all. Bob Silvers of San Jose, Calif., said a company called Bay Area Credit Service has been hounding him over a disputed $60 ambulance bill from 2002 by bombarding him with calls that begin early in the morning and sometimes continue all day. "I get between three and nine calls a day, six days a week," said Silvers, who claims the agency has ignored his demands to stop calling. "It's just constant harassment." One 72-year-old retiree targeted by the company,

Florence Gifford of Gypsy, W.Va., said she didn't believe she owed anything, but forked over $304 anyway after collectors used foul language and threatened to send a sheriff's deputy to her door. The collection industry is quick to point out that complaints don't necessarily equal improper conduct. The company being sued in West Virginia, Charles Howell and Associates, denied its collectors had used bad language or threatened anyone with arrest. “There’s no lick of any sort of proof," said the company's president, Gregory Wells. "The only thing they have is the word of someone who owes money and is trying to get out of paying." Ernestine Williams, a 55year-old widow in Morristown, N.J., walked into her bank over the summer to make a deposit, only to learn that her account had been frozen at the request of a company that purchased her delinquent Pep Boys repair bill. The company is demanding $2,135 immediately to unfreeze her account - an amount that includes about $400 in fees and interest on top of her original debt. Williams said she has had financial problems since her husband died and needs more time to pay. "It's ludicrous," Williams said. "I'm trying to get back on my feet so I can pay my bills. It's embarrassing. I've already pawned all my jewelry. I don't have anything.

Author Mikaeli King paints a portrait of Barack Obama in fine art, written word and the spoken word as she explores the mind of Senator Obama for President in her new Tribute on CD and in fine art print. The Tribute makes a poignant statement for African Americans and other races who would dare to consider Barack Obama as the hope for their futures and that of their children, in which the question is asked, "Is it a Time for change?" The release of the Tribute on CD, written fine art print takes place today and as a fine art Commemorative piece November 4, 2008. (Commemorative price varies) Author Mikaeli King, The Inspirational Gal(TM), takes a walk into the mind of Barack Obama and paints a portrait of realism that is honest and haunting of America. A voice that shines light on broken segments in the plight of America to fully embrace a "new generation" of people who can be of all races as long as they are ready to change or be changed by love and hope and the inspirational voice of Senator Barack Obama. The piece is one King believes carries a message to the African American Community, because it relates to the strength of our people to overcome and succeed in life in America. King believes Senator Obama has not been the first choices of every African American, from the beginning of his vie for the President of the United States. Somewhere in the hearts of many had been a fear that "He can't win or they won't let him." Yet, King has spoken to blacks, whites, Latinos and Asians who believe that the time for change is now. The art is highlighted by using the silhouette of Obama and placing the written Tribute in his mind and visually displaying the portrait in Black and White.

Mikaeli King The Inspirational Gal's(TM) message is reminiscent of a voice which hoped for a dream with "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr" that overpowered racial division and bigotry. The Inspirational Gal's work talks about the "hope" of the new America and stands on its own with a voice that stirs in the African American mind the truths about lies spoken from generation to generation. "A Hope," takes on the personality of Obama yet speaks out to the reader as a non gender noun that personifies the pains, inspirations, growth and answer to the problems of the past. The spoken word Tribute on CD is accompanied by an anthem, "A Strong Wall Against Violence," which carries a message of "unity." (Price for the CD is $9.99 at www.cdbaby.com/cd/inspi rationalgal and available at Amazon.com UPC63447988198) 0 King has also included in her Tribute to Barack on CD, an opening message which she feels is so important that she tells everyone, "When ever you see change, you must remember that hope came first. Someone prayed, died, gave up something in order for that change to come. Someone paid a price for that change."

HELP A CHILD THIS CHRISTMAS COLUMBIA, SC— Carolina Children's Home is working diligently to provide Christmas gifts for 60+ children who’ve probably never had one before. This year you can make Christmas a special time at Carolina Children's Home by sponsoring a resident or cottage, volunteering to wrap gifts or by simply making a donation. During this season of giving, think about being an important part of a child’s life through one of the following ways. Sponsor a child: When you sponsor a child you are given his or her Wish List with the understanding that you can buy all the items on the list or choose only a few to purchase. The kids will ask for both practical and fun items and open their gifts on Christmas Day. We invite both individuals and groups to come to campus and wrap during the month of December. Give a donation through the Guardian Angel Project: When you donate $10 or more the Home will honor a loved one with a personalized letter, a bookmark and a note indicating you as the giver of this very special gift. The holidays can be a hard time for our residents, yet donors and staff work hard at the Home to make it enjoyable. Keeping in mind the true meaning of Christmas, the Home encourages the community to get involved this holiday season by making this a special time of year for an adolescent living at Carolina Children's Home.

