Testimonial: Beverley High School Arts, Design & Technology Block Hobson & Porter Ltd were selected to build the Art, Design & Technology Centre at Beverley High School in 2007, following a single tender within the East Riding construction framework. The contract was NEC3 option C target cost, and the value approximately £1.65M for 1000m2 GIFA. The building is a two storey steel and glulam framed structure, with brick walls and a mixture of tiled and single ply roofing. Its unusual shape is the consequence of being squeezed into a restricted site between existing buildings and protected mature trees. The contractor performed very well on site. Key to this was a very experienced site manager, who was in control of operations, and had authority for ordering materials, plant, labour and subcontractors, made decisions and supervised workmanship, supported by some experienced own labour site staff. He also had the support of a contracts manager, quantity surveyor and buyer at head office, but by comparison with some other contractors, these people were not full time on the project. The project was completed within a week of target completion date; workmanship was generally of a high standard; pre-completion snag lists were not excessive; and post-completion defects have been attended to promptly. There were no safety problems on site. In order to complete the project on programme, both the design and contracting team used the shortest possible communication routes, giving quick responses to site queries, and avoiding unnecessary paper trails. We have worked with this contractor on many occasions, and would be happy to do so again.
