WINE COUNTRY NEWS WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
WOOD WINERY All In The Family by Mark Storer
C
ool climate growing, with daytime temperatures that don’t often exceed 80 degrees, and cool nighttime fog set San Luis Obispo apart from many other vineyard lands in California. Those conditions are the reason for the peppery, earthy Syrahs for which the area has become famous. And it’s here that Craig and Sheri Wood own an 80acre ranch, 32 of which are vineyards. “We thought we’d plant grapes as a hobby,” says Sheri Wood. As it turns out, Wood Winery became much more than that. “It became a lucrative business for us as well as a passion,” she adds. The vineyards the Woods have grown are named for the family. There’s Sheri’s vineyard, Gina’s vineyard and Jackson’s vineyard, the latter two being the Woods’ two children. They purchased the land in the mid 1990s and planting a vineyard was the furthest thing from their minds. But a chance encounter at a local restaurant changed the Wood family’s destiny and by happy accident, Wild Wood Winery was born. “It was actually a great story,” says Craig.
6
“We were out to dinner one night and my wife got to talking to the bartender who was a Cal Poly viticultural student.” Eventually, that led to Cal Poly University’s Keith Patterson coming out to the Wood family’s ranch. Patterson is a member of the viticulture program at the university. “He told us we had to plant Syrah here and so, we did,” says Wood. And that began an education that involved Wood picking up the books in the Cal Poly viticultural program. Not a graduate of anyone’s wine or oenology school, Wood is self-taught and considers himself a winegrower, not a winemaker. Eventually, he began talking to winemakers in the area and they all wanted to buy fruit from his vineyards. He thought there must be a reason why and so he began to make his own wine. “It all starts there in the vineyard,” he says. “That’s where the wine is made.” This fall and winter, the Woods are concentrating on the tasting room in Arroyo Grande. “We’re available for private parties at the tasting room and we’re holding Girls’ Night Out on select Thursdays as well,” she says. The Girls’ Night Out is part of the SLO www.winecountrythisweek.com
Vintner’s Association’s plan to have the event at member wineries throughout the winter. The plan to rent out the tasting room to private parties, however, is a Wood family original. Renting the tasting room for a private party provides a secluded, classic atmosphere for people to enjoy the benefits of a luxurious wine tasting bar without the regular crowds that can accompany a wine tasting evening. Continuing the focus on lady wine drinkers, Wood Winery is also releasing its latest 100% estate Syrah blend called, “Bling.” “The bottle is embellished with Swarovski Austrian crystals and it’s really for the girls,” says Sheri. “You can never have too much Bling.” It’s perfect for any celebration. The Woods will also be bottling their popular Albarino, an Italian white varietal that more and more people are discovering, as well as their Sangiovese. Both wines sold out when they hit the market and the Woods are happy to have more coming out soon. Focusing on single-vineyard varietals, Wood is careful and thoughtful about production. Wood wines spend two years in the barrel and a year in the bottle before they
WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK WINE COUNTRY NEWS are released. “I’m just now drinking through some of my ’02s and ’03s,” says Craig. This attention to detail and to taste is what sets Wood Winery apart in a crowded field. Wood Winery puts its focus on the family business. “Sheri’s mother and grandmother live here on the ranch and they help out. My daughter Gina lives here, too and she helps me quite a bit.” The youngest member of the family, Jackson, does what he can to pitch in as well. “It’s definitely a family thing,” says Wood. With its tasting room in Arroyo Grande and the vineyards and winery in San Luis Obispo, the Woods have become part of the landscape here. Wood Winery produces about 3,000 cases a year of various wines from their award-winning Syrah and Cabernet to the more elusive Albarino and Sangiovese. Craig has even begun to experiment with blending wines including a Cabernet-Syrah blend that tasting room patrons love. Wood Winery’s Gina’s vineyard 2004 Syrah won Double Gold and Best of Class from the San Francisco Chronicle and Double Gold medals were garnered for their Jackson’s vineyard 2004 Cabernet as well. The Wood Winery’s list of awards, in fact, is extensive and from some of the most prestigious wine competitions from the northern to the southern ends of California and even in the nation. From hobby wine to award-winning and renowned, the Woods have surely come a long way. Visit the Wood Winery tasting room at 136 Bridge Street in Arroyo Grande, open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m and Friday evenings until 7 p.m. for “wine down.” For more information, call (805) 489-9663 or visit the website at www.wildwoodwine.com www.winecountrythisweek.com

