What are green homes? That’s all everyone is talking about but is it feasible for a homeowner? Chris Ludwig, outside sales rep for BMC West, wanted to know what our clients want with green building and what direction the industry is going? Most products qualifying for certified green construction are practical products we specify already but it takes research to see through the shades of green. There are a growing number of authorities on sustainable practices, from the international LEED Homes program, to the local Green Built Texas. BMC sees value in this movement and is dedicated making sure Dallas homes are leaders of energy and environmental design. Not only is it what homeowners will be demanding, but it can enhance your business. We offer quality products that can achieve higher standards of construction through certified agencies. As a Home Builder Association partner, we sponsor continuing education for architects and builders to help them design “Between 40% and 50% of homes built in 2010 are expected to be green.” “National Association of Home Builders, 2007

BMC WEST GREEN PRACTICES

-No environmental exposure policy, certified by the State of Texas -100% of BMC mill manufacturing waste is sent to recycling -High-tech CNC router replaces 12 shapers, using less energy -Computerized machine reduces 20% energy of commander line -Pursuing high efficiency lighting, which consumes 40% less energy -Cab-over trucks replaced flat bed trucks, using 30% less fuel -Manufacturing glues and seals are non-toxic and water-based -Delivery and dispatch tracking minimizes pollution and fuel -Damaged or incorrect door and trim orders are resold to public -Utilize high-yield machining of trim, minimizing mill waste -Credit customer for reusable trim left at jobsite for resale -All finger-joint trim products have No Added Formaldehyde -All MDF trim products have low Volatile Organic Compounds -All flex trim has zero VOCs and zero Mercury content

SCS TruStile’s manufacturing philosophy influences the way they do business. MDF can be SCS-Certified through their scientific-based environmental standards to contain No Added Formaldehyde and manufactured with low-emitting adhesives. All MDF solid doors have a minimum of 82% recycled content. In their new MDF reclamation process, scrap MDF is ground up and donated to agricultural partners. They have reduced manufacturing waste by 65%, which means fewer fossil-fuel burning and less waste in a landfill.

arona An increased demand for building materials that are extracted and manufactured within the region, caused Karona to act. 10-20% of products are regional supporting indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impact. Karona’s doors are manufactured with reduced indoor air contaminants for the safety of installers and occupants. The advanced UV finishing also meets the strictest environmental standards.

High-performance Low-E glass lowers energy costs, reduces heat loss and gain, and limits condensation. Patio doors with Low-E glass are also ENERGY STAR rated, which means they exceed the minimum energy efficiency criteria by as much as 40%. Fewer resources are used where possible in products to maximize efficiency. Jeld-wen uses recycled and reused wood fiber to produce SCS-Certified interior doors and wood composite garage doors. Recycled wood, vinyl, glass and aluminum have also been a focus in their long history in manufacturing. Multiple manufacturing facilities are located in high-population areas to allow production in closer proximity to more markets than competitors. This helps reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Auralast doors and frames are produced with a proprietary protection process, reducing the industry standard VOC by 96% in addition to their increased durability. Molded interior doors are also produced with No Added Formaldehyd.

Masonite BuildingGreen.com, selected Masonite Safe 'N Sound Emerald doors as a 2008 Top-10 Green Building Product. This award recognizes the most innovative and exciting Green Building products added to the Environmental Building News or GreenSpec Directory. Where possible, Masonite utilizes recycled materials in their door products. The interior molded door facings that Masonite manufactures contain post-industrial wood chips. In addition, Wheatcore, particleboard and fiber products all have recycled content. Masonite’s steel and fiberglass doors can be assembled to qualify for ENERGY STAR. Fiberglass doors feature rapidly expanding polyurethane foam and wraparound steel. No Formaldehyde adhesives and binders are used in many interior products. Adhesives and sealants in door assembly also offer low VOC emissions. Even the manufacturing plants are designed to be easy on the environment.

Safe-N-Sound series doors are manufactured with DorCor, which is produced from rapidly renewable wheat straw/fiber. No old growth timber is harvested solely for the use of Masonite doors.

Hardwoods Specialty Products is committed to sustainable alternatives to our natural resources. EchoWood engineered veneers provide endless opportunities in which to create the look of the most common, to the most exotic species without impacting forestry sustainability. EchoWood is constructed in renewable Bass wood or Ayous wood veneers and applied to MDF, PBC or veneer core backing with No Added Formaldehyde. EchoWood’s use of common wood fiber from well managed and plantation-grown forests provide an excellent renewable resource. Hardwoods also offers Bamboo, the fastest growing plant on earth, in solid panels, plywood and veneer. Mature bamboo has similar hardness characteristics to that of domestic hardwoods and does not require replanting.

SCS Millennium Door’s patented construction enables control of composite wood, adhesives and sealants, reducing the quantity of indoor air contaminants.

MDF is recycled from the byproducts of the lumber industry, utilizing the extra wood and sawdust unable to be made into anything else. Millennium MDF doors are certified by SCS with 40-80% pre-consumer recycled material.

With close suppliers, products are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

Offering five times the insulation value of a wood door and ozone-friendly CFC-free foam, is a key element of every Therma-Tru door system. In 1983, they introduced the industry's very first energy-efficient fiberglass door with a polyurethane foam core. Today more than 98% of all Therma-Tru products are ENERGY STAR qualified. Each glass panel is sealed between two panes of energy-efficient tempered glass. Recycled products like wood chips, diapers and plastic bottles are used in the top and bottom of doors. In 2005 and 2006, two facilities recycled more than 12,000 tons of materials. From 2005 to 2007, landfill waste was reduced by 28% with excess waste donated to Habitat for Humanity, HomeAid and The Storehouse by World Vision. Water-based finishing systems are used to minimize VOC emissions and offer a stain that is environmentally-friendly and low-maintenance.
