The Newsletter of Edward Peake C of E Middle School Autumn Term 2008: Newsletter Number 6

BACK COPIES STILL AVAILABLE Bonfire Night Celebrations: Saturday 8th November

Joint St Andrew’s Church / Edward Peake Firework Party Ticket order form attached to this newsletter Do you have the time to help to improve your child's education?

Could you be a Parent Governor? We are seeking nominations from among our parents to fill two vacancies and I am pleased to invite those of you who feel you have the time to attend governors’ meetings (about one a month, including committees) and to generally take a care and concern for the school, to put yourself forward. The attached nomination form gives details of how to volunteer. I am more than happy to talk with anyone who thinks they may have a ‘calling’ to fill this role. Governors only give a few hours of their time, but have a vital role in the management and oversight of the school. I do urge anyone who feels interested to find out more about how you can serve your child's school.

Church Schools' Harvest Festival Congratulations to Mr Della Valle and his fifty-four strong choir who were the stars of the show at the Bishop of Bedford's Church Schools' Harvest Festival celebration at St Paul's Church in Bedford last Thursday. Not only did they sing like angels, giving a fantastic performance of the beautiful and thought-provoking song 'Questions at Harvest', they caused much comment from church members and diocesan about how well-behaved they were. I even had approving comments from heads of other schools! Rare as hen's teeth! ******************************************************************************************* Well done…. to all those children and families who have collected and filled shoeboxes with gifts for the OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD appeal. The last day for bringing boxes and items is Wednesday 5th November (an easy date to remember!) as they will be collected for transport to Eastern Europe later that week.

New Menu for after half term – and a letter from Eden Foodservice East Bedfordshire School Sports Partnership Newsletter School Cafeteria: New Menu from 4th November With this newsletter you will receive a copy of the new menu. In print, it appears to have improvements from the previous one and I would genuinely recommend it to parents. I purchase a dinner myself on most days, often turning up right at the end of the serving time and my experience of our dinners is almost always a very good one. The bad news is that the cost of meals rises to £1.80 after half term (see attached letter). Parent Teacher Association News Following the Annual General Meeting, the PTA Committee has prepared several events for this coming year. During this year members of the PTA will either organise or provide help at these events: Christmas Discos (Y7/8 Friday 12th December) (Y5/6 Tuesday 16th December) Consultation evenings and Sports Day Another Big Breakfast fundraiser on March 26th Quiz night on March 7th Edward Peake Summer Fete on Saturday 20th June and more……… If you missed the AGM but would like to join the committee the next meeting is Monday 24th November. Contact school for details.

Clarinet Lessons We currently have a rare chance for some children to start clarinet lessons at school, with instruments provided free of charge, if required. Ideally, children should have had experience on the recorder, but all will be considered. The cost of the teaching (through Bedfordshire Music) is £68 for eleven shared lessons. More details from Mr Della Valle.