Hunt Cellars – Striving for Perfection In 1998 Hunt Cellars released its first wines – including a Zinfandel that earned a 90-point rating from Wine Enthusiast magazine. Obviously, the winemaker had talent from the beginning. Since then many of their Zins have rated 90-93 points and their 2000 Tawny Port “Oldie But Goodie” scored 93 points, one of the highest of any Tawny Port produced in California Just over ten years later, Owner/Winemaker David Hunt continues to refine his talents, and the accolades keep coming. When you walk into the Hunt Cellars tasting room in Paso Robles, you can’t help but notice an impressive collection of gold medals. “Who wants to be second place?” David Hunt once told a visitor who noticed he didn’t display any silver medals awarded to his Hunt Cellars Wines. As the years progress, the accolades, awards and recognitions continue to build with virtually every wine sold at Hunt Cellars winning multiple golds, best of class or scoring 90 points or better. Hunt Cellars was recently heralded as “the next cult winery” by members of the American Wine Society, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and others. Not too many wineries can say that. Hunt attributes his success to a great team from the tasting room staff to the vineyard manager and production assistants. But it’s not the awards that drive David – it’s the pursuit of perfection. He’s been known to spend hours blending and reblending, working to find the ideal balance for each barrel and bottle. Quality fruit from his estate vineyards, combined with extraordinary patience enable Hunt Cellars to produce wines that consistently impress. But it doesn’t take a great winemaker when you start with a great vineyard. David’s wines are produced only from his mountain-top, hillside vineyards. The rocky terrain stresses the vines which, in turn, produces smaller berries with more intense, concentrated fruit flavors. “We’re not in a rush to produce a product,” said Hunt, “until it’s ready.” That could mean leaving wine in the barrel for up to 32 months, if that’s what he feels it needs. There may be awards deco-

rating the tasting room, but the true reward is in the bottle. Hunt Cellars offers a hearty collection of robust reds, each with its own distinct personality, varietal character and long, velvet finish. Hunt feels the finish is the hardest part of winemaking. It’s vital for any wine as it lingers on the palate to leave you wanting more. Hunt, who is blind, said perhaps his own palate has become heightened and more sensitive, allowing him to detect and perfect any subtle inconsistencies. Hunt Cellars wines can be found in several of the country’s most prestigious restaurants such as Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Biltmore Hotels, Four Seasons Luxury Hotels and Resorts, and Ritz Carlton Hotels and Resorts. Hunt Cellars tasting room is located along Highway 46 West in Paso Robles. The rolling hills and oak-studded grounds make an ideal setting for exploring the Hunt Cellars collection. Inside the tasting room, a white grand piano greets guests, reminding them of David’s musical background. A long handcrafted tasting table, built by David and his sons, invites guests to stay and visit. It also serves as the center of warm evenings with the winemaker during winemaker dinners, where guests are often treated to a concert by David. Hunt Cellars’ tasting room is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. throughout the winter and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer. The tasting room is located three miles west of Highway 101 along Highway 46 West at Oakdale Road. The winery is currently accepting dinner reservations for Friday and Saturday night during the Zinfandel Festival in March. For more information, call (805) 237-1600 or visit www.huntcellars.com.

