Congratulations!!!! Congratulations, you have begun the school year. Now that you have started with the OLS/LMS curriculums, there is much to do, learn and use. To help you through this process remember your seven habits: 1.

Homeroom Planning (Keep Attendance, Plan your day)

Know your tools (OLS/LMS)

3.

Know your students learning style

4.

Know your limits

5.

Use your partnerships (Teachers, staff, HTA ohana)

6.

Use the Learning Center (Register for your classes)

In addition to all these sources, communications will have a LIVE Elluminate schedule for OLS/LMS specific questions. This schedule will come out on August 15 with all the other Elluminate schedules.

Accessing powerspeaK12 To access powerspeaK12, families must first login to the OLS with a student account user name and password. To create a student account, parents must: 1. Login to the OLS with the learning coach user name and password.

Select My Account in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

3. On the My Account page, parents are able to create a student account by selecting the blue Edit button in the Student Accounts box. 4. Once the student user name and password has been created, parents will want to navigate back to the OLS Home page and select New Log-In for a new login screen to appear. Once the new screen appears, the family will be able to enter the student user name and password that will take them to the student view of the OLS were they will be able to access the world language course. Once logged into the OLS via the student account, students/families will then want to select powerspeaK12 on the side of the screen to access their world language if enrolled in a world language

Kauai News Scantron testing August 5th - all Kauai Students: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm - session 1 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm - session 2 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm - session 3 Testing will be conducted at the Kauai Learning center Princeville Center (upstairs) suite G204 Mr. Piontek will be having a meeting with the new students to let them know a little more on what to expect with their new adventure with HTA. We will also be taking pictures for their student ID cards, as well as taking their scantron assessments. Please Contact McKenna Marich, HTA Office Manager, for scheduling. Seven HTA students will be representing Kauai at Hawaii State Junior Lifeguard Championship, Saturday, August 8th at Ala Moana Beach Park. Almost a third of Kauai's team are HTA students! GO HTA STUDENTS!!!! A schedule of Elluminate Electives, specifically targeting the neighbor island students (Oahu student are encouraged to enroll as space permits), will be sent out Thursday, Aug. 13th.

Box Tops For Education Here's a way to earn money for our school, with the products you might already buy and have in your homes-There are three ways to earn $ for HTA using Box Tops for Education. 1. Clip from products you use at home (go to: http://www.boxtops4education.com/AllAboutBoxTops/ products.aspx to see the variety of products) and bring in ziploc back with your last name to collection box in front office. There will be MONTHLY worksheets printed to glue box tops onto- take one home and turn in to PTSA mailbox (will be there before the Learning Center courses start). Their site has coupons also so you can save $ on the products that will make $ for the school! 2. Sign up online at boxtops4education.com and designate HTA (zip: 96797) as your school for other chances to win credits. Log in and participate in contests like The Big Clip (going on now) where they give away $25,000-$50,000 worth of box tops! 3. Go to boxtops4education.com and log-in before shopping at Barnes & Noble (Reading Room), or other online stores (Marketplace- lots of options) where a % will be credited to HTA for your purchase. Let's see how much we can raise during the school year!

HTA-PTSA NEWS Mahalo to all who helped the PTSA have a wonderful start to the new school year. We had 47 people become members of the PTSA during orientation week. You can still become a member. There are applications at the LC. Please fill one out and ask McKenna to put it in the PTSA mailbox. Membership fee is $15 for adults/ $10 for students. Over 200 people attended the Back to School Beach Bash at Bellows. The Bash was a success thanks to Carmen Perkins, Jeff Piontek, Libra Forde and of course all of our guests. Due to some wonderful dishes at our Beach Bash, an HTA Cookbook was suggested. We will have more information about that in the next Blast. Please start gathering your favorite recipes!!

LMS and Hawaiian Studies Our curriculum provider is making it possible for the 9th Grade Hawaiian History Course to appear on your child’s 9th grade course list. The online course will be supported by Mrs. Erin Smith at the Learning Center. She will be providing you with more details regarding this class over the next few weeks. Materials for the course will be sent from our curriculum provider. 11th Graders who need Hawaiian History: The course will be added this week to a few 11th grade students who will need the course in order to graduate.

FACE TO FACE Meetings (f2f) Please sign-up for F2F conferences with your child's HR teacher. F2F conferences will be held over the next two weeks and can be found on their individual Google Calendars. You should have received these from your HR teachers, and they will also be listed on the HTA Ohana website (www.htaohana.org).

Oahu Interactive Open House Come to HTA for more than just the run-of-the-mill open house. This event will be interactive! Come work with 2nd year students to get your OLS/LMS, LC and general HTA questions answered, Participate in Art, Dance, Creative Academy, Digital Photo, Science, and Japanese activities, just to name a few! Learn what the LC can do for you! See you then! Date: Thursday, August 13, 2009 Time: 12-3

Oahu Student Mentors Needed

Fun Fact: If you add up the numbers 1 -100 consecutively (1+2+3+4+5 etc) the total is 5050.

Second year HTA MS/HS Students, we need your help! On Thursday, Aug 13th from 1212-3pm we will have a new student mentoring time. We need you to come and help the new students individually by answering their questions about how to organize themselves, navigate the LMS, OLS, and other HTA programs, etc. If you would like to help out please email our PTSA student rep. [email protected] by August 10, 2009

Literacy Corner Welcome to Hawaii Technology Academy. My name is Jozette Linhart and I will be the Literacy Specialist, working with kindergarten through fifth graders. I have 13 years experience in teaching and have taught various grades as well as focusing on literacy.
