PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. Typically it uses three-dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. The process produces the Building Information Model (also abbreviated BIM), which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: BIM Drafters translate the ideas and rough sketches of engineers and architects into detailed drawings. Experienced workers may advance to plan checkers, detailers or design drafters. A typical work week of 40 hours, but overtime may be required to meet deadlines. Drafters work for engineering and architectural consulting firms, manufacturing firms, designers, and a variety of government agencies. PROGRAM OUTCOMES: South Puget Sound Community College believes that all students need to develop a broad range of abilities that will not only make them more effective in their professional pursuits but will enhance their capacity to relate well to others in their daily lives. Therefore students who complete the program will be able to: Demonstrate the following skills standards specific to Computer Aided Drafting:  Produce design documentation to industry standards using Building Information Modeling software.  Develop complete architectural plans with consideration for aesthetics, cost, methods of construction, building codes and common industrial practices.  Model mechanical design concepts in 3D using the latest solid modeling software.  Develop realistic static and animated visualizations of designs.  Work in design teams. Communicate effectively. Think logically and critically. Evaluate and process quantitative and symbolic data. CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS: Based on placement testing, basic skills and/or pre-college English, Reading, or Math may be required (ENGL 097, READ 097 & MATH 090). Deficiencies must be completed prior to graduation; however, students are strongly encouraged to enroll at the beginning of their education. See the Curriculum Planning Worksheet.

Contributions to success in the Building Information Modeling Program: If you are considering BIM Technology you should answer yes to these questions: I am prepared for a wide variety of teaching methods including traditional lecture and hybrid on line instruction. I am ready for the challenge of mastering complex software applications in a rapid delivery environment.

I understand that BIM Technology is an emerging technology and consider myself a “life-long learner” I work well in a team environment with a diverse group of classmates. Although my experience working with design and construction of buildings may be limited, I understand most employers are looking for experienced individuals that understand not only how to model but also what they are modeling If you indeed agree with these statements you may a good candidate for this emerging technology. Admission: Students are accepted into the Program fall quarter. Cooperative Work Experience/Internships: Cooperative Work Experience is the internship program at South Puget Sound Community College and offers students an opportunity to receive college credit for paid or unpaid work experience related to their educational goals. This program gives students an opportunity to apply their skills while still in college. For more information or for an appointment, contact the Cooperative Work Experience/Internship office at (360) 596-5359 (Bldg 25129A) or at http://www.spscc.ctc.edu/internship/ DIVERSITY REQUIREMENT: South Puget Sound Community College requires all new students seeking an Associate Degree to complete a “diversity” course which meets the college criteria for listing as a diversity course and has been approved for such listing by the college Instructional Council prior to the student enrolling in the class.
