Bawang Merah & Bawang Putih A long time ago, there lived a couple husband and wife. They had a teenage beautiful daughter, named Bawang Putih. Her father was a seller, he liked a long trip. They were harmonious and peaceful living. But one day, Putih’s mother was sick and eventually died. Bawang Putih had very similarly in his father’s sorrow. Suddenly, a new neighbors have moved to their village, which was a widow and her daughter named Bawang Merah. Since the Putih’s mother died, Merah’s mother often went to the Bawang Putih house. She liked to bring food for Bawang Putih and her father, and Bawang Merah also help cleaned the house. Putih Papa Mama Red Papa Mama Red Merah Putih Merah

: “Dad, I miss mommy so much.” : “Me too, darling. But mommy don’t want if we are always sad. We have to be stronger.” : “Hello, anybody home?” : “Hey, is there something I can help?” : “What a beautiful afternoon! I want to give you and Putih this friend chicken, you may hungry and want to taste it.” : “Yes, you have to! Because it is so yummy. And I want to help Putih too, to clean the house or wash the dishes.” : “You both are so kind, thank you very much.” : “It is okay, Putih.”

Finally, Bawang Putih’s father thought that it would be great if he just marry Bawang Merah’s mother, then Bawang Putih not so lonely anymore. Then Bawang Putih’s father and Bawang Merah’s mother are married. One day, Papa White want to go to the city for a couple days.

Papa Mama Red Papa White Bawang Merah

: “Honey, I want to go to sell something in the city. I will go for a several days. Please take care of Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih.” : “Okay, I will take care of them well.” : “Bawang Putih, Bawang Merah, what do you want from the city?” : “I want many beautiful dresses, shoes, and jewelry.”

: “I just want a white rose and your safe, dad.” : “Okay. I will get your request. Bye..bye.. all!” : “Bye..bye, papa!”

Their father gone and a worst accident occured. During a trip to the city, the car crashed into the bus because the bus driver drowsiness. So causing the death of Putih’s father. Knowing this, Putih really feel so sad and hurt. At first, Bawang Merah’s mother and Bawang Merah was very good to Bawang putih. However, the nature of long run they began to look authentic. They often bristled Bawang Putih and gave her much homework. Bawang Putih must do all of it, while Bawang Merah’s mother and Bawang Merah just sit only. : “Putih! You should wash clothes, dishes, and all kind of homework!” : “Wash my clothes until clean like new! Understand?!” : “O..okay. I do understand” : “Quickly!” : “But I feel so hungry, can I eat first?” : “No, absolutely not!”

Everyday, Bawang Putih always abused by Mama Red and Bawang Merah. Because they were too lazy to do homework, all they wanted just stayed in big house and got much money without working. But Bawang Putih always happy to do the work, because she hopes one day the stepmother will love her such as her own child. When Bawang Putih go to the river to wash the clothes, she missed her mother and dreamy. Unfortunately, one of Bawang Merah’s shirt swept away and lost. Bawang Putih felt guilty and feared to come back home. She kept looking down to the mouth of the river, but still not found. So she decided to return home and hope not be scolded. : “Putih! Do you see my lovely shirt?” : “Which one, Merah?” : “The red one with a ribbon on the shoulder. Do you know?” : “Hmmmm....” : “Mommyyy! She drown my favorite shirt, I can’t believe it!” : “Where’s the shirt, Putih? Don’t make me angry!” : “I didn’t mean to get rid of the shirt, it’s flowing down the river when I washed it.” : “What?! The shirt was expensive! Go find it now or you aren’t going to eat at this home before you found it.” : “I’ve been looking down to the river’s edge, but the shirt are not found too. I will save my money for changing that shirt, mom.” : “Go find it again! Before it’s found you can’t go home!”

She was really worried so she walked along the river side to find the shirt. Finally she met an old woman. Old Putih Old Putih Old Putih Old Putih Old Putih

: “Hey pretty girl, what are you doing?” : “I am looking for my step sister’s shirt. Because it swept away by the river when I washed it.” : “What it look like?” : “Red shirt with a ribbon on the shoulder.” : “Oh I knew it! I found it on the banks of the river caught on a root.” : “Really? Oh thank God. So where is it now?” : “I keep it in my house.” : “Can I get it?” : “Sure, but you have to help me to do the household chores.” : “Okay, with my pleasure.”

They walked together to the old woman’s house. After everything was done, the old woman returned the shirt. And she also gave Bawang Putih a gift. The old woman had two pumpkins, one pumpkin was small and the other one was big. Bawang Putih had to choose one. Old Putih Old Putih Old Putih

: “There you go.” (giving the red shirt) : “Thank you so much for keeping it safely.” : “No, I thank you because you’ve help me to clean my house.” : “You are very welcome, I used to do it everyday.” : “In return, you must choose between this two pumpkins for you to take home.” : “Hmm, alright. I choose the small one.”

Bawang Putih wasn’t a greedy girl. So she took the small one. After thanking the old woman, Bawang Putih then went home. When she arrived home, her step mother and Bawang Merah were angry. They had been waiting for her all day long. Bawang Putih then told about the clothes, the old woman, and the pumpkin. Her mother was really angry so she grabbed the pumpkin and smashed it to the floor. Suddenly they all were surprised. Inside the pumpkin they found jewelries.

Mama

: “Bawang Merah, hurry up. Go to the river and throw my clothes into the water. After that, find the old woman. Remember, you have to take the big pumpkin.”

Merah

: “Okay mom. I will do exactly the same as Bawang Putih’s experience.”

Bawang Merah immediately went to the river. She threw the clothes and pretended to search them. Not long after that, she met the old woman. Again she asked Bawang Merah to do household chores. She refused and asked the old woman to give her a big pumpkin. The old woman then gave her the big one. Bawang Merah was so happy. She ran very fast. When she arrived home, her mother was impatient. She directly smashed the pumpkin to the floor. They were screaming. There was a spider inside the pumpkin! They were really scared. They were afraid the spider would bite them. Merah

: “Mom, I think God just punished us. We had done bad things to Bawang Putih. And God didn’t like that. We have to apologize to Bawang Putih.”

Mama

: “Yes, I agree with you, darl. Let’s see Putih. Putih, we are so sorry for having treated you badly and without any sense of humanity. We shouldn’t do that.

Putih

: “It okay, mom. I did it all with willingness, so it doesn’t matter. Overmore, that’s all over. Let’s start a brand new day with joy, love, and hope!”

Finally, both of them realized their mistakes. They apologized and Bawang Putih forgave them. Now the family is not poor anymore. Bawang Putih decided to sell all the jewelries and used the money for their daily lives.
