Grade Level: 3rd
Objective: • Students will be able to understand the uses of African masks • Students will be able to create a recognizable mask of African culture • Students will be able to recall three facts from the lesson Standards: • NA-VA.K-4.1 Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes • NA-VA.K-4.4 Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and cultures • NA-VA.K-4.6 Making connections between visual arts and other disciplines • 7.3.3 B. Geography 3rd Grade Identify the human characteristics of places and regions by their cultural characteristics Materials: • Felt pieces in black • Felt pieces in tan/white • Craft foam in brown • Colored or plain Raffia (if colored-earth tones) • Glue • Scissors Steps of Instruction: • Review with the class the current unit of World Cultures • Introduce the new culture of “Africa” • Introduce the African tradition of masks • Discuss the uses of the traditional masks in Africa • Discuss the traditional features of an African mask • Distribute handout of traditional African masks • Introduce the African Mask Craft • Describe the directions for the craft • Display the sample project and answer any questions • Have students collect the materials for the craft • Help students with craft completion Assessment: • Hand out an index card to every student • Students will write three facts that they learned about African masks during the lesson • Students will write their names on the back and hand them to teacher on the way out the door Accommodations: • Students with limited fine motor skills would have precut felt pieces that have adhesive on the back for easy application • Mentally disables students would be assisted by an aid or teacher and could use a checklist or have an example right in front of them Sources: • http://www.pde.state.pa.us/stateboard_ed/lib/stateboard_ed/pdfgeography.pdf • http://www.artyfactory.com
