Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Microsoft Word allows for students to create their own product within a template. There are accessibility tools built into Microsoft Word for text to speech, magnification, and other assistive options. Engagement: The template allows students to create a product of their own. This product will be shared with the school population. The teacher will print their brochures in color and have them displayed. Representation: The Word template can be adapted for whatever a student wants to create. They will use different font, images, and other elements to represent their point of view. Action and Expression: There are multiple options for students to express themselves. The template allows for students to place images. If students have another template, they can use it (providing it contains all the information). Lesson idea implementation: This lesson will be a summative assessment about an important person in 1900s Georgia. In the beginning the students will have time to research their Georgians and they will have access to the template using the classroom’s laptop set. The template lays out what information must be included in the brochure. The teacher will circulate throughout the classroom to advise and monitor progress. The students will have to use an e-reference to gain information about their Georgian. The students will have access to the computer lab the following day or two to produce their final product. This will allow for support from the media specialist. Reflective Practice: I feel the activities will encourage students to give more effort because their final product will be printed and displayed. Often teachers will use technology and then have it displayed on the computer for their grading purposes. This lesson will show students to consider image manipulation, font/text choice, and concise language needed for information brochures.
