Chicken Little

Yarn: Nashua Creative Focus Cotton: 1 Skein Red (), 1 Skein Blue (), 1 Skein Green() Materials: 16” US Size 6 Needles, US Size 6 DPNs, 1 Yard Black Cotton for Eye, & Darning Needle Gauge: 22 Stitches to 4” in Stockinette Stitch on US Size 6



Hat Pattern: Using the circular needles, cast on 88 stitches. Row 1: Join in the round, place a stitch marker to indicate beginning of row, and knit every stitch with Green Row 2: Knit every other stitch Green then Blue Row 3: Knit every other stitch Blue then Green Note* If you are not comfortable with this technique it can be left out Change to Green and knit every row for 5” Change to DPNs and Begin Decreasing: Row 1: *Knit 6, Knit 2 together; repeat from *around Row 2 & Every Even Row: Knit Row 3: *Knit 5, Knit 2 together; repeat from * around Row 5: *Knit 4, Knit 2 together; repeat from * around Row 7: *Knit 3, Knit 2 together; repeat from * around Row 9: *Knit 2, Knit 2 together; repeat from * around Row 11: *Knit 1, Knit 2 together; repeat from * around Row 13: *Knit 2 together all the way around until 2 stitches remain, Knit 2 There are 12 stitches remaining. Using three DPN’s, place 4 stitches on each DPN. Work each three DPN into 3 ½” Icords: one in blue, one in green, and one in red. To finish, tie the three cords in one knot together. Knit Chicken: Cast on 15 stitches Rows 1-4 Knit in Stockinette Row 5: Knit 1, Knit 2 together, K9, Slip Slip Knit, Knit 1 Rows 6, 8,10,12,14,16: Purl Row 7: Knit1, Knit 2 together, K7, Slip Slip Knit, Knit 1 Row 9: Knit Row 11: Knit 1, Knit 2 together, K5, Slip Slip Knit, Knit 1 Row 13: Knit 1, Knit 2 together, K3, Slip Slip Knit, Knit 1 Row 15: Knit 1, Knit 3 together, Slip Slip Knit, Knit 1 Row 17: Knit 2 together, Slip Slip Knit Row 18: Purl 2 together, break yarn and knot to finish.

Finished Size: 18” to fit child 0-6 months Finishing: Using DPNs and Blue Yarn, cast on 5 stitches and knit a 19” I-cord (don’t break and finish until you have whip stitched it onto the brim of the hat…I un-knit mine to 18” and finished when I was sure it would make it around). Sew Chicken onto left side of hat and embroider the beak and wing in blue. Using the Red Yarn, stitch on the feet with 2 toes and the tail with 3 feathers. Using the Black Cotton, stitch a small X for the chicken’s eye. Weaving the ends in the back will get tedious but the cuteness of the hat far outweighs the challenge!
