FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

TODAY’S FOCUS – First Sunday of Lent: This first Sunday of Lent calls us to enter the desert with Jesus. SEASON OF LENT Ash Wednesday Feb. 25th — Holy Saturday March 11th Liturgically, Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and ends on Thursday of Holy Week when the Holy Triduum begins. The Holy Triduum includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Lent is for us a time of renewal, conversion, penance and reparation. Christian penance traditionally involves prayer, fasting, and works of charity. In our times it may be appropriate, even necessary, in many instances to put less emphasis on fasting and more on penance which includes prayer, receiving the sacraments and in doing charitable works. But the witness of Scripture and the life of the Church will not let us abandon corporal penances. Fasting and abstinence are encouraged in Lent. LENTEN REGULATIONS—FAST AND ABSTINENCE The fifth precept of the Church binds Catholics to observe the prescribed days of fast and abstinence. This is intended to establish the minimum response of a faithful Catholic to the Lord’s call to repentance, conversion and penance. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of Fast. Catholics who are 18 years old but not yet 59 are obliged to Fast, that is take only one full meal and two lesser meals, with nothing to eat between meals. Drinking fluids would not be contrary to the practice of fasting. Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are the days of Abstinence. All Catholics who are 14 years old and older are obliged to abstain from eating meat. Catholics have a serious obligation to join together in the common observance of the above days of fast and abstinence. No one should be scrupulous in this regard, but neither should they excuse themselves for any light reason. People who are not able to practice bodily penance, perhaps due to pregnancy, illness or having to do hard physical labor should choose a different work of penance or of charity. It would be ideal if works of penance were linked to works of charity, for example, if the money saved by eating less or less expensive meals would be given in charity to feed the poor. ***All the Fridays of the year are days of penance, in commemoration of the Lord’s Passion, but they are not necessarily days of fast and abstinence. On these days it is left to the choice of each individual Catholic to practice some work of penance—which could be fasting or abstaining from meat—or a work of charity. On Ash Wednesday, the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday, however, Catholics are obliged to practice fasting and/or abstaining specifically.***

St. Mary's Colgan High School resurrected the Scholar's Bowl team for the 2008-2009 school year. This would not have happened without the initiative of coaches Bev Mitchelson and Bev Pommier. This year’s team was successful, taking 2nd in the CNC League, third in Regionals and qualifying for State. We would like to congratulate all of the members of our scholars bowl team and recognize especially the leadership of Seniors Erin Farmer and Sara Verga, and Juniors Andrew O'Malley, Anthony Ison, Katy Spence, and Maggie Stuckey. Go Panthers!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant in Christ. But eh bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of baptism...that people place their gifts, their resources — their selves — at God’s service in the through the Church.” VOCATION PRAYER With Mary, mother of the Church, let us pray for an increase of vocations. You can solve the need of vocations in the church through prayer and personal commitment.
