Introduction

Safety and SecurityEveryone’s Concern

Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology (LWIT) is an integral part of the community it serves. As such, LWIT shares many of the same interests and problems, including a concern about crime. The Institute experiences many of the same risks and threats as the community in which it is located. We are vitally concerned about the safety and well being of our students, faculty, staff, and all visitors who participate in the many activities which we sponsor.

At one time schools were thought to be a safe haven. We all know that crime has found its way through the school doors.

Although criminal acts of safety concern at the Institute have been minimal, everyone should be aware of potential problems. We encourage you to join the effort to continue the Institute’s reputation of being a safe and secure environment for everyone.

In dealing with on-campus crime, students, faculty, support staff, and administrators need to be aware of how to prevent a criminal act from occurring and how to deal with it if it happens.

This brochure provides security measures and any crime statistics compiled for periods prior to 1992 and the past three years. Also campus security awareness topics will be addressed during orientation sessions every semester and periodically by instructors.

1. Everyone needs to be aware of the fact that a crime can occur at any time and at any place. 2. Vehicles left unattended in the parking lot should be locked. 3. Persons who appear to be non-students or acting in a suspicious or capricious manner should be reported to the Principal’s office. 4. Persons using the parking areas at night should stay in the lighted areas and try to go to the parking area with other people. 5. Do not leave valuables unattended. Bring as few valuable items as possible to the Institute. 6. Personal items should be labeled or marked with a name or some other identifying mark.

Campus Safety & Security Policies and Procedures It is the policy of LWIT that all reasonable measures shall be taken to protect students, employees, and visitors. It is expected that all faculty, staff, and students will act in a safe manner and report any unsafe condition or dangerous situation. The Institute will not tolerate any type of disruptive or inappropriate behavior that interferes with the primary education mission and sponsors programs to encourage awareness of safety and security hazards. LWIT complies with state and federal laws, which prohibit the sale, use or possession of alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs or weapons on campus. We cooperate fully with authorities in the enforcement of civil laws. LWIT is recognized as a “Drug-Free Zone.”

Criminal acts such as murder, rape, forcible and non-forcible sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft or damage, arrests for liquor-law, drug abuse and weapons violations are occurring in schools at an alarming rate.

Guidelines for Crime Prevention:

Guidelines if a Criminal Act Occurs: 1. If you observe or are the victim of a crime, you should report it immediately to the Principal’s office. 2. Try to provide the office person with details about the actual crime, the criminal and as many other details as are pertinent to the incident.

3. The office person receiving the report of a crime shall immediately notify the Law Enforcement unit that a crime has occurred. 4. The Law Enforcement unit, after determining that a crime has occurred, will notify the proper law enforcement authorities as well as the proper District personnel. 5. A school incident report will be filed with the Law Enforcement unit and the School District. If you witness a crime or are a victim please be prepared to provide the following information: Your name Quick description of any injury The location of the incident you are reporting A description of the scene A description of any possible suspects A description of the vehicles involved (if any) and a license number Any evidence relating to the crime. Guidance counselors will be available to provide students information on counseling services for victims of sex offenses and other crimes. Become an involved and alert student. Your ideas, comments, and contributions to our safety and security efforts are encouraged and welcomed. Remember, we are always looking for ways to ensure that our Institute is a safe, secure, and healthy place to work and study. We challenge you to make this a personal objective while here.

Campus Disciplinary Action Students who are accused of committing campus crimes will be provided due process. The Florida Administrative Code and the Code of Conduct adopted by the Collier County School Board will be followed in determining disciplinary action. A copy of the Code of Conduct is maintained in the Principal’s office for review by staff and students on request.
