The Experiment Of Investigating The Production Of Ethene Gas From Banana Experiment 1 Aim:
To suggest on investigating the banana produce ethene gas
Hypothesis
The bromine water react with ethene to become colourless.
Apparatus:
Test tube, boiling tube, stopper, delivery tube, basin, knife, blender
Material:
Banana, water, distilled water, bromine solution.
Variable:
Manipulated: The present of ethane. Responding: The colour of the bromine solution. Fixed: Volume of bromine
Procedure:
Activity A (Investigate the production of ethene gas from banana)
1.The banana are peel off using knife. 2. Then, banana is mixed with 10ml distilled water,it is mashed using a blender. 3. Next, the mashed banana is placed in the boiling tube. 4.The boiling tube is closed using the stopper and the delivery tube is channeled to the other test tube that contain 5 drop of bromine solution, as showed in the Figure 1.0 below

Experiment 2 Aim: Hypothesis
To suggest on investigating that the ripe banana produce ethene gas than unripe banana. The ethene gas from the ripe banana decolourise bromine solution faster than the ethene gas from the unripe banana.
Apparatus:
Test tube, boiling tube, stopper, delivery tube, knife, blender, stopwatch
Material:
Banana, water, distilled water, bromine solution.
Variable:
Manipulated: Type of banana. Responding: The time taken for colour of the bromine solutionto turn colourless. Fixed: Volume of bromine,and the weight of banana. Activity B (Comparing the production of ethene gas between ripe banana and unripe banana ) 2
1. The ripe banana are peel off using knife. 2. Then, ripe banana is mixed with 10ml of distilled water and mashed using a blenderit is weight at 70grams. 3. Next, the ripe mashed banana is placed in the boiling tube. 4.The boiling tube is closed using the stopper and the delivery tube is channeled to the other test tube that contain 5 drop of bromine solution, as showed in the Figure 2.0 below

Discussion 1. The ethene gas changed the colour of bromine solution from brownish red to colourless, it prove that the banana producing ethene gas. 2. The ripe banana produces more ethene gas than the unripe banana. 3. The volume of ethene gas produce by the ripe banana is more than the unripe banana,therefore the bromine solution that is react from the ripe banana become colourless faster than from the unripe banana. 4. The ethene gas are produce during the ripening of the fruit.Banana is one example of fruit that produce ethene gas during ripening. 5.In this experiment to make sure it is the “fair test” the weight of the banana is the same that is 70g.The same method and apparatus is same, also the procedure, the only thing that is different is only the type of banana that is ripe and unripe. 6.The reaction that takes placed is showed in the form of equation below:
Ethene = C2H4 Bromine = Br2 Addition of Bromine
Conclusion
CH2=CH2 + Br2
----->
CH2BrCH2Br 1,2-dibromoethane
Banana producing ethene gas therefore it turn the bromine solution to become colourless.,The ripe banana producing more ethene gas than the unripe banana as the time taken for the ripe banana to decolourise the bromine solution is lesser than the unripe banana.The hypothesis is accepted. REFLECTION

Thank to god as I can finish this Science Project on time finally. We were given this task in middle July by our lecturer, Madam Rozinawati and we had told to hand in the task on 9 August 2009. We admitted that at first, we felt so blur and a little bit nervous because we do not know how and what to do in completing this project. Our task was to do an experiment on ethene gas that is produce in banana. We are divided into 10 groups which 2 person for each group to do the experiment. We should do complete this project together with our own pair but the report and the procedure report should be done individually. I used the information and some notes given to find the simplest method extracting the banana to produce ethene gas. The reason is all fruit producing ethene gas during ripening. Along the way, in doing this project, I gained a lot of knowledge about the fruit can produce ethene that I do not know before. A few problems occurred along the time we attempt to finish this task. The problems that we got to face are such as, time constraint and to do the experiment that we need to do, this is because we could not find the time to make up the experiment. Besides, I also do not understand what to do at the beginning of the experiment. After I search the information from internet, and also do some discussion with my friends, I could understand and imagine what I should do actually. From all above, honestly I feel happy and enjoy doing this task because it relates with science and our daily life. I want to thank my science lecturers and all my friends for helping me to find the information. I hope my lecturer will be satisfied and happy with this chemistry project report .Once again I would like to thank to all who have given support until this project was completed successfully