St. Louis Program Helps Ex-Offenders Turn From Life of Crime By. Jessica Bassett Special to the NNPA from the St. Louis American

ment. Most of ARCHS initial funding came from a Department of Labor grant, but once the grant ended in September ARCHS was responsible for sustaining funding on its own. “We’re going to continue to deliver services in some shape of form,” Kimbrough said. “It is too much of a successful program to be discontinued.” About six weeks into the job, Henderson is pleased with Bobo’s efforts. She was first unsure about hiring an ex-offender but Bob and ARCHS have

ST. LOUIS (NNPA) After nine years of criminal activity, Antonio Bobo decided to leave that life and go straight. “You just get tired of selling drugs, being shot at, being robbed and robbing people,” said Bobo, a former star athlete at Vashon High School. Thanks to a community partnership led by Area Resources for Community and Human Services (ARCHS) formed to help move ex-offenders from prison to the workforce, Bobo is working legally for one of the first times in his life n even after his incarceration. He is grateful for the job that he landed at Midas as a technician two months ago. “I’m blessed,” Bobo said. St. Louis is home to more than 22,500 ex-offenders. Initiated last year by a $1.9 million U.S. Labor Department grant, ARCHS teamed with 18 community partners (including businesses, the justice system, faith-based organizations, and community groups) to provide exoffender support. They are coming back to the same challenges faced prior to incarceration, including poverty, high unemployment and crime, said Wendell Kimbrough, CEO of ARCHS. But the partnership, now almost in its second year, is making a difference. In the first year of the reen-

try program, 640 exoffenders have been served, surpassing the goal of 488. With the help of reentry partners, such as Rankin Technical Training, more than 350 of those have been placed in jobs with living wages. Studies have shown that unemployed ex-offenders are three times more likely to return to prison than those who land jobs. “Everyone deserves a second chance,” said Lisa Henderson, service manager of Midas Auto Service, whose company hires ARCHS’ reentry participants. All she asks is that they come to work, do the job and meet the minimum requirements to be a general service technician. Prior to prison, Bobo was a former star basketball player at Vashon High

School who had signed with Oklahoma University, but never played. He said he started selling drugs at first to pay his tuition, but then quickly got sucked into the quick money and fast lifestyle. “When you’re on the streets, time really passes you by,” said Bobo, who had gotten shot twice in the legs. “I was so attracted to the lifestyle that when I looked up, I had a federal case and it was too late for me to go back to school.” A drug conviction landed him 36 months in federal prison. Bobo said he was on the Internet every day applying for jobs from fast food to warehouse work after his release nearly two years ago. But he had been turned down time and time again.

Estimating the Total Cost of College

“Basically, I was just trying to find any job that would keep me away from the streets,” Bobo said. ARCHS gave him the push he needed. He took a training class on basic automotive through the ARCHS program. Training is also offered in catering, computers, manufacturing, construction, carpentry, customer service, nursing and culinary arts. Some of the courses in the ARCHS program, such as the culinary arts course at St. Louis Community College, include college credit. In addition to job training, ARCHS helps in finding housing, drug and mental health counseling, social support, transportation, education and employ-

(NewsUSA) - It's no secret that college tuition has gone up over the years, but how easy is it to calculate the total cost of college, and what income is required to stay financially healthy after graduation? A new Sallie Mae study conducted by Gallup, "How America Pays for College," found that while 58 percent of families reported ruling out schools because of cost at some point during the application process, another 42 percent of families did not limit their search based on cost -; even after reviewing financial aid packages. In total, 70 percent of students and parents said a student's expected postgraduation income either was not considered or did not

So-Called Victim in Duke Lacrosse Rape Hoax Bears No Blame? By: Gregory P. Kane, BlackAmericaWeb.com Memo to Crystal Mangum: if you need some cheddar, just hop back on the pole, girlfriend. Believe me, Mangum needs to get back on that striptease pole. Over two years ago, Mangum accused three lacrosse players at Duke University of raping her at a team party. Mangum and another woman - both described as “exotic dancers” in media accounts, but you and I know that’s only a nice term for “strippers” were hired to shake their fannies at the party. Mangum accused three white players of raping her. No DNA evidence was found to corroborate her claim. No eyewitness account supported her version of events. The three players were eventually cut loose, and well they should have been. Former Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong, who bought into Mangum’s tall tale, lost his job. The Duke lacrosse team had its season canceled. Several players ended up transferring to other schools.

