DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

TODAY’S FOCUS – Divine Mercy Sunday: Today is Divine Mercy Sunday, a day when we take special note of the wonder of God’s mercy in forgiving our sins and granting us reconciliation with himself. This is a relatively new solemnity, instituted by Pope John Paul in 2000. Today is a day to be especially grateful for God’s mercy and to demonstrate our gratitude by showing kindness to others. WHAT A GIFT! We at Our Lady of Lourdes Church have been truly blessed with the establishment of the Christ the King Adoration Chapel. In these uncertain times one hour of prayer is of immense benefit to ourselves, our families, our parish, and our world. Please consider committing to at least one hour a week as a precious expression of faith in Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The Chapel schedule can be found on the church website and on the table at the back of the church. Our goal is to have at least two adorerguardians for every hour. To reserve your hour for adoration fill out the form and place in the baskets at church, deliver to the rectory or call Christie Gill at 2310048. All adorers will be receiving an information packet before the chapel opens. The elementary teachers, students and staff would like to THANK YOU for saving the Ron’s receipts for the school. It has been a great success and because of you, we were able to collect $105,989.28 in receipts. With them we will be able to purchase several nice items for the students and teachers. We will let you know next fall if Ron’s will participate in this program again.

The SMC Fine Arts Committee will be hosting the 2nd Annual Elementary Art Show on April 19th after the 10:30 and 12:00 masses in the Elementary School. Come and view the art projects done by our talented Elementary School students. After the NOON Mass, the St. Mary’s Elementary/Junior High Band will play. Come support our music program and hear our band play. Both the Band and Orchestra will also have performances at PSU on Saturday.

The RCIA class of 2008-09 would like to thank the many ladies of the parish who provided delicious cookies for our weekly meetings. We also would like to thank the Altar Society for the lovely reception on Holy Saturday evening. We appreciate your attentiveness and your prayers. REFLECTIONS ON LIFE Commenting on Washington State voters’ approval of physician-assisted suicide, the State Medical Association voiced its opposition “because our training and experience in the practice of medicine directs us to heal and comfort, not to cause death.” NRL News, Nov-Dec., 2008 CEMETERY MOWING ST. MARY’S CEMETERY At Highland Park (St. Mary’s Cemetery is at the corner of Broadway and Centennial) Once again the season is upon us. Every other Wednesday starting at 5:00pm we trim the stones with weed eaters. (If you would like to come earlier than 5:00pm that is perfectly OK.) We invite anyone and everyone to help with the trimming — bring your weed eater if you have one — the parish has a number of weed eaters available for your use if you don’t have one. We are grateful to Ken Robertson for coordinating this parish ministry with the help of the Knights of Columbus. Our first mowing and trimming day will be this Wednesday, April 22nd. Any questions contact Ken Robertson at 232-2771.

8th Grade Recognition Planning There will be a short 8th grade parent meeting to plan for the 8th Grade Recognition reception and dance on Monday, May 4th at 3:10 p.m. in the high school library. If you are unable to attend, please contact Lisa Russell (232-7722) or Elizabeth Smith (232-6865).

ST. PAUL’S SOCIETY (WIDOWS & WIDOWERS) will not meet during the month of April, but will meet the 3rd Sunday of May, which will be May 17th. Hostesses will be Loyola Puckett, Harriet Rudiseill, Betty Schmitt and Margaret Johnson. Mass at 3:30 followed by a short business meeting, dinner and bingo. Please note that we will not be meeting in June or July. All members are encouraged to attend the May meeting, and newcomers are welcome.

FOOD PANTRY Wesley House, our local food pantry, for the second year in a row, has been given the opportunity to double any gifts of food or money donated to them during the months of March and April. Mr. Alan Feinstein, Cranston, RI, has announced that he will match any donation of food or money contributed to Wesley House; they will receive $1.00 for each pound item or dollar. If you wish to donate by check, please make it payable to Wesley House and have “Feinstein” on the memo line. For your information. ***Our parish has supported the Wesley House food pantry for years. It is a great way to centralize the distribution of food in our community. This eliminates the duplication of efforts. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Wichita subsidizes the salary of a full time social worker, Alberta, at Wesley House. This is just one of the ways the Catholic Church provides assistance to those in need in the Pittsburg area.

Please remember to name Our Lady of Lourdes or St. Mary’s Colgan Schools in your will. May we leave a legacy of faith and education for the generations to come. Please consider informing Fr. Tom or the parish office of your legacy plans, [email protected]
