Art II Oil Pastel Homework: You are What You Eat!

Objective: Create an observational drawing on 18x24 with oil pastels in which you respond to the idea “you are what you eat”.

Specifics: This entire drawing must be from OBSERVATION (no made-up stuff!). Choose your favorite...snack, meal, or guilty pleasure and arrange it in an exciting or interesting way to showcase its importance to you, while also considering the colors of the background/setting and how they work with the colors of your favorite food. Think about plate/glass/mug color, the color of the packaging of a product...EVERYTHING! Above all else (well, in addition to everything else) make a COOL COMPOSITION! Your composition should move our eye around...off the page then back on again. I don’t just want to see apples, bananas, and oranges in a bowl...think above and beyond, and most importantly, make it about YOU and your TASTE BUDS!

Presentation

Drawing has been completed on 18x24 paper. All objects and colors have been drawn from DIRECT OBSERVATION to create a sense of light, color, form, and space. Drawing clearly responds to the prompt “You are What You Eat”.

There is a clear sense of visual movement through your composition, created by where/how you placed your objects on your page and the colors used. The color choices you have made work well to compliment the other colors in the drawing.

Accurate colors have been mixed by layering the pastels over one another. Sighting has been used to achieve accurate proportions. You have avoided “overmixing” colors by scraping, when necessary, and lightly layering.

Drawing is evident of quality time, thought, and care. All areas of the drawing are resolved with equal effort and attention (there are no left-over or neglected areas of the drawing).