BEN MAYO by Charles Neave
P
aso Robles is an area of great charm and beauty, two things it has been known for, for well over a century. In the last decade or two the world is starting to take notice that it also an area where some great and honest wines are being made. Located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles it is just 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean, and that factor, combined with the topography and the soil and the elevation makes for one interesting place to grow grapes and make wines. At Eberle Winery they have been doing just that since Gary Eberle (Eberle means “small boar” in German) founded the winery that bears his name in 1983. Three years before that he was a co-founder of the Paso Robles Appellation. In 1994 he decided that going underground was a good idea, so 16,000 square feet of caves were built, to assure optimum temperature and humidity, two things which they do naturally. Today his winery produces about 25,00030,000 cases of wine annually, much of it from the surrounding estate vineyards. And now, after all those years in the business of producing wine, Eberle remains one of the top award winners in the country. The wines produced include a Cabernet
10
Sauvignon, Barbera and the Côtes-du-Rôbles – think about the name for a second – a blend of Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache. Then there are Syrah and Shiraz, Chardonnay and Viognier, a Port and even a Muscat Canelli. And that is not even the whole list. Ben Mayo is now the winemaker at Eberle Winery – he took over the reins for the 2003 vintage, and he seems not just comfortable at the winery, but very, very happy with the region as well. “There is an openness that you don’t have in a lot of places. We’re still a rural environment and I don’t think that will change,” he said recently. “This is what Napa Valley used to be like forty or fifty years ago is what people tell me.” As to his philosophy of making wine? “For our wines it is a consistent work in progress where I learn more and more eachyear. I come from an art environment and making wine it is an organic process, just like painting. You never really know when a painting is finished.” Then Ben laughs and says, “I tell people it is like juggling Jell-O. As to his personal favorites? “I think a couple of varietals stand out in our region. The Cabernet Sauvignon being made here – including our own – is exceptional. The Rhone varietals also really suit this region, and my www.winecountrythisweek.com
personal favorite is the Barbera. I see the Barbera varietal as making a female – a feminine – wine. By that I mean one with a delicate structure and sensitive to production manipulation. In fact it is like Pinot Noir in that way, even though we don’t happen to make a Pinot.” When asked about what else he enjoys about this alchemy of turning grapes into fine wine, his answer is simple. “I get excited about seeing what comes in at harvest; I get excited when I see what comes in off the fields each year.” If you want to try these wines for yourself, head to the town of Paso Robles and Eberle Winery. The grounds are charming, looking out over the vineyards, gourmet picnic lunches and private tours and tastings can be arranged, as can a look at the caves (tours daily). And along with it all comes the hospitality for which Paso Robles is justly known. The Eberle Winery tasting room is located 3810 East Highway 46 in Paso Robles It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. (During the summer, the hours are extended from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) For more information on visiting the winery, or the special events they offer, give them a call at (805) 238-9607. Or if you would like, go on their website at www.eberlewinery.com.

PREFERRED RESTAURANTS MAMA’S MEATBALL One pretty reliable way to find out just how good the food at a local restaurant is, is to ask somebody in the restaurant business. Ask a bartender, a waiter, anyone in fact, what they think of Mama’s meatballs in San Luis Obispo and their lips begin to quiver, their eyes roll towards the heavens, they sigh; that is how good Mama’s Meatball is. Set in a small courtyard off of one of the town’s main streets, in a place called the Old Creamery, Mama’s Meatball is actually divided in two. On the right is the take-out where people line up to get their orders of meatballs and more. To the left, fronted by a huge-trunked tree and a water fountain, is the intimate restaurant with it’s mural of the Mediterranean across the back. Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola Allegretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishes, many of them now available in smaller sizes as well, a bow to the economy and his customer’s wishes. Among them are half a dozen soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon and

a refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto choices, both hot and cold paninis (including, of course, one made with meatballs), more pasta dishes than there is space here to share (though the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodka – homemade ravioli filled with chicken and served in a vodka sauce – cannot go unmentioned). There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well as any number of traditional and specialty pizzas (now available in two sizes) and some far too-tempting desserts. Mama’s Meatball is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except Sunday. They are located in the Old Creamery plaza at 570 Higuera Street, San Luis Obispo. They are also known for their very popular catering services, which work with groups (including weddings) of every type and size. Join some of America’s leading producers of Rhone varietals as they explore what makes Paso Robles so ideal for this extended grape family. “This is an opportunity for enthusiasts to interact directly with the winemakers to learn more about Rhone wines,” said Jason Haas of Tablas Creek Winery. “We will be discussing the various Rhone varietals being produced in Paso Robles, what makes this area ideally suited to these wines, and where we, as winemakers, are going next.”
12
The fun and information-rich day will include a “Rhone Essentials” Seminar, Vintners’ Lunch and Walk-around Tasting of more than 150 Rhone wines produced in Paso Robles. The “Rhone Essentials” Seminar offers the opportunity to taste examples of the most important single-varietal Rhone wines, including Viognier, Roussanne, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, as well as an exploration of Rhone blends. At each stage, participants will hear from the winemakers and principals who have chosen the Rhone Ranger route and helped give Paso Robles its new identity as the “Rhone Zone.” The seminar panel will be moderated, recorded and podcasted by Host Brian Clark of Grape Radio (www.graperadio.com). Directly following, seminar participants can join the Rhone Rangers principals and winemakers at an informal Vintners’ Lunch prepared by Executive Chef Jeffrey Scott. Producers will freely pass their Rhone wines around the tables, offering an extended opportunity to interact and explore the range of Rhones produced in Paso Robles. PREMIER ACCOMMODATIONS Santa Ynez Inn: Santa Barbara County’s Premier Wine Country Destination by Mark Storer When the Santa Ynez Inn opened its doors in October of 2001, it was with the purpose of providing a luxurious Victorian Inn experience right in the heart of Santa Barbara County’s Wine Country. That mission has been accomplished and with the recent addition of six new rooms, the Inn is making its mark in the quiet rolling hills of Santa Ynez. “Our rooms are between 500 and 750 square feet each,” says General Manager Rick Segovia. “All of them have antique furnishings and they’re all unique.” That might be a bit of an understatement. Consider the heated tile floors for the steam showers, the fireplaces and balcony or patio in each room or the Whirlpool tubs with separate showers. The Santa Ynez Inn is all about luxuriating in
the quiet of the Santa Ynez Valley. Located right off of Highway 246, near Solvang and Los Olivos, the Inn’s gardens and the Victorian-era building itself are an inviting oasis here where customer service is key. “We feature getaway golf packages and romance packages,” says Segovia, “but we also offer mid-week package specials.” With plenty of space for banquets and weddings, the Inn has become a destination spot as well. Segovia and his staff provide a full on-site catering kitchen and the Inn’s chef will create the menu and do the cooking. The lawn and gardens provide a spacious, beautiful and secluded setting for special events and the staff can even assist with decorations, flowers and other needs. The Inn also provides connections, reservations and suggestions for the many activi-
ties available in the area. From glider rides above the vineyards to horseback riding right through them and from bird-watching to world-class golf, the staff of the Inn will see to it that you’re given the chance to do more than taste wine, though they can arrange that, too. A complete spa featuring massages, a fitness center and even aromatherapy sessions completes what is the ultimate Wine Country getaway in Santa Barbara County.

