Process and Purpose of Assessment The teacher will use survey questions prior to the beginning of the unit to gauge what key terms, SCOTUS decisions, and notable figures of the Civil Rights movement the students are or are not familiar with. The teacher will utilize a visual ranking tool for the students to, as a class, rank the importance of notable events of the civil rights movement to assess their understanding and not just name recognition of notable events. These events will include notable figures and SCOTUS decision as well. Students will create flash cards to help organize information on notable figures in the Civil Rights movement. These flash cards will include information about the notable events and/or SCOTUS decisions that person is associated with. These flashcards will help when playing the Guess Who? Group game. In groups students will play a game of Guess Who? with notable civil rights figures. The winners of each group will all play a winner’s circle round to determine overall winner and for other students to be able to listen to more of the descriptions. Each group will meet with the teacher once during the unit to assess research quality and answer any questions that may have arisen. Teacher will be able to assess progress and understanding in the subject matter and direct focus where necessary. Students will hand in a research paper outline prior to writing their first draft of their paper for teacher to review and provide feedback and guidance. The Equality Campaign is a group project where students will choose their own campaign to pursue based on present day issues. The research paper will ask students to compare/contrast their issue of today with the same in issue during the 1960s.
Peer Feedback – First Draft
Students will bring the first draft of their research papers to class the Friday prior to the due date. Each student will turn in their paper and the teacher will pass it out to another student at random. Each student will read and comment based on a structured assessment rubric. Then the teacher shall pass it out to another student. Each paper should receive feedback from (2) other students. This should give the student the opportunity to make any final corrections to their paper prior to the final due date.
