ASSIGNMENT 1

A gas consisting of 50 mole% ammonia and rest air (@ 20°C, 25 psi), flowing at 420a kg./hr., is being scrubbed with water (@ 54°C, 1.1 atm.), flowing at 11b kmol/hr. in a counter-current manner. The column operates at 1atm. pressure throughout. Consider UNIFAC thermodynamic model.

Report the following:

1) Determine % of ammonia being scrubbed and % of water contamination in the gaseous product.

2) Examine the effect of absorbent flow rate on exiting ammonia concentration in both the products (separately).

3) Compute absorbent flow rate required for attaining 8c % scrubbing of ammonia. [Solve the problem separately using Radfrac absorbers- ABSBR1, ABSBR2. For each case, solve considering 4 stages, 10 stages and 15 stages separately. Compare the results each of these cases.
