Sport & Leisure Activities Manager

Salary:

Sessional rate of; £390 week long holidays (5 nights) £195 weekends (2 nights) £95 1st time away from home events (1 night) Travel costs reimbursed Free training provided – attendance at the Level 3 training weekend is compulsory for this role. (17 – 19 April 2009, Birmingham)

Main purpose of post: •

The Assistant Project Leader in partnership with the Project Leader will be responsible for the day to day running of NDCS events, including the welfare of the volunteer team and all participants. Alongside the Project Leader you will be the person that everyone at the event looks to for motivation, support, and direction, therefore you must show knowledge and experience in the event, programming, diplomacy and health and safety.



To be on call 24/7 alongside the Project Leader to deal with incidents, accidents and emergencies on residential events.



To manage the volunteer team designated to the event, ensuring that volunteers fulfill their roles and support the children and young people in their care.



To achieve the expectations of deaf children and young people who attend, making sure that they benefit from the NDCS experience

Key tasks: 1. In partnership with the Project Leader be the lead person on site at the residential event for NDCS responsible for the health, safety and wellbeing of all participants. 2. To make sure that all children and young people who attend the event have a positive and inspirational experience 3. Supervising the volunteer team and ensuring they adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct. Conducting volunteer appraisals during the event and ensuring the welfare of volunteers including the provision of breaks. 4. Make sure that volunteers develop their own skills from the experience of volunteering, motivating them to do more. 5. To lead training for volunteers and centre staff prior to the children arriving in partnership with the Project Leader. 6. Coordinate all programme activities liaising with the activity staff ensuring that activities take place to schedule and that children and young people’s needs are met. 7. Ensuring children’s behaviour is of an appropriate standard and that the NDCS Events Promise is adhered to at all times. 8. Recording and administering medicine to participants who require it during the holiday, along with assisting with basic first aid and medical emergencies including accompanying injured children who need to go to hospital. 9. Liaising with parents, NDCS staff and activity centre staff to ensure the smooth running of the project. 10. Working with the Project Leaders to make decisions.

11. To effectively carry out all administrative tasks associated with the role, ensuring, for example, that incident and accident reports are submitted on time and that evaluation reports are satisfactorily completed. 12. To undertake training days provided by the project, including the annual Level three training weekend and regular top-up training days as required. 13. To promote the work of NDCS, providing children, young people and their families with information about wider NDCS services and sources of support, as appropriate 14. To be informed of and observe all policies relating to the scheme and National Deaf Children' s Society, including the NDCS Child Protection Policy, Emergency Response Plan and Events Procedures 15. To abide by and promote the Society' s policy of Informed Choice, its Vision and Values and Equal Opportunities Statements

THE NATIONAL DEAF CHILDREN’S SOCIETY PERSON SPECIFICATION Assistant Project Leader – NDCS Residential children’s events Essential 1. Deaf* or hard of hearing. Or a hearing applicant who can sign to a minimum of CACDP / Signature Level 2. 2. Experience of working on a residential camp with children and young people. 3. Experience of working with children in a supervised environment. 4. Organised with good verbal and written communication skills. Excellent communication skills with a variety of children and young people. 5. Possess leadership skills; experience in supervising and leading training an advantage. 6. Emotionally mature, willing to accept responsibility. 7. Exhibit the ability to place the needs of the participants above their own. 8. Team player that can relate positively to all staff, volunteers and participants. 9. Be in good health and able to meet the demands of the role. 10. A commitment to the NDCS Vision and Values statement, to working within an equal opportunities framework and to the NDCS policy of informed choice for deaf children and their families Desirable 1. CACDP / Signature Level 3 sign language skills 2. First Aid certificate or willing to obtain one prior to the event 3. NAPPI trained (Non-abusive Psychological and Physical Intervention).
