Input Devices:

Input devices of a computer are simply those devices, that are used to bring information into the computer. These are the peripherals used to provide data and control signals to a computer. It allow the users to communicate feed instruction and data to computer for processing, display, storage or transmission. There are several examples of input devices some common are explained below:

`

Keyboard: Keyboard is used to enter characters and functions into the computer system by pressing buttons or keys. It is the primary input device and external peripheral device in desktop system or it is visual in a tablet PC. They are very similar to the key boards of typewriters, with some addition keys. Most of the key boards have key between 80 -110 which includes typing keys, numeric keys, function keys, control keys.

 POINTING

DEVICES

 A pointing device is a type of hardware input device allows the user to move pointer on the screen.  It is also called sometimes as a “pointing tool“.  A pointing device allows the user to point at  manipulate any object or text on the screen.  Some common examples of pointing devices are as follows:

 MOUSE:

 It is an input device that allows user to control the coordinates and movement of the onscreen cursor/pointer by simply moving the mouse across a flat surface with hand.  Items can be selected or moved using the left mouse button, while the right button usually displays additional menus. Most of the mouse now a days used are optical which means they use a laser to detect or track movement across the surface. They can be wired or wireless.

 Trackball:  It is type of pointing input device.

 It consist of a ball held by a socket containing sensor to detect a rotation of ball about two axis.  It is an upside-down mouse with ball that sticks out.  The users roll the ball with thumb, fingers or palm of the hand to move a cursor.

 Trackpad:  It is input pointing device featuring a touchable sensor.

 It is a specialized flat surface capable of detecting finger contact.  A trackpad is also known as touch pad or glide pad.  It is the most efficient pointing device if space or portability is concerned.  Although the trackpad is capable of sensing the absolute position and the resolution is limited by size of trackpad.

HANDHELD DEVICES  A piece of computing equipment that can be used in the hands, such as smart phone, tablet, computer.

PEN:  In computing a stylus is a small-pen type instrument that is used to input commands to a computer screen mobile device or graphic tablets.  The stylus is a primary input device for personal digital assistance.  It is also called as S-Pen used in famous Galaxy Note Series manufactured by Samsung Electronics.  Pen like input devices which are larger than a stylus, and offer increased functionality such as programmable buttons, pressure sensitivity and electronic erasers are often known as Digital Pens.  It is used on Nintendo DS and 3DS handheld game e.t.c.

Touchscreen:  It is electronic visual display that incorporates an input device respond to touch.  This allows the users to select options from a screen by simply touching items.  A user can zoom in and out as well as rotate a picture simply by touching on screen.

 There are three types of touch screen technology which includes resistive, surface wave and capacitive.

Joy Stick:

 A joystick is an input device that can be used for controlling the movement of cursor or a pointer in a computer device.  It is also known as control column.  It is mainly used for gaming applications and sometimes graphics applications.  Joystick is mostly used when there a need to perform a direct pointing or when a precise function is needed.  There are different types of joysticks such as displacement joysticks, hand operated joysticks, finger operated joy sticks e.t.c.

 OPTICAL DEVICES  Optical storage devices use optical technology to save and retrieve data on discs.  Some of the common examples of input devices are as follow:

 Barcode readers:  A bar code reader is an electronic device that can read and output printed barcodes to a computer.  It is like a flat bed scanner.  It consists of a light source, a lens and a light sensor translating optical It is an electronic device that can read an output printed barcodes impulses into electrical ones.

 Scanners:  A scanner is an input device that scan documents such as photographs and pages of texts.  When a document is scaned,it is converted into digital format.  This creates an electronic version that can be viewed and edited on a computer.

 It can be connected to computer using many different interfaces. Although today is most commonly connected to a computer using a USB CABLE.

 AUDIO/VISUAL DEVICES:  Audio/visual devices are used to capture sound as well as videos.  The most common examples of audio and visual devices are as follows:

Microphone:

 Microphone is an input device.  It is usually digitally record to audio data like human voice.  It is used for various applications such as adding sound to a multimedia presentation or for mixing music.  Many software applications can accept data with microphones.

Digital Camera:

 It is an input device that takes pictures and store them as digital images.  Many digital cameras allow the user to edit pictures in it.

 Today Cameras are typically between 5 -20 megapixels  Many smarts phones and other devices also have built in cameras.  Digital cameras are also available in a wide range .
