Brethren Christian High School Coaches Manual Athletic Statement of Philosophy Interscholastic Athletics are an integral part of the total school educational program. Athletics can help to develop young athletes in the areas of knowledge, skills and emotional patterns. Athletics should promote the development of Biblical qualities such as self-control, loyalty, leadership, teamwork, hard work and friendship. Additionally, the concept of being on a team should allow the athlete opportunities to excel in the areas of humility and selflessness and at the same time give the athlete a proud feeling of belonging. Sportsmanship is paramount at Brethren Christian and held in high esteem. Sportsmanship and fair play in athletics can be a great tool and maybe the best way to shine God's light on this world. Winning is not the only thing, but to play at a maximum ability level with maximum effort is the goal for every team. Athletics should be fun and at the same time be a great challenge. To begin a season with the idea of "let's see how good we can get as a team" is the challenge goal for each team. Individual accomplishments by athletes are naturally gained and heightened when the team focus is maintained. The real team accomplishment is not wins or losses but a unified goal of getting better and working hard week by week. A team that is under-achieving but still winning is void of the full athletic experience. The Little League pledge touches on many of the philosophies that we desire at Brethren Christian, "I trust in God, I love my country and will respect its laws, I will play fair and strive to win, but win or lose I will always do my best-" Above all, we are striving to do what is right and do the things that bring glory to our Lord Jesus Christ. THE BCHS SPORTSMANSHIP STATEMENT The goal of our athletic department is to bring honor and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ through the ministry of interscholastic sports. Our desire is to have coaches, athletes and spectators who will best serve the Lord through their actions. In compliance with the league's constitutional objective of promoting good sportsmanship through the observance of Christian standards, the following code of conduct will be followed. Coaches have a primary responsibility for setting the pattern of behavior for the contest. The conduct of the coach, in practice and in games, establishes the tone of behavior that will be projected to all participants. The attitude and conduct of the coach will be the Christ-like actions of one who is called by the name of our Lord. Athletes are responsible to play each contest in a highly competitive way, from beginning to end, according to the spirit of the rules of the game. There is no good reason for an athlete or a team to give up the contest, regardless of the score or the time or the distance remaining. The athlete is responsible to compete and behave in practice and games in a way that brings honor and glory to God. All game participants, including spectators, are responsible for treating the officials with the Biblical honor that is due an authority figure. Game participants are to appreciate the officials' hard work and respect their decisions. All coaches are responsible to shake hands with the officials and opposing Coach in public view immediately after the contest. Anytime a player (ours or theirs) is injured during a game, players on and off the field/court should group together for prayer. HEAD COACH JOB RESPONSIBILITIES I. REPORTS TO: Athletic Director II. 2. For less severe injuries in which the school trainer can treat the athlete, no medical permission is required for the athlete's return. The coach must follow up with a phone call to the parents that night following the injury/treatment. Any pertinent information and verification of the phone call should be recorded in writing UNIFORM PURCHASES The purchasing of uniforms for any team must adhere to the following: 1. Athletic Director approval 2. Money should come out of your Restricted Account, not out of your General Budget 3. Booster/PTF assistance with the buying of uniforms must be a 60/40 deal (Booster/PTF kicks in 60% and the Sports Restricted Account, 40%). This 60/40 arrangement needs to be approved by the AD by June RESOLVING SCHEDULING CONFLICTS BETWEEN ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES and FINE ARTS ACTIVITIES It is our desire and intent to provide a well-rounded education for BCHS students and consequently, we encourage our young people to be involved in as many activities as possible to accomplish this goal. It is obvious they cannot be involved in every available opportunity and it is equally obvious limiting them to one activity is unrealistic. Problems occur when student/athletes are "double-booked"--- they need to be in two places at the same time. This problem is ours (with input from parents when necessary) to resolve, not the students. Remember, yours is not the only program on campus. We cannot afford to function with tunnel-vision. The conflict resolution procedure will be as follows: 1. A Contest (game) overrides a rehearsal. 2. A Performance (concert) overrides a practice. 3. When a conflict exists between a practice and a rehearsal or a performance and a game, a "give and take" policy based upon the objective information available should prevail. This "give and take" is the responsibility of the teachers, coaches and advisors. Communication is the key. Get together and "work it out". If together a mutual decision cannot be reached, the Administration should be consulted for a final decision. Ideally, all parties should submit their schedules well- in-advance (at least a year), so that many of these scheduling conflicts can be avoided. COACHES CHECK LIST 1. All three (3) medical forms must be completed and turned in before the athlete may begin practice 2. Turn in completed rosters (typed) to the AD within three (3) days after final cuts (all coaches) 3. Familiarize yourself with the: a. BCHS accident form b. Incident CIF form c. 214 CIF form d. Officials CIF Evaluation form 4. Turn in all dates for practices, games and meetings to Activities Director to be put on the Master Calendar 5.
