Week of November 9, 2009 a weekly publication for the Williams School community

Dear Williams School Families, It might be hard for some people to believe but it’s true. A few weeks ago, we had our final assembly for the We-Pull walk. There were two students who had raised enough money to qualify for the grand prize, a brand new iPod. As I announced this prize, a hush fell over the MPR. Everyone was pretty much in awe of the fact that someone would get this coveted reward. As I announced the two student’s names, Caylee Hirschfeld and Maria Cetrone, there were barely audible murmurings of, “Wow!” and “Cool!” The third and fifth grader, respectively, happened to be sitting at the front of the assembly. Caylee with her big and Maria was tending to her little. I made a little production of the drawing I was about to do. I placed both of their names in a hat and mixed them up to further the excitement of the moment. As I pulled out the name, I looked at the audience. Everyone was anxiously anticipating the outcome. “Well, it appears Maria Cetrone is this year’s winner!” Everyone cheered and I noticed that Caylee was smiling and clapping. To Caylee’s credit, she was truly happy for Maria. Maria came up and accepted the gift and went back with her little. Since it was the end of the assembly, we all sang our school song, as we have done since the 1930’s and I dismissed everyone to their weekends. I noticed that Maria went over to Caylee and the two of them were talking back and forth. I smiled and got busy doing departure duties in the pickup line. At home later that night, I received an email from Caylee’s dad. “Maria told my daughter that she knew how many houses Caylee went to get enough sales to qualify for the grand prize. “ The email continued, “Maria told Caylee that although she was happy just a few people pledged a lot of money for her fundraising dollars, she didn’t go to any houses to collect pledges. She told Caylee that she was proud of her work and that she thought Caylee should have the iPod because of her hard work.” As I read the email, I got shivers up my spine- the kind that eventually make your hair stand on end. Maria gave Caylee the iPod with a smile and just carried on her way. So in a crowded room, without anyone noticing or really paying attention, in the hustle and bustle of dismissal, Maria gave away her prize because she believed another deserved it more. No shame, no hard feelings, no adult orchestrating the interaction. It was a pure act; one which was absolutely full to the brim with integrity and honor. Maria would probably not like this Broadcast because it brings attention to her. She doesn’t care for that. I apologize up front if I am embarrassing either of these wonderful people. I just thought you all would like to know. Way to go parents. Way to go families. Way to go friends. Way to go teachers. Way to go Caylee. Way to go Maria. Take care,