WILD HORSE WINERY by Mark Storer
W
ith success like Wild Horse Winery has had, one might be surprised to learn that the only estate wines they produce are from little known varietals like Blaufrankisch and Verdelho. These grapes are not the powerhouse Syrah or Pinot Noir so well known on the Central Coast. But, that’s not entirely surprising since Wild Horse has always been a winery that likes its maverick status. Having just finished celebrating 25 years of winemaking, Wild Horse enters its 26th year with a few new names, the same serious Central Coast quality and increased production. “We’re at 220,000 cases a year currently,” says tasting room manager Leslie Churchill, who came to Wild Horse six months ago from the Napa Valley. “We’ve just released our new Syrah and we have four different Pinot Noirs in the market currently.” Owned by Constellation Brands, Wild
14
Horse has retained its focus on local growing, including an active “Employee’s Garden” featuring many varieties of heirloom tomatoes, fig trees, herb garden and other such delights. “We source our grapes entirely from the Central Coast,” says Churchill who transferred to Wild Horse from the Franciscan Winery also owned by Constellation. “We want to maintain that focus and so our wines come from the Santa Maria Valley as well as places like Bien Nacido vineyard and even the Lime Kiln region in San Benito County.” Wild Horse’s tasting room pays homage to its namesake keeping a southwestern theme with a rugged look, a wooden bar and, of course, a friendly staff of wine pourers to help customers. “It’s still a pretty small room considering the size of the winery,” says Churchill. “But we can get to everyone that way. It’s cozy,” she says. Churchill isn’t the only new face at Wild Horse. Just last summer, Clay Brock, formerly of Zaca Mesa among many others, including Edna Valley, came to Wild Horse to become www.winecountrythisweek.com
Director of Winemaking. It was veteran Central Coast winemaker Ken Volk who started Wild Horse in the ’80s and grew it to nearly the size it is today. Brock’s vision seems to differ little, too. A passion for great wines sourced from the finest vineyards on the Central Coast drives Wild Horse’s vintage releases. In addition, winemaker Chrissy Whitman has joined the herd at Wild Horse along with Brock to keep the horses running, as it were. Wild Horse’s own words do more than create an image, actually. They tell the story of this fabled Central Coast winery that continues to be at the forefront of quality wines made with serious attention to detail. What are those words? “Unbridled Passion.” Wild Horse Winery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Exit Vineyard Road off of Highway 101 in Templeton, go east and turn right on Templeton Road. Central Coast Folk Festival The Boutique Hotel Collection’s first annual Central Coast Folk Festival, celebrating the American heritage of music and food, will strum into the San Luis Obispo area January 15-18. The festival will take place at the collection’s five San Luis Obispo County properties. Participating Boutique Hotel Collection properties include the Sea Venture Resort and The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach, Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort and the Apple Farm in San Luis Obispo, and the Inn at Morro Bay in Morro Bay. A variety of events will take the stage throughout the five days, including concerts, folk storytelling, a western country swing and line dancing event and even a sing-along. Each of the Boutique Hotel Collection properties will also showcase live folk music at their respective restaurants during the dinner hour, along with a prix-fixe menu representing each chef’s interpretation of “California Heritage Cuisine.” For more information about the festival, contact Casey Moss at The Cliffs Resort; (805) 773-5000, or email

PASO ROBLES WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK
Paso Robles Zinfandel Festival Offers New Event Components Tickets are on Sale for the 17th Annual Festival, March 20-22 Paso Robles Wine Country seems to be in the news quite a bit these days. With mentions in national publications like Bon Appetit, Everyday with Rachel Ray, Outside’s Go Magazine and the New York Times, it’s no wonder that Paso Robles Wine Country is on the tip of everyone’s collective conversational palate. Although its only now being discovered by many, Paso Robles’s Wine Country history dates back to the early 1900s when Zinfandel was establishing its place as California’s heritage variety. In 1992 the Paso Robles wine region began a small celebration in recognition of Zinfandel. These wines from Paso Robles were quickly becoming popular as the area was perceived as a prime growing region. Fast forward seventeen years into 2009 and the area is set to celebrate the 17th Annual Paso Robles Zinfandel Festival and Wine Country Auction. Over the years this event has
20
grown and morphed in many ways to become the gem that it is today providing visitors a fantastic way to discover Paso Robles Wine Country and raising funds to benefit the vineyard worker community. Zin Fest, as it’s affectionately called, will take place on March 20-22. The event weekend begins with a new component on Friday afternoon called – RESERVE. This enticing pre-party takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. and is an exploration into the exceptional qualities of Zinfandel by providing event goers a taste of Reserve and Barrel Sample Zinfandel and Zinfandel blend wines. Saturday, March 21, the festivities continue with the Wine Country Auction followed by the marquee Zinfandel Festival Grand Tasting. The Wine Country Auction is an opportunity for festival goers to bid on unique auction lots that are not available through regular retail channels. The area’s growers, winemakers and hospitality businesses come together to create packages that are unique to the Wine Country Auction. Proceeds raised at the Wine Country Auction are gifted back to the community in support of causes benefiting health, education and community services for the vineyard worker population. The Wine Country Auction begins at 4:30 p.m. and concludes just in time for the main event – The Grand Tasting – at 7 p.m. The Zinfandel Festival Grand Tasting brings together more than 40 Paso Robles producers in a walk-around tasting event where attendees sample more than 100 Zinfandel and Zinfandel blend wines. This popular element of the festival suggests having some new surprises for 2009 along with the guarantee of great wines and bites of the area’s exceptional cuisine. The three elements of the Zinfandel Festival weekend take place at the Paso Robles event center, but the festivities do not end there. Look for more than 130 wineries to hold their own individual events throughout the weekend, including Sunday when they open their doors for many all day celebrations. You can find out more information on Paso Robles Wine Country and the 17th Annual Paso Robles Zinfandel Festival and Wine Country Auction by visiting www.pasowine.com or calling 1-800-549-WINE (9463).

