Spiritual & Physical Doctors Saint Cosman
They were from one of the Arab countries, their mother tough them the right Christian faith after their father passed away. They studied medicine and treated the sick and poor for free. When Diocletian renounced the faith and ordered the worship of idols, he was told that Cosman and Damian were preaching in the Name of Christ and urging others not to worship idols. He asked them to worship the idols and when they refused he tortured them and their brothers and mother. After the governor became weary of torturing them he ordered their heads to be cut off. They then received the crown of life in the kingdom of heaven.
Saint Damien
She was brought up in the 3rd century in Upper Egypt in a noble Christian family, who handed her over to Bishop Sherimon, Bishop of Beni Suef, who in turn taught her and baptized her as a Christian. As she grew up she went and lived in a cave in the desert. As a hermit, Verena fasted and prayed continuously. Saint Verena was particularly concerned over young girls and used to look after them spiritually and physically, due to her expertise as a nurse. As a result of her fame, the local governor arrested her and sent her to jail, where Saint Maurice appeared to her to console and strengthen her. She was released from jail, and continued to perform miracles. Due to her, many converted to Christianity. Saint Verena was interested in serving the poor and used to offer them food. Moreover, she enjoyed serving the sick, especially those suffering from leprosy. She used to wash their wounds and put ointments on them, not fearing infection.
Saint Luke
St. Luke the Evangelist and physician. He was one of the 70 disciples mentioned in the tenth chapter of his gospel. He accompanied the Apostles Peter and Paul and wrote their account. He was martyred, by the hand of Emperor Nero. His body was placed in a sack and cast it in the sea. By God's will, the waves of the sea brought it to an island. A believer found it, took it and buried it with great honour. Saint Luke wrote the Gospel bearing his name and the "Acts of the Apostles" addressing his words to his disciple Theophilus who was a Gentile.

INITIAL CONSULTATION
Good Health
The Word of God, through the Holy Bible, nourishes our soul, gives us guidance and helps maintain a healthy Christian life. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness…” (2 Timothy 3:16) The purpose of the Bible is to invite us into a complete life in God. As Christians we recognise the sacred nature of the Holy Bible, through our faith. This is what gives us the ability to stay strong and healthy in our spiritual life.
“My soul clings to the dust; Revive me according to Your word.“ (Psalm 119:25) The Word of God revives us when we are being choked by sin. “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.” (Proverbs 30:5) The Holy Scripture will protect your soul from any harm. Put your trust in God and you will be shielded from impurities. “For I will restore health to you And heal you of your wounds,' says the Lord…” (Jeremiah 30:17) God wants us to always be of good health. When we are wounded through sin He will heal us and restore our soul back to purity. “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” (John 15:4) The Bible connects us with Him, Who carried us into the arms of the Father. It saves us from our human nature, and sanctifies and renews us with His Holy Spirit and by His Blood on the cross.
INITIAL CONSULTATION
“You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.” (Deuteronomy 4:2) The Holy Scriptures are not just commandments, but divine promises that empower us. The Bible is not only for us to study, but to experience, to live and to worship by it.
“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding…” (Proverbs 3:13) Read the bible with compassion and modesty, because God resists the proud but gives understanding to the humble. “Wisdom is better than weapons of war; But one sinner destroys much good." (Ecclesiastes 9:18) Get a notebook and summarise what you read, your thoughts, the verses you like, and don't forget to memorise at least one verse every day, to keep for yourself a treasure or weapon that may save you in times of trouble. continued on page 8...

...continued from page 7
“Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) It is your own personal book, so study it in light of your own life and your relationship with God. Whatever is found in it, whether it is promises, or commandments are for you. Underline verses that contain promises so you can concentrate on them in prayers.
INITIAL CONSULTATION
“Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24) Through the bible’s teachings, you can enjoy the personal love of God and feel that it is your own private book, sent to you personally from God, as a living member in the holy community.

