Teaching Future Generations About God (Ps. 78:1-8) Hebrew azan which means to “hear, listen with understanding,” and then “to be obedient” (Isa. 51:4) Dark sayings/riddles/parables – illustrations with deep, hidden meanings of great spiritual significance (Matt. 13:35, Prov. 1:5-6) God’s counsel is for the benefit of all generations (Ps. 33:11) We have an affirmative duty to teach future generations about God (Gen. 18:19, Deut. 4:9-10, 6:7 & 21, 11:19, Joel 1:3, Ps. 48:13, 71:18, 102:18, 145:4, Prov. 22:6, Josh. 4:6, Joel 1:3, Esth. 9:28, Eph. 6:4) Note: Children should also seek to learn about God from parents/elders (Deut. 32:7) Teach how? With word & song Demonstrate praise to all generations (Ps. 79:13) Sing of his mercy and faithfulness to all generations (Ps. 89:1) Celebrate feasts in remembrance of God’s works (Ex. 12:14, 17 & 42, 13:8-10, 31:13 & 16, Lev. 23:41 & 43, Luke 22:19-20) About what? His praiseworthy/glorious deeds (Isa. 63:7) His power (Deut. 4:34, Ps. 145.4-5) His wonders (Ps. 98:1) His statutes/law/commandments (Deut. 4:8, 27:3, Ps. 147:19) To what end? If we teach them about these things they might have confidence in God and observe His commandments (Ps. 78:7, 40:4, Jer. 17:7, Deut. 5:29) And if we don’t? Our homes will not be blessed (Ps. 127:1-2) In a generation where God is forgotten, there is perversion and calamity (Deut. 32:18-28) A survey taken a few years ago revealed “that over half of the teenagers could not name even one of the four gospels. In multiple choice questions, some decided that the epistles were the wives of the apostles, that Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife and that Moses was the father of Jesus (from a message by Haddon Robinson). Spiritual child neglect: We spend thousands of dollars strengthening and straightening children’s teeth, but we stand by as they develop crooked hearts and twisted lives. We purchase
the latest volumes on child care so we can raise children by the book, but we have concentrated on the wrong book! Then we act shocked when our children follow the system of the world, or when so few young people have the stamina and discernment to withstand the intense deceptions and temptations of our times. But its because we have too often failed to effectively communicate the eternal truths of the God’s Word in an atmosphere that truly communicates the reality of God along with God’s love and grace. Often we are zealous to convert the heathen in other lands and fail to teach our own children that sit between our feet every day. When we fail to tell our children about the truth/gospel, we are in essence concealing it from them and from future generations.