With its spectacular sculpture gardens featuring larger-than-life bronze and granite works that include a prancing horse and a prowling feline, the Sculpterra Winery Tasting Room quickly grabbed attention in the Paso Robles wine region. “We wanted to bring something new to the area by combining outdoor art and the vineyard,” said Paul Frankel, the assistant winemaker and son of owner Dr. Warren Frankel. Although the winery is only a year old, the Frankel family has owned the gorgeous 90-acre ranch in the Linne Valley east of Paso Robles for nearly 30 years. A pistachio orchard was planted before the vineyards, and bowls of the estate-grown nuts are on the tasting room’s attractive stained concrete bar. The warmly-decorated tasting room, featuring a number of miniature sculptures that are each for sale, was once a welding shop itself. African mahogany double doors provide access to the barrel room, while there is plenty of wood and stone throughout the room. Large windows provide glimpses of an outdoor picnic area, which includes a 10-ton granite sculpture of a stalking cat. While the sculpture gardens are worthy of a visit by themselves, Sculpterra’s wines are also turning heads. Cabernet Sauvignon is its flagship varietal, said the younger Frankel, with both the 2005 and 2006 vintages capturing gold medals. Besides the Cabernet Sauvignon, the estate vineyards include plantings of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Mouvedre, Petite Sirah and Viognier. Winemaker Shannon O’Neill has also crafted a pair of awardwinning red blends, “Statuesque” and “Maquette,” a French word which translated means “little statue.” The Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden is at 5125 Linne Road just east of Paso Robles. The tasting room is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter. More information is available by calling 1-888-302-8881, or visit the winery’s website at www.sculpterra.com.

Silver Wines are Pure Gold By Mark Storer

enjamin Silver’s wines are a bit of a revelation. In a fastpaced, enjoy-now, don’twait society, Silver’s wines are made for the long haul and he likes it that way. “I like age on my wines,” says Silver. “I try to put some age on them and it’s neat to see them get better and better.” Getting better is what Silver’s wines have been doing since he began making them. With a still small 1800-case annual production, Silver focuses on quality, hand-crafted, vineyard-select wines. “I’m working with a lot of new fruit sources now and it’s working out pretty well,” Silver says. Sourcing Pinot Noir from Kevin Merrills’s Premiere Vineyard and Grenache Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon from Fess Parker’s Camp 4 among others, Silver is convinced that his fruit sources are better than ever. Among one of his greatest triumphs of late, though, is getting his wines into his home state of Massachusetts. Born and
raised in the Bay State and originally harboring a desire to be a veterinarian, Silver got the wine bug early and headed west to California. “I sent some of our ’04 Pinot Noir and Mourvedre-Syrah blend to my brother in Rhode Island and he took them to a restaurant up in Boston called L’espalier. They tried them and contacted their distributor who contacted me and I’ve got a presence there, now,” says Silver. “That was a lot of fun.” The distributor in Massachusetts was so impressed with Silver’s wine that he pre-sold a lot of the wine before he ordered it. This year’s harvest was a bit smaller than most, but Silver says there are bright spots. “The Sangiovese I got from Tepesque Vineyard in northern Santa Barbara County is really something,” says Silver. “It’s a very high quality vintage. “Benjamin’s wines always sell out when I have them,” says Don O’Neill owner of Wine Country wine shop in Los Olivos. “He’s a fine winemaker and he’s good at
what he does,” he added. Silver has known O’Neill since 1994 when the two worked at Zaca Mesa together. “I try to make some of my library wines available to him,” says Silver. “He really does move wine over there when they get a lot of people in.” Recently moving all of his production to Santa Barbara in a smaller and independent facility, Silver has put a lot of effort into getting his wines more widely known. Silver Wines are even available in Japan, both British Columbia and Alberta as well as California, and parts of the East Coast. Matt Kramer wrote of Silver in 2003, “…Ben Silver is going to be heard about, just you watch.” That time has evidently come and