So two years after Mangum causes all this mischief - and that’s putting it kindly - what does she do? Why, write a book and claim that she really, really was sexually assaulted, of course. Mangum released details about the book at a news conference last week. The title of the book is one meant to tug at your heartstrings: “The Last Dance for Grace: The Crystal Mangum Story.”

Carolina’s fault? Crystal Mangum gets no part of the blame in this shameless episode? Now don’t get me wrong. Those Duke lacrosse players, who became the victimhood poster boys for conservative pundits, deserved part of the blame. I’ve written as much on this Web site, in at least two columns. But the white guys have already been in that particular bar-

keys as she gave him a lap dance. Then she stole the taxi and led police on a drunken, high-speed chase through Durham that ended with her facing a wealth of charges, among them larceny, DWI and assault on a government official. Mangum also previously claimed that three men sexually assaulted her when she was in her teens. That allegation wasn’t found to

mony, her credibility and her integrity to shreds. It’s hard to believe that’s what Mangum really wanted. It’s far easier to believe that she does want some money and came up with the idea of this book to make some ready cash. That’s what Joseph Cheshire, one of the defense attorneys for the three accused lacrosse players, said in a Chicago Tribune story. “If Crystal Mangum truly wants to heal,” Cheshire said, “get on with her life and have others learn from her experiences, she would

You can feel the lump in your throat already, can’t you?

Most impartial observers will be inclined to agree with Cheshire. Mangum wants to make some money and seems to care little how she does it. Rehashing allegations of men found not culpable isn’t the way to go. But hopping back on that pole might be.

Here’s an excerpt from this appalling screed: “Even as I try to move on with my life, I still find it necessary to take one more stand and fight. I want to assert, without equivocation, that I was assaulted. Make of that what you will. You will decide what that means to you because the state of North Carolina saw fit not to look at all that happened the night I became infamous.” So let me get this straight: It’s the state of North

I’m not trying to judge the woman, but I am trying to think of the last time I heard the phrase “a stripper of high moral character” and darn it, I can’t seem to remember ever hearing it. ment opportunities. Why? The market sees constant ups and downs. Buying when the market's high means greater upfront costs. And because the market cannot rise indefinitely, property investors must constantly watch for the bubble to pop. In a down market, the question is not "if," but "when" the market will improve. If investors can buy properties at rock-bottom prices, they can afford to maintain the home until the market improves. At that point, the investor can sell the home both to recoup their buying and operating costs and to make a profit. Some companies are looking to profit on the down housing market. Deer Park Development Corporation, a Nevada-based company, is purchasing foreclosed homes in Arizona, Nevada, California and Florida, some of the areas most affected by the down market. Nevada, for example, sees more foreclosures than any other state -; million-dollar properties can be bought for half their building costs. Between May and June, Californian banks foreclosed on 40 percent of the homes on the market. Deer Park Development Corporation's agents and brokers draw on 35 years of experience -; they have seen down markets before, so they can easily identify promising properties. When Deer Park Development Corporation finds a home that it wants to acquire as an investment, it works with the homeowner or bank to purchase the home at a 50 percent discount. But the company does not profit at homeowner's expense. It negotiates with homeowners so that people can rent their homes after the sale. When the original homeowner's lease expires, Deer Park Development Corporation allows former homeowners to repurchase their properties .

The family attended a Halloween celebration in downtown Sumter, 45 miles east of Columbia, then stopped at Patrick's house because the porch light was on, police said. Another sibling was with them, but wasn't hurt. Police said at least two of the boys were wearing ghoulish masks when they knocked on the door. The boys' mother and a toddler stayed in the car nearby.

to kill. Police said they also charged a 19-year-old in his home, Ericka Patrice Pee, with obstruction of justice when she was caught trying to run away after the shooting with $7,500 in cash. Patterson did not give an explanation for the money.

"He wasn't going to be robbed again, and he wasn't going to be shot again," Patterson said Saturday at a news conference.

Pee's two-year-old daughter was inside during the shooting and is now being cared for by family members.

She said T.J., a bright young man, suffered multiple wounds, including a fatal shot to his head. No one answered the door at the family's home Saturday.

Patterson said Patrick had multiple drug convictions but police do not believe he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the shooting. Authorities did not know if Patrick or Pee had attorneys. Both are being held without bond.

Patrick emptied his AK-47, shooting at least 29 times through his front door, walls and windows after hearing the knock, Police Chief Patty Patterson said.

"This is by far one of the worst tragedies that I have had to personally experience," Patterson said. "It happened basically because kids were out doing what they would normally do on Halloween." Patrick has been charged with murder, three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, and one count of assault with intent

A man who identified himself as Patrick's brother but declined to give his name said in a call to The Associated Press that he believed Patrick was suffering from post-traumatic stress after a break-in last December. The man's account matched the information police provided.

