Meeting Cost-Effective, Strict SLA Requirements

Implementing Nationwide Rollouts Creatively

Lowering Network Maintenance Costs

The Problem:

This customer serves more than 2.5 million people from 80 locations. Providing these services requires an extensive data network among its many facilities. With nearly 2,500 devices in the data network, they needed a cost effective solution for meeting strict SLAs, while managing network growth and migration.

The project manager for a chain of nursing homes was tasked with rolling out Wi-Fi at all their locations. The required scope of work included a site survey, cabling, and then implementation of the wireless access points. The cost to complete the implementation using this methodology averaged $7,500 per site.

In 2002, this customer was faced with an expensive upgrade of its global voice/data multiplexers located in Michigan, Mexico, Argentina, and Austria. If they chose not to perform the upgrade, then the manufacturer would no longer provide maintenance support for this critical network.

The Solution: To meet the SLA requirements, Peter developed a customized alternative to the manufacturer’s standard maintenance program. Base support included a contract with the manufacturer for remote technical support and software updates for currently supported equipment. No additional support was purchased for the 1,000+ devices no longer supported by the manufacturer. Rather, given the geographic concentration of the equipment, providing on-site spare parts proved financially beneficial by significantly reducing costs, and resulting in a 50% reduction in restoral time. Dedicated technical support staff rounded out the service program. Peter’s solution resulted in a savings to the customer of more than $500,000 per year.

The Solution: With significant experience in all aspects of nationwide rollouts, NDI has learned that a site survey is not always needed. With the right implementation team, all required activities can be completed in one visit, with rare revisits to sites with significant site preparation requirements. NDI assembled a site team with all the necessary skills to handle the wireless survey and implementation, as well as any required cabling. Using this methodology, Peter could offer a “single visit” solution at an average cost of $4,500 per site. With 200 locations, the client saved $600,000 over the course of the rollout thanks to Peter’s creative solution.

The Solution: Peter worked with the client to develop an alternative support program to provide a 24x365 global network support through Network Dynamics. With this plan, NDI provides spare parts and trained engineers within 4 hours of each global location and has consistently met contracted SLAs since the inception of service. By offering this alternative, Peter helped the customer save approximately $300,000 per year on their network maintenance. Additionally, the client avoided several hundred thousand dollars in upgrade costs from the manufacturer.
