Basant has always been a joyous occasion, for Ahmed’s family. They celebrate it warmly .All the members of family are gathered on their rooftop. They enjoy themselves by flying kites, dancing on drum beating, singing and fireworks. Last year the whole scene of this joy and cheer was changed in a moment when fourteen years old Ahmed was flying kites with a metal wire. The wire came in contact with high power transmission cable and burnt the boy. Ahmed has burnt on more then 50% of his body. He was the only son of his parents. The mother fell into a swoon on hearing the news of such a frightful death of her son. Another sad event took place when eight years old Amjad lost his life while catching a stray kite on a roadside at Hanjarwal when a tractor crushed him... Shumaila became the victim of a stray bullet. Which was fired by a basant lover last year .She was playing at her home she never be able to enjoy any scene due to losing her sight. According to a news report basant 2005 claims nineteen lives besides leaving hundreds of other injured as lahorites did their way to record the deadliest celebration .No less than twenty lives and around one thousand received injuries in different incidents on the basant day. The basant night celebration had already claimed the lives of at least four children while three hundred other were wounded. The month of February has deep roots with the arrival of spring season .In ancient Rome February was the official beginning of spring and it was considered a time for purification There is a feeling of happiness and the whole scene, which has become sad and gloomy due to the chill and cold, is removed and a wave of new atmosphere is arose. All trees and plants are felt to be dressed in new clothes Lush green colour is looked very attractive to our eyes. Everyone is engaged to perform his duties, whether these duties are official or educational. One has no time to spend with natural scenes. Little birds are also started chirping to announce the coming of spring season their pleasant voices awakened human beings. Enchanted fragrance of flowers is smelt all around. Bright colour show an emotion of joy and excitement .Man wants to some recreation in his life. Sometimes he enjoys by flying kites and sometime he organizes

spring festivals. Let us see how “zinda dilaan’’ give reception to the king of seasons. Lahorites flouted all bans and continued to fire shots indiscriminately in the air like kites. Many people had cut the string of their lives while trying to cut the string of a paper kite of opponent. No less than forty people were severely injured as a result of air firing. Open display and usage of semi-automatic and automatic weapons was witnessed in different areas. As many as forty people were admitted to the Mayo Hospital Record showed that most of them had sustained bullet wounds .The record clearly exposed the police claims of having checked and nabbed people involved in air firing .The same hospital’s children ward received eighty children patients with basant related injuries. One hundred and forty were admitted to sir Ganga Ram Hospital while twenty were brought to Shaikh Zayed twenty patients were brought to Lahore General Hospital. Many wounded were admitted to other private hospitals and clinics of different areas of the city. Two young boys of age fourteen and twenty-five were admitted to the hospital due to severe head injuries. Both fell off their rooftops trying to keep their kites remain flying. Doctors were hopeless to see their condition. After taking the lives of many people these deadly celebrations of thirty-six hours was ended people violated the laws not to use metal wires, air firing and usage of loud speakers. String is lubricated with different chemicals commonly known as “manjha”due to this “manjha” string is acted like a sharp sword. Many accidents were taken place due to this characteristic of string. Bashir, a Mason, was engaged in his duty at second flour before a week from basant. Suddenly he felt that someone was cutting his neck with knife .he called his companions, to save him from this sudden attack. They saw him lying on the floor senselessly. They brought him downstairs and runs to the nearest clinic. Doctor told them that he had lost his life due to over flowing of blood .He was the only laborious of his family. There are many other damages also taken place due to this spring festival. LESCO has suffered a loss of Rs. 60 million caused by power losses and fluctuations that hit the city’s electricity transmission system on Basant night. Electricity fluctuations are caused damages to costly machinery like television, refrigerator and computer etc.

Patients could not take rest during the whole duration of basant celebrations due to outcry of the people. The whole material to celebrate the basant is costly and only rich families can celebrate the festival. Inferiority complex is developed in lower middle and poor class of the country. Raw material for manufacturing kites and strings and fireworks is imported from other countries. We should use this money for constructive purposes instead of destruction. Every year basant is celebrated warmly. Many people sacrificed their lives in the name of entertainment. Some people become excused as a warming for others. They suffer the whole life for their little mistake. Young boys fell down from the rooftops having low boundary walls and met a fracture in legs and arms they spent their precious days in hospital for recovery of their injuries. This time has great importance for students because annual exam are being started in most of our school. But boys’ do not care about their studies and remain busy in kite flying. Basant is promoted through media. Special programmes are arranged and advertised by the investors. Different schemes are started like free kites on shopping at a specific product. We are not saying basant is a bad festival but it should be celebrated in a right way. People should learn from history and try to leave the usage of damaging material. Competitions should be arranged in gardens and grounds instead of rooftops. Metal wires, air firing, fireworks, loud music, drum beating in residential area should be banned. We should keep in mind about helpless people affected from earthquake they demand help from their brothers instead of spending a lot of money just for fun and enjoyment of “boo kata” .we can relieve them.
