Differentiation is not assigning more work to some students and less to others. Differentiation is assigning the same amount of work to students, but tiering the assignments. In the film watched in class, all of the students in the classroom were working on reading comprehension, but different groups were learning it in different ways. Some children were reading aloud, some children were at a listening station and some were working with the teacher. A learning contract is used to more clearly outline the task at hand. They are arranged so that students can organize the assignment based on what they want to learn from the assignment and how they wish to obtain the answers. The lessons have the same objectives and content are the same, but the process and results may vary depending on the students’ readiness. In the text there was an example of a teacher who continuously assessed her students to figure out their interests and readiness so that they could all excel in the classroom. Anchor activities are not busy work because they can supplement the lessons being taught.
