Heartchangers Partners in ministry
making a difference
August 2009
Dear Ministry Partner, What an adventure! Our team of 33 doctors, dentists, medical students and children’s ministry workers arrived in Honduras on June 27th to set up a clinic in the town of San Marcos de Colon, only 15 minutes away from the Nicaraguan border. The day after we arrived and settled in San Marcos—Honduras had a COUP! The Honduran president, Zelaya was forcibly removed from power. Needless to say for the first couple of days after the coup we didn’t know what to expect. There were troops noticeably hanging around the town armed with automatic weapons. There were rumors that Chavez of Venezuela was going to invade through Nicaragua in order to restore the former President. All of these events were rattling our Honduran hosts—one of our hosts broke down in tears at the thought of her country being thrown into war. We were on our knees praying asking the Lord—what are we to
do? Should we evacuate our team? Or since God called us here, wont we be safe to continue with the clinics that were planned? The more we prayed and worshipped God, the more the fear and concern subsided and a peace washed over our team. Therefore, with the advice of our CMDA national missions director and updates from the American Embassy in Honduras—we knew we were to stay. And has we continued on throughout the week, we
able to see 1,400 patients from San Marcos as well as visit 3 surrounding remote villages of El Rodeo, Yusguare, and Duyure. And throughout the week, just over 150 people indicated decisions for Jesus Christ! How could we leave when God had prepared in advance for us to do this work for His Kingdom? As a postscript to this story, several days before leaving we decided that it would be more prudent to fly out of Managua, Nicaragua rather than Tegucigalpa —the Honduran capital city. God watched over us up to the very end. As we arrived safely home, we heard news reports that the Tegucigalpa airport was shut down because of riots due to Zelaya’s attempt to enter back into the country. Thank you so much for your prayers for our team! Your prayer and financial partnership helped bring not only healing but eternal hope to the Honduran people. Thank you!
