Spoken Word Poetry Competition
Mechanics Theme: Love and Heartbreaks with a twist of Moral Consciousness about Social and Moral Problems (Extrajudicial Killings, Early Pregnancy, Drugs etc.)
MECHANICS/GUIDELINES: 1. SPOKEN POETRY is a performance art that is word based. It is a writing that is meant to be spoken or delivered with emotions to an audience. It is an oral art that focuses on the aesthetics of word play, rhythm, improvisation, rhymes, intonation and voice inflection 2. The spoken poetry must be an original composition. It could be written in Filipino. (The use of Taglish is not allowed). 3. The piece must be related to the theme. 4. Each contestant is given a maximum of 3 to 5 minutes to recite or deliver his/her piece. No deduction shall be made if the contestant finishes the delivery in less than the maximum timeframe. 5. The spoken poetry must delivered from memory and any movement is confined onstage. 6. Attire appropriate for the spoken piece should be worn during the contest. 7. Sounds, instrumental or musical background are allowed to complement the delivery. No deduction shall be made if the contestant opts not to have a musical background. 8. Prizes at stake. The first, second, and third placers shall receive a certificate of recognition. Certificates of participation shall be given to all contestants and their coaches. 9. . The contestants will be judged using the following criteria: a. Message/ Content 40% The content of the spoken piece is relevant and related to education. The piece has a powerful and meaningful message to the audience b. Delivery and Performance 30% The spoken piece was delivered from the heart. Connection to the audience was established from the start. Facial expressions, hand and body gestures emphasized the different elements of the performance. Eye contact pulled the audience to the message of the spoken words. Audience’s attention and interest were captured and sustained throughout the delivery. Enunciation is clear. Audience can understand what is being spoken. Words are pronounced distinctly and correctly. Does not stutter nor stammer.
Pronunciation and intonation sound natural. c. Memorization 10% The piece was effectively recited from memory. Freestyle or improvisation was spontaneous even if a word or line was forgotten. d. Voice Variation and Projection 15% Voice is modulated, compelling and phrasing is fluent. Spoke loudly and clearly enough for listeners to hear and understand. Voice projects confidence and conviction. e. Attire 5% Attire complements the contestant’s spoken piece TOTAL -------------------> 100