It is clear that Paso Robles residents are excited about the race stopping here, so we have put together this website to provide current information. We have included information about the route, volunteer and sponsorship opportunities, and hospitality information for visitors coming in from out of town to watch the race in Paso Robles,” said Chief of Police Lisa Solomon, Chairperson of Local Organizing Committee (LOC). “The website will be the best place to find updates about the Amgen Tour of California as information becomes available. And as the race gets closer, we will list the best places to watch the race come through Paso Robles and any local advisories. There is also the option to sign up for email updates to receive any local news pertaining to the race.” “The Paso Robles Amgen Tour of California website is a great way for us to thank our sponsors for their generous support of this event. The Amgen Tour of California is the only existing event of this magnitude in the United States and will be invaluable in promoting Paso Robles as a tourist destination to a worldwide audience,” states Cathy David with the City of Paso Robles Tourism Department and Sponsorship Director of the LOC. “Our local sponsors are to be commended for recognizing this amazing opportunity. Through their sponsorship, the Amgen Tour of California has become a reality for the City of Paso Robles.” To access the website, go to www.prcity.com and click on the Amgen Tour of California link. On the site you will find information about the race, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, ancillary events, the Lifestyle Festival that travels with the Amgen Tour of California and race day. “We plan to update the route section of the website as soon as information becomes available from the organizer of the race,” states Freda Berman, Technical Director for the LOC. “The complete route is expected to be announced later this year, so fans should be sure to check the website frequently.”

Amgen Tour of California website Launched for Paso Robles

Already considered cycling’s most important and successful road race in the United States, the 2009 Amgen Tour of California will be expanded to cover more than 800 miles over nine days. The event’s fourth running is scheduled for February 14-22. Traveling almost the entire length of California, the race will begin in the state’s capital, Sacramento, and end in San Diego County for the first time. In preparation for the highly anticipated return of the Amgen Tour of California professional cycling road race in February, a specially developed classroom curriculum has been developed for fourththrough sixth-grade students. The educational handbook will be distributed to schools in the 16 California cities that will host the 2009 Amgen Tour of California. Through interactive lessons, the 2009 educational handbook will teach students about the history of cycling and includes bike safety and maintenance tips. Provided to more than 60,000 students, the booklet also provides information about the State of California, including targeted lesson plans that use cycling as a means to teach core subjects. Classroom activities, such as weather charting and word searches, allow educators to reach students with engaging material developed specifically to supplement the curriculum of students in grades four through six. The handbook also includes a lesson on world geography, as it relates to cyclists that have participated in the race, math, science and a cycling glossary to help students better understand the intricacies of professional cycling. Dates of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California: Prologue: Saturday, Feb. 14 – Sacramento Stage 1: Sunday, Feb. 15 – Davis to Santa Rosa Stage 2: Monday, Feb. 16 – Sausalito to Santa Cruz Stage 3: Tuesday, Feb. 17 – San Jose to Modesto Stage 4: Wednesday, Feb. 18 – Merced to Clovis Stage 5: Thursday, Feb. 19 – Visalia to Paso Robles Stage 6: Friday, Feb. 20 – Solvang (individual time trial) Stage 7: Saturday, Feb. 21 – Santa Clarita to Pasadena Stage 8: Sunday, Feb. 22 – Rancho Bernardo to Escondido

Cantara Cellars is a local winery producing a broad selection of award-winning red and white wines right here in Ventura County. Grapes were sourced from the Lodi appellation in Northern California to produce premium wines. Cantara Cellars began as a small winemaking hobby in the garage of Mike and Chris Brown’s Moorpark home. With their home located in the “Cantara” section of the Serenata development it only seemed fitting to name the garage-sized winery “Cantara Cellars.” Beginning with 250 pounds of Chardonnay hand harvested from Mike’s parents’ vineyards in Lodi, California, they fermented their first 18 gallons of wine.
