The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:12

Next month’s articles are due Sunday, August 16! 2

Pastor Patrick’s Pen

“In many and various ways God spoke to the people of old by the prophets, but now in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son.” Hebrews 1:1-2 Dear Children of God, The Old Testament lessons this month focus our attention on four of the “major prophets” of the Old Testament. In light of this I have decided to devote my articles this year to the various prophets, and specifically the manner in which they directed the attention of God’s people to Christ. We begin with the most important of the prophets, Moses. In the lesson for the Ninth Sunday after Pentecost from Exodus 16:215, we see Moses faced with a group of grumbling Israelites. They were unhappy about the food that they were eating while on their pilgrimage. Their complaining reminds us of at least two very important things; the first being that like them, we also grumble and complain. Think of something that has been especially irritating to you, be it about another person or something in the church, that has caused you to grumble. Though we may feel justified in this, in truth it is sin. For our grumbling is ultimately against the Lord. This is what Moses makes clear in verse eight of the lesson. God gives us an alternative to grumbling—it is prayer and the study of His Word. When we are tempted to grumble we should faithfully seek guidance in His word, and take our complaints and concerns to God in prayer.

The Lord responded to the grumbling of His people by sending bread and quail from heaven (which, incidentally, they would also later grumble about). In grace He provided for their needs. This is a reminder of the providence of God, who provides us with all of our daily needs. But it also serves a much greater purpose, namely to point us to Christ, the Living Bread from heaven. Listen to part of the Gospel lesson for the first Sunday in August found in John 6: So they said to Him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Clearly, Jesus is greater than Moses. For He does not only give living bread—He IS the living bread. As John says in the first chapter of his Gospel, “The law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” So we give thanks for Moses, this greatest of the Old Testament prophets. Not only for his works but for the word which he spoke, and thus directed us to our savior Jesus Christ. Peace be with you, pastor

Dear PWC Family,

continued from page

What did I learn from the Higher Things SOLA trip? It’s hot, humid and muggy in San Antonio! The cockroaches are BIG! And we never know how any day will go! Plans we make may not always work out and there may be a lesson we need to learn. Does God or His Word promise any of us that we will always get what we want or that things will go the way we want them too? Nope – no promise of that. Maybe like Paul we need to learn to be content with the circumstances we find ourselves in. (Philippians ”, 4:11 - 13). Life is full of disappointments, “I wish I could have and “I wanted to ”; if we allow these disappointments to weigh us down then we lose our joy in life. If we can learn to “go with the flow”, “take things as they come” and grow from these experiences that come our way then we are better able to cope with each new situation that presents itself. Negativity has a way of spreading rapidly but being positive and cheerful also is contagious! As we face a time when we are disappointed by circumstances and events it helps to take a moment and think “is this really going to matter tomorrow? Next week? Next year? For eternity?” Probably not-what will matter is that Christ died for your sins and mine. We live because He freely died for us and is our Savior. He wants us to live joyfully and fully in His grace everyday no matter what the circumstances. That is one thing that I hope I learned in San Antonio. I again learned to trust in the Lord and know that He is in control of all things. I pray that all those able to attend the conference grew in their faith and will continue to remain faithful. I do know that we at PWC are blessed to have wonderful, faithful young adults in our midst. Please continue to pray for them, each other, our congregation, and the staff. I will continue to keep you and our congregation in my prayers. May God grant you a blessed and peace-filled day! In Christ, Marilyn

Reading from the Book of Concord We might be under the mistaken impression that after the Augsburg Confession, and the “split” with Rome, everyone lived “happily ever after”. That is certainly not the case. The “Lutherans” were attacked both from the outside, and from within. The Formula of Concord addresses some of the controversies that were dealt with in the years following the Augsburg Confession and Luther’s Death. For the next few months we will focus our reading on this document. We will begin on page 521 of “Concordia; The Lutheran Confessions” with the editor’s introduction. 1. What is the meaning of “antinomian”? What was the controversy? 2. What is the meaning of “Adiaphora”? How is this word misused or mis-applied in the Lutheran church today? 3. What is “Christ’s Righteousness”? Who were the two proponents of false teaching, and what exactly did they teach? 4. What is the right understanding of Christ’s Righteousness? 5. Why is this teaching so comforting to Christians?

Catechism Connection: Christian Questions with Their Answers Following the Table of Duties, which we reviewed last month, comes the wonderful section entitled “Christian Questions with Their Answers.” This is a terrific resource, especially in reference to helping us prepare for communion. Please take time not only to read, but to ponder and perhaps use these questions as part of your communion preparation.