"We want to let his family know that this is a total tragic accident," he said. "He was trying to protect his family." Patrick's home is off a busy, two-lane road in Sumter, a city of about 40,000 people. On Saturday, shattered glass still covered the front stoop and about 20 bullet holes peppered the front door and a front-window casement. A firefighter used a hose to wash bloodstains away. The shooting shocked residents of a neighborhood where most people know each other well. "I just hate it that that little kid got killed. It used to be the quietest place. I knew everybody and everybody knew me," said Vivian Johnson, 81, who lives two doors from Patrick and Pee but said she did not know them. County Councilman Charles Edens said he lives just a few blocks away and passed the crime scene on his way back from trick-ortreating with his 13-yearold daughter, who was upset by the news. "It's going to put a dampening on Halloween," Eden said. "I would think twice about going to a door that we don't know who lives behind."

Samuel Snow's widow, Margaret, and son, Ray, received a check for $27,580 on Thursday, 64 years after Snow was wrongly convicted of participating in a riot that led to his imprisonment for more

than a year. Snow died at age 83 in July, hours after the Army apologized and reversed his dishonorable discharge. Ray Snow compared his father to the Biblical hero Job - an upright man who was punished for no good reason.

The CADD Technician will support roadway design work for our Charleston, SC office. Duties include drafting assignments from red-line markups, assistance w/ plan preparation, and/or as directed by supervisor. Position will require the ability to spend 1 week in Columbia to learn CADD and other design procedures.

"A good, upright man who was struck down ... yet he held on," Ray Snow, 56, a school teacher, said after his family received the check. "He held onto to the belief that this could be done."

Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Prior CADD training or experience, preferably Microstation. Must be a Charleston County resident.

Snow was among 43 black soldiers court-martialed for participating in a 1944 riot at Fort Lawton in Seattle that led to the lynching of an Italian prisoner of war. Those found guilty of rioting, 28 in all, were sentenced to as much as 25 years in prison. It was one of the largest courts martial of World War II.

Not long afterward, Snow received a check for $725 - the amount the Army said he would have been paid between the time he was convicted and the time he was released from prison about 15 months later. It was not adjusted for inflation and failed to include 64 years worth of interest. At the time, the Army claimed the amount was in keeping with regulations. Earlier this year, U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., and U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, DFla., filed legislation to award interest on the back pay owed Snow and any other soldier who has a conviction overturned by courts or the Army Board for Correction of Military Records. It was passed as part of the Defense Authorization Bill. "This is an American tragedy, along with an American success story," said Nelson, who presented the check to Snow's family at his office in Orlando. "It's the story of a young man who served his country and was not treated right by his government."

For most of his life, Snow never talked about his dishonorable discharge or what happened at Fort Lawton, his son said. He led a quiet, humble, church-going life as a janitor in Leesburg, Fla., and raised and educated two sons with his wife. In the mid-1970s, his status was upgraded to "general under honorable conditions discharge," allowing him to get medical benefits, but it fell short of his goal of an honorable discharge. The momentum to get an honorable discharge gained strength after Seattle reporter Jack Hamann wrote a 2005 book about the incident, "On American Soil: How Justice Became a Casualty of World War II." "I feel very sad because he wasn't here to see this," said Margaret Snow, 79. "He did get to see his honorable discharge and I know he would be pleased about this too."

Fighting Escalates in Congo, As Peacekeepers Flee Special to the NNPA from GIN (GIN) - Tutsi insurgents loyal to renegade General Laurent Nkunda launched a major offensive on Sunday, advancing to within 12 miles of Goma, destroying two UN armored vehicles and forcing thousands of civilians to flee south towards Goma town. Some 17,000 U.N. peacekeepers have begun packing their bags to leave, angering local people who blame them for failing to prevent the rebel advance. Riots were reported at the UN base in Goma on Monday. Crowds shattered windows, damaged cars and one person was killed. Nkunda claims he is defending Tutsis from Rwandan Hutu renegades who fled into the Congo after their military defeat in neighboring Rwanda in 1994. In that year, some half a million Rwandan Tutsis were slaughtered by Hutu militia in what has become known as the Rwandan Genocide. Rwanda's now dominant Tutsi rulers fear these renegades could threaten genocide again. A cease-fire between the government and Nkunda signed in January failed to hold and new fighting is underway with Nkunda declaring he will ''liberate'' all of Congo, a country the size of Western Europe with vast reserves of diamonds, gold and other resources.
