PALM SUNDAY

TODAY’S FOCUS – Palm Sunday: Jesus freely chose to suffer and die so that our sins could be forgiven and we could be reconciled to the Father. The motivation our Lord had for doing this was his great love for us and his desire to be faithful to the will of his Father. By entering more deeply into our Lord’s Passion, we can come to experience more fully his great love for us. SCRIPTURE READINGS We need God’s Word each day. HOLY WEEK SERVICES Palm Sunday: (5th) Regular Sunday schedule with the distribution of palms for your homes and the reading of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Holy Thursday: (9th) 7:00pm Mass which includes the Washing of the Feet. This mass celebrates that night when Jesus Christ at the Jewish Passover Meal instituted the Sacrifice of the Mass. We will also receive the Holy Oils which were blessed by the Bishop at the Chrism mass in Wichita on Tuesday. Following the mass the Blessed Sacrament will be removed from the church commemorating the arrest of Jesus and His suffering, death, and burial on Friday and Saturday. Good Friday: (10th) Services are at 12:00 noon, 3:00pm (Spanish), and 7:00 pm. The service includes Scripture, the reading of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, veneration of the cross and communion. This is the only day of the year we do not celebrate mass. Holy Saturday (11th): The Easter Vigil begins at 8:30pm and is a beautiful Liturgy including the lighting of the Easter Fire, Scriptures telling the story of the Hebrew people in Old Testament times, blessing of the Easter water, baptizing those adults and receiving those by a profession of faith who have been preparing to come into the church. They will also receive the sacrament of confirmation and receive Holy Communion for the first time. Plan to attend any or all of the Services!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOLY THURSDAY — the washing of the feet. If you would like to represent the community by having your foot washed please contact the rectory. Eucharistic Ministers: if you would like to assist at any of the Holy Week services please contact the rectory.

PEW CUSHIONS The new pew cushions have been provided through the courtesy and generosity of Louie & Lillian Pontello, former members of our parish. Lillian died Dec. 30, 2000 at the age of 82 and Louie died May 17, 2008 at the age of 91. They were lifetime parishioners and Louie was an usher at 5:30pm mass for many, many years. Lillian had to bring a cushion to mass every Sunday so Louie said: “when I die I am donating a portion of my estate to the Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund and I want some of that money to be used for pew cushions.” He and Lillian would be pleased to know that we now have comfortable seats. Our job and responsibility is to take good care of the cushions — Please make every effort to treat them properly. And pray for Louie & Lillian and all who have contributed to the Memorial Fund through their estate.

FOOD PANTRY Wesley House, our local food pantry, for the second year in a row, has been given the opportunity to double any gifts of food or money donated to them during the months of March and April. Mr. Alan Feinstein, Cranston, RI, has announced that he will match any donation of food or money contributed to Wesley House; they will receive $1.00 for each pound item or dollar. If you wish to donate by check, please make it payable to Wesley House and have “Feinstein” on the memo line. For your information. ***Our parish has supported the Wesley House food pantry for years. It is a great way to centralize the distribution of food in our community. This eliminates the duplication of efforts. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Wichita subsidizes the salary of a full time social worker, Alberta, at Wesley House. This is just one of the ways the Catholic Church provides assistance to those in need in the Pittsburg area.

Please remember to name Our Lady of Lourdes or St. Mary’s Colgan Schools in your will. May we leave a legacy of faith and education for the generations to come. Please consider informing Fr. Tom or the parish office of your legacy plans, [email protected]