Local Mission: Habitat for Humanity: PWC is teaming with Zion Lutheran to support several build days with the Habitat for Humanity/Thrivent Builds/Thrivent Financial for Lutherans building a home for the Thompson family. The build days assigned to PWC/Zion are August 29 and September 20th. The house being built is in the process of being dry walled. The September 20th date is just before the final dedication and will consist of final touch ups and cleaning. There are several ways to volunteer. To sign up and help with construction visit the Habitat for Humanity web site (http://www.fortcollinshabitat.org/) and signup to work. Volunteers are needed for the assigned days and additional help is always welcome anytime. You must be 16 years or older to volunteer and ages 16-18 require a parent signature. If you feel you do not know about construction, then fear not as onsite training is provided. PWC/Zion are providing lunch to the volunteers on the assigned days, so helping to provide and serve food is an alternative for helping. Finally, we are trying to fill the pantry for the Thompson family as a welcoming to their new home. Any non-perishables or household items that you could provide would help with this gesture of generosity. Any questions please contact Mike Allison (223-5284).

As a fund raiser for the Habitat for Humanity/Thrivent Builds/ Thrivent Financial for Lutherans building a home for the Thompson family, Habitat for Humanity is having a shred-it day at the Foothills Mall (ROSS parking lot) on August 29 from 9 a.m.-12 pm. For a reduced fee you can shred paper and recycle electronics, TV and monitors. Please check out the flyers by the mailbox or read one hanging on the bulletin board on the hall towards the kitchen. Volunteers are welcome for helping. 11

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

Dr. Jan Lohmeyer met with the newly formed early childhood education committee on July 17th. Additionally, members of church council and the board of elders were present. At the meeting, Dr. Lohmeyer provided an interpretation of the demographic study done by LCEF and explored the feasibility of providing an early childhood program at PWC. Based on information provided and the time commitment required to pursue this endeavor, the committee is considering bringing Dr. Lohmeyer back to complete the feasibility study. In order to do this Dr. Lohmeyer would conduct surveys of the community and congregation to determine the need/ interest. Furthermore he would explore potential financial support/funding, market for potential students, provide a facilities evaluation and case for support. Dr. Lohmeyer would then provide a final written report and a presentation to the church council/congregation to provide the findings of the study. Dr. Lohmeyer would also provide us with his professional opinion as to what we should be pursuing at PWC. If you have any questions or would like to be involved with the committee pursuing this endeavor, please contact Ryan Behm at 222-5678, Eric Petago at 581-8705 or Renee Hein at 402-9670. 14

“Invasion of Brule” It was a huge success! We had a wonderful time and were able to complete all but one of the jobs and even managed to add a few extra jobs. The people of Brule were welcoming and appreciative, the food was great, the youth and other volunteers worked hard and cheerfully, the weather was beautiful and of course the Dickmander family was gracious and wonderful as always. The members of St. John’s are faithful and caring, there were no major injuries and it was a blessing for them and us to be able to do this event! We enjoyed the fellowship, swimming, friendships (old & new) and worshiping together. Thank you for your support and prayers - Marilyn

Scrip Fundraiser Parents - please sign-up to help with scrip sales during the summer months. If we can have scrip available on the first and third Sunday that would be a great help - Thanks! We have many cards for immediate purchase and you may order any available card and receive it the following Sunday. Stop by the Youth Table and see what is available. Thank you for supporting the Youth! 15

**************************************************** BLUEBERRIES - ENJOY ALL YEAR During the summer blueberries ripen from June through August depending on the variety. Take advantage of this delicious berry by freezing some for the winter. Pulling out summer blueberries in the winter to make muffins, pancakes, waffles, or pie is a real treat. Unwashed blueberries will stay fresh for up to two weeks in the refrigerator if kept dry. If a recipe calls for a can of blueberries, you may make your own by using 2-1/2 cups of fresh blueberries, 1 tablespoon corn starch, 1-1/2 teaspoons of lemon juice, and 1/8 cup of water. Cook until thickened and clear. Cool before using as a substitute. Freezing Blueberries: Place dry unwashed, and unsweetened berries in freezing containers or plastic bags. Seal and freeze. The berries will freeze individually and pour out like marbles. Tip: When using frozen berries in your baking, do not thaw, always add frozen so they will not “bleed” in your baked goods.
