The Scientific Method

What is the scientific method?

This is a way to solve a problem. All scientists use this special problem solving method because scientists all over the world trust this method to work.

Do other people use this method? Detectives

use the scientific method

Do other people use this method? Athletes use the Scientific Method

Do other people use this method?

Businessmen use the Scientific Method

Do other people use this method? 

People like you and I use the Scientific Method?

How does the Scientific Method work?

 There

are steps that must be followed to use the Scientific Method.  They are easy to learn and to follow.  Let’s try them together.

1. The Problem The problem is a statement of your concern in the form of a question.  The question must always end with a 

?

2. Make an Observation Smell See Hear

Feel

Taste

Research your topic Find out what is already known about your topic, And see what you can add to the information.

3. Make a Hypothesis 

 

The hypothesis should be a statement that contains an: If-----------------then--------------statement. Is it testable?

4. Materials & Methods Gather the supplies needed to conduct the experiment.  Set up the experiment  Decide what steps will need to be taken to conduct the experiment 

Step 4 Plan your experiment Make a game plan of, when where, how, and what you are going to do. Be sure all steps are safe

5. Procedure/Protocol

Let’s give it a try This is the step in which you perform the steps of the experiment

Step 6 Collect and Analyze Data This is all the information That you are seeking– charts data tables, and observations

Collect Data There are two types of data. Numerical data includes:  numerical information Graphs Charts 23 41 68

Observations Includes things Collected with the 5 senses

Analyze The Data

Study the information collected during the lab until you develop an understanding of the data.  The data is meaningless without this step. 

Step 7 Draw a Conclusion Answer the Problem. This is a statement that should not begin with

I Think!!!!

Step 8 Communicate Results Share what you learned  This can be done with a report or graph  Some results can be published 

Like I said,”Eve ryo ne can use the Scientific Method to solve a problem”

I&O 

Variable- change or could be changed. Independent-changed on purpose. Dependent-responds to the independent variable. Constant-things that are kept the same.

An inference is your best guess based on the information available and the circumstances involved. Observation is the taking in of information by the body and becoming aware of that information.
