The Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol(IP). It is a "network of networks” that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such aselectronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of theWorld Wide Web. ..\COMMUNICATION\history.ppt The shared global computing network. A network based on standards including Internet Protocol (IP),Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and the Domain Name System (DNS), which enables global communications between all connected computing devices. It provides the platform for web services and the Worldwide Web.

The network gained a public face in the 1990s. By 1996 usage of the word "Internet" had become commonplace, and consequently, so had its misusage as a reference to the World Wide Web. Meanwhile, over the course of the decade, the Internet successfully accommodated the majority of previously existing public computer networks (although some networks, such as FidoNet, have remained separate) During the 1990s, it was estimated that the Internet grew by 100% per year, with a brief period of explosive growth in 1996 and 1997. This growth is often attributed to the lack of central administration, which allows organic growth of the network, as well as the non-proprietary open nature of the Internet protocols, which encourages vendor interoperability and prevents any one company from exerting too much control over the network. As of June 10, 2007, 1.133 billion people use the Internet according to Internet World Stats

The Internet is allowing greater flexibility in working hours and location, especially with the unmetered highspeed connections & Web applications.

The Internet can now be accessed virtually anywhere by numerous means. Mobile phones, datacards, handheld game consoles and cellular routers allow users to connect to the Internet from anywhere there is a cellular network supporting that device's technology.

The prevalent language for communication on the Internet is English. This may be a result of the Internet's origins, as well as English's role as the lingua franca. It may also be related to the poor capability of early computers, largely originating in the United States, to handle characters other than those in the English variant of the Latin alphabet.

There have been many analyses of the Internet and its structure. For example, it has been determined that the Internet IP routing structure and hypertext links of the World Wide Web are examples of scale-free networks.Similar to the way the commercial Internet providers connect via Internet exchange points, research networks tend to interconnect into large subnetworks such as: GEANT GLORIAD The Internet2 Network (formally known as the Abilene Network) JANET (the UK's national research and education network) These in turn are built around relatively smaller networks. See also the list of academic computer network organizations. In network diagrams, the Internet is often represented by a cloud symbol, into and out of which network communications can pass.

Five major uses for blogs in Education  Teachers

use blogs to replace the standard class Web page  Instructors begin to link to Internet items that relate to their course.  Blogs are used to organize in-class discussions  Some instructors are using blogs to organize class seminars and to provide summaries of readings.  Students may be asked to write their own blogs as part of their course grade.

A  Web  site  is  a  related  collection  of  World  Wide  Web  (WWW)  files  that  includes  a  beginning  file  called  a  home page.  A  company  or  an  individual  tells  you  how  to  get  to  their  Web  site  by  giving  you  the  address of their home page. From the home  page, you can get to all the other pages on  their  site.  Since  site  implies  a  geographic  place,  a  Web  site  can  be  confused  with  a  Web  server.  A  server  is  a  computer  that  holds the files for one or more sites. A very  large  Web  site  may  be  spread  over  a  number  of  servers  in  different  geographic  locations.  You  can  have  multiple  Web  sites  that  cross-link  to  files  on  each  others'  sites  or even share the same files.

NECESSITIES OF WEBSITE         An  ecommerce  web  site  is  the  main  tool  that  internet-based  businesses  use  to  advertise,  their  products  and  services,  to  make  their  sales  presentation,  to  close  sales,  and  to  process  orders  and  payments.  Every  internet-based  business  doesn't  necessarily  need  an  ecommerce  web  site.  Whether  or  not  an  ecommerce  web  site  is  needed  really  depends  upon  the  type  of  business  and  the  purpose of the website.    To decide what type of website you need for your  internet business, it is useful to learn about the most  common  types  of  websites  and  their  purposes.  A  very  basic  website,  sometimes  called  a  static  website,  is  primarily  used  for  advertising  or  lead  generation  purposes.  A  static  website  or  lead  generation  website  is  a  website  that  aims  to  generate  business  leads  and  this  type  of  website  is  commonly  used  by  service  companies  and  professionals  who  wish  to  provide  an  overview  of  their  business  to  attract  interest  from  potential  customers.       This  type  of  website,  using  techniques  such  as  offering free newsletters, is very good for generating  leads  as  well  as  building  an  opt-in  list  of  potential  clients  and  their  contact  information.  Building  an  opt-in  list  is  very  useful  for  email  marketing,  direct  mail marketing, and even telemarketing. Sometimes  an  ecommerce  web  site  also  serves  as  a  lead  generator as well as a sales tool.

Disadvantages •It  may  be  difficult  for  researchers  to  locate,  especially if there are many similar sites.  •Because  it  is  not  “published”  or  authorized  by  a  reputable  source,  the  site  may  be  disregarded as inaccurate.  •The  information  on  the  site  may  not  be  reliable.  •Information  may  be  interpreted  incorrectly  or used inappropriately.  •A connection to the web is needed to access  the  information,  which  will  be  impossible  if  a  computer and connection is not available.  •It  may  be  difficult  to  reach  your  target  audience.  •Because  the  author  is  not  present  when  others  are  retrieving  information  there  is  no  opportunity  to  ask  questions  or  have  things  explained in greater detail etc.  •The site may go down or the computer may  crash.  •Site may be difficult to use if experience with  the internet is limited.

Ecommerce means - Doing business online, typically via the Web. It is also called ‘e-business,’ ‘etailing’ and ‘I-commerce’. Although in most cases ecommerce and e-business are synonymous, ecommerce implies that goods and services can be purchased online, whereas e-business might be used as more of an umbrella term for a total presence on the Web, which would naturally include the ecommerce (shopping) component. E-commerce may also refer to electronic data interchange (EDI), in which one company's computer queries and transmits purchase orders to another company's computer. See m-commerce, micro commerce and clicks and mortar. In 1886, a telegraph operator was able to obtain a shipment of watches that was refused by the local jeweler. Using the telegraph, he sold all the watches to fellow operators and railroad employees. Within a few months, he made enough money to quit his job and start his own store. The young man's name was Richard Sears. His company later became Sears, Roebuck.

“As the business world globalizes and the internet grows, we will start to see a seamless digital workplace”, says Nicholas Negro Ponte. Electronic Mail involves sending Messages via telecommunication links. It is commonly defined as person to person communication in which the transmission and the receipt of the message takes place through a computer. Electronic mail can be used to Distribute memos, reports and documents without sending them through the mail room. With electronic mail, the Sender keys in a message and sends it to an electronic mail box, receivers are notified that a message awaits them and they respond to the sender as soon as the message is read. When it is delivered and read quickly Electronic mail can be almost as convenient and articulate as a personal conversation.

CONCLUSION Though, Internet can also create havoc, destruction and its misuse can be very fatal, the advantages of it outweigh its disadvantages.