REHAB SESSION ONE
Paralytic Man - Sin no more
10
After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralysed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, "Do you want to be made well?" The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred
up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me." Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your bed and walk." And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked. And that day was the Sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed." He answered them, "He who made me well said to me, 'Take up your bed and walk.'" Then they asked him, "Who is the Man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?" But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you." (John 5:1-14)
Food for Thought
You will notice that when Christ healed the man, He didn’t just say “Rise” and stopped. He actually gave the man some instructions: A) Carry your bed. The bed represents those who have taken care of us – the bed carried him for 38 years. Now it was his time to carry the bed. We must also carry those who helped us through our lives when the time comes. B) And Walk Walking here represents taking action. Simply put – GET UP AND SERVE!!!
Discussion Questions
REHAB SESSION ONE
The early church fathers have researched the use of numbers in the Bible. We have all grown up knowing some numbers are considered holy or perfect numbers. For example: 3 represents the Trinity. But did you know that the number 2 represents love? Why? To love, you need someone to love. Hence a loving relationship must involve 2 people. Also 40 is considered a complete number as it is 10 X 4 – 10 represents the world and 4 is the Gospels (Word of God) which made its way to all corners of the world. So the paralytic man was sick for 38 years – which is 40 less 2. The early church fathers tell us that God was trying to show that the only thing stopping the man from having a complete or happy life (40) was that he had no love (2) in his life. God is telling us that without love we become paralysed – spiritually, emotionally, socially, intellectually and even physically. We stop functioning as normal human beings. Remember that GOD IS LOVE. We are created in the Image and Likeness of God so we MUST be love as well. Hence if we cease to have love in our lives we cease to function as we were designed.
1. Consider the scene that Christ came upon at the Pool. Sick and desperate people waiting for the movement of the water in the hope they will be the first in after the water is agitated. In among these is a man who has been there 38 long years – completely abandoned by everyone with very little chance of being first in but amazingly, he still had hope and stuck it out. Discuss the importance of the attitude we have when we are faced with problems in our lives. Does our attitude have any bearing on our ability to come to a solution?

2. Christ did something very strange – He actually asked the man “Do you want to be made well?” Discuss the following: a) Christ never asks a silly question so this leads us to understand there are people who are sick and don’t want to be healed. Why is this? What reasons would make a person favour their illness over being made well?
_____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________
NOTES
b) Sometimes we are paralysed by illness at various levels – spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social and physical. Discuss examples of how our behaviour leads to illness at all these levels.
12
_____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ _____________________________________ 3. In order to be healed, this man was asked to do the impossible. How would you react if you were in this man’s position (paralysed for 38 years) and Christ asks you to RISE and WALK? Would you have obeyed?

SECOND OPINION 14
What Makes You Sick
The body is a slave, the soul a sovereign, and therefore it is due to Divine mercy when the body is worn out by illness: for thereby the passions are weakened, and a man comes to himself; indeed, bodily illness itself is sometimes caused by the passions. The soul that is given over to the will of God fears nothing; neither thunder nor thieves nor any such thing. Whatever may come, 'Such is God's pleasure,' she says. If she falls sick she thinks, 'This means that I need sickness, or God would not have sent it.'
Biblical Case Studies 1. Miriam - as punishment
Yes sometimes we can become sick as a punishment for sin. Miriam got leprosy because she spoke badly about Moses the Prophet.
2. Job – to strengthen our belief in God’s goodness
But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!" And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person." So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. (Job 1:11-12) Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord." In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong. (Job 1:21-22)
SECOND OPINION
And when the cloud departed from above the tabernacle, suddenly Miriam became leprous, as white as snow. Then Aaron turned toward Miriam, and there she was, a leper. So Aaron said to Moses, "Oh, my lord! Please do not lay this sin on us, in which we have done foolishly and in which we have sinned. (Num 12:1011)
Our relationship with God will be at its strongest when we can thank Him and worship Him even in the middle of what appears to be an unfair illness. Job was the greatest example of this – in fact he thought that as our Creator, God had every right to do whatever He wanted – if that meant allowing us to fall ill then it's His right as God. This is the highest form of trust in God.
3. Simon’s mother-in-law & many others – just because!
Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon's house. But Simon's wife's mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her. So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them. When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. (Luke 4:38-40)
15
There are times when we get sick just because!! Since the fall of Adam and Eve, sin entered the human body and as a result so did weakness for all generations thereafter. Hence exposure to bacteria and virus' makes us sick. It's a fact!!!
4. Man born blind – to show the Glory of God
SECOND OPINION
Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. (John 9: 1-3) One of the best ways that God reveals His glory is by working through us – this takes many forms. It could be through miracles, through outstanding talent or as in the case of the man born blind – through illness. He was blind only so that the works of God could be revealed through him. WOW!!! You are truly blessed when God chooses you to reveal His work and glory.
5. Paul – to stop fall of pride
And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10) St Paul had been allowed to have special visions from our Lord Jesus Christ. Obviously this kind of blessing can easily turn into pride and a big head. Hence St Paul himself says – so that he doesn't become full of himself, an illness was given to him to keep him grounded. Sometimes it is a blessing to receive such an illness rather than suffer from pride.
6. Woman with blood flow – as a test of faith
Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction." (Mark 5:25-26, 34)
16
The only way we know if we have faith or courage or strength etc is if we are put in situations to test it. It is the only way to really get to know ourselves. Christ commended this woman because she endured much and didn't give up hope – in fact her faith only became stronger and more determined… hoping we all

