Silverio, Ma. Alexandra C. SEC-41 Christianity had a profound connection on the medieval European mind. In lieu to this, architecture has become an influential way to express that deeply held devotion to God. As to what Marilyn Stokstad said, “emperors, kings, and popes spent their sources of materials on churches, altars, and liturgical equipment for them to attempt to glorify God and recreate a heavenly image of Jerusalem on Earth”. Because of this, various types of structures such as churches arose. Looking at the anatomy of churches, we can identify different expressions of artwork: sculptures, moldings that are used to decorate tympanums, doors, and columns, paintings, mosaics and stained glass. These artworks that are found in the church are greatly influenced by the Roman and Gothic style. As time passes by, the features of each artwork, most especially the sculptures and paintings, tended to be more naturalistic and detailed so that the spectators of the artwork wouldn’t miss an intricate feature. Meanwhile, mosaics and stained glass are also as impressive as the sculptures and paintings because it was very time-consuming, requires much planning and preparation, and laborious to create. From these descriptions about the various artworks that can be found inside the church, we can say that Filipino artists has also the power and ability to create big forms of art because as we all know, we have been colonized by 3 different countries, and with that, we got influenced and we adapted some of their cultures, including their style of architectural design which can be applied in an artwork.
