Early Brain Development Farhana khatani HDP (ECD) ( 27th July 2009)
1
Goal To broaden knowledge about the
significance of development of brain during early years.
2
Objectives By the end of session, learners will be able to: Understand the process of brain development. To recognize the impact of teen age pregnancy, domestic violence, child abuse and use of alcohol and smoking during pregnancy.
3
Brain Development The process of the formation and growing of
brain in the mother womb. The formation of the sensory cells in the fetus. The main function of the brain to develop responsible social behavior including maintaining good health, high intelligence and ability to learn.
4
References in Quran about child brain development Surah –e – Al Momayanon Aayat 12 to
14. Surah – e – Qayamat Aayat 37 to 39. Surah – e – Unkabot Aayat 6. Surah 4 Aayat 95. Surah 70 Aayat 17.
5
Factors that effects on brain development Early marriages (Teenage pregnancy). Child Abuse. Domestic Violence (Stress). Use of Alcohol and Smoking during pregnancy. Nutrition. Health care. Exposure to radiations. Environmental factors. 6
Early Marriages/ Teenage Pregnancy Teenage mother can not take care of her health including food , hygiene, vaccination, taking rest and other important precautions to be done during pregnancy.
7
Child Abuse Neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse have
profound immediate and long-term effects on a child’s development. The long-term effects of abuse and neglect of a child can be seen in higher rates of psychiatric disorders, increased rates of substance abuse, and a variety of severe relationship difficulties.
8
Domestic Violence (Stress) Violence on pregnant ladies cause serious effects on development of child. Stress creates a disturbance in the personality of child. Stress causes shrinking of a part of brain which is associated with memory.
9
Alcohol and Smoking during Pregnancy Smoking (active and passive) and use of alcohol
both are risk factors for complication during pregnancy and disorder in new born. Low birth weight. Respiratory infections. Asthma.
Modest impairment of cognitive development.
10
Unfortunately, high rates of child abuse and neglect across the
country as well as persistently high rates of school failure in some communities indicate that far too many children do not receive what they need during their first few years for healthy brain growth and development. As our society becomes even more technically and socially complex, we cannot afford to continue to allow large numbers of children to miss out on the positive experiences they need in infancy and early childhood; the costs, in terms of lost intellectual potential and increased rates of emotional and behavioral problems, are too high. The new developments in brain research show us what children need; our challenge is to ensure that every child receives it. 11