REHAB SESSION TWO
While a wound is still new and warm, it is easy to heal. Old wounds, carelessly left to fester are not easily healed, but require much effort… The later the repentance, the more arduous it becomes.
18
“It is not good for all our wishes to be filled; through sickness we recognize the value of health; through evil, the value of good; through hunger, the value of food; through exertion, the value of rest.” “Falling ill is not something that happens to us, it is a choice we make as a result of things happening to us” “A wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings, and learn how by his own thought to derive benefit from his illnesses.”
Skit Preparation In your group: 1. Read the story of the Biblical character you have been assigned. 2. Discuss the reason why this person was made ill (refer to the Case Studies in your Patient Notes for assistance). 3. Prepare a 10 minute skit to present to the rest of your fellow patients in Heaven’s Hospital.

Trials are medicines which our gracious and wise Physician prescribes because we need them; and he proportions the frequency and weight of them to what the case requires. Let us trust his skill and thank him for his prescription. - Isaac Newton
Sickness helps to remind men of death. Sickness helps to make men think seriously of God, and their souls, and the world to come. Sickness helps to soften men's hearts, and teach them wisdom. Sickness helps to level and humble us. Sickness helps to try men's religion, of what sort it is. The storms of winter often bring out the defects in a man's dwelling, and sickness often exposes the gracelessness of a man's soul. Surely anything that makes us find out the real character of our faith is a good.

Some Bible Verses Exodus 15:26 - "If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you." Psalms 30:2 - “O LORD my God, I cried out to You, And You healed me.“
Isaiah 53:5 - “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. “ Jeremiah 30:17 - “For I will restore health to you And heal you of your wounds,' says the LORD.” Malachi 4:2 - “But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings.” Matthew 9:35 - “Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.”
FINAL DIAGNOSIS
Psalms 6:2 - “Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am weak; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled.”
Luke 6:19 - “And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.“ James 5:14-16 - “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

When God Heals When God comes to heal us It's final and complete There is nothing that is lacking When He meets us in our need

Healed & Whole One day I dug a little hole And put my hurt inside I thought that I could just forget I'd put it there to hide. But that little hurt began to grow I covered it every day I couldn't leave it and go on It seemed the price I had to pay. My joy was gone, my heart was sad Pain was all I knew. My wounded soul enveloped me Loving seemed too hard to do. One day, while standing by my hole I cried to God above And said, "If You are really there -They say, You're a God of Love!" And just like that -- He was right there And just put His arms around me He wiped my tears, His hurting child There was no safer place to be. I told Him all about my hurt I opened up my heart He listened to each and every word To every sordid part. I dug down deep and got my hurt I brushed the dirt away And placed it in the Master's hand And healing came that day. He took the blackness of my soul And set my spirit FREE! Something beautiful began to grow Where the hurt used to be. And when I look at what has grown Out of my tears and pain I remember every day to give my hurts to Him And never bury them again.
