Room 11’s April 2019 Newsletter California: Then and Now Book and 3-D Due April 11 Students may turn in their California: Then and Now books and 3-D projects early, but no late books or projects will be accepted. The criteria for the report and 3-D projects were sent home with the acknowledgement. If you have misplaced your copy, you get the information from our class website at ctizumi.weebly.com. Open House is Thursday, April 11 Dearborn’s Open House will be on Thursday, April 11, 2019. Thursday, April 11, will be a regular school day, and Friday, April 12, will be a minimum day. Classroom visitations will be in the evening, and I look forward to seeing as many parents and students as are able to attend. Open House is also an excellent opportunity to visit the fourth grade classes to get an idea of what your child can look forward to for the next school year. Silent Auction While you’re on campus visiting our classrooms at Open House, be sure to stop by the Silent Auction in the auditorium. There will be many teacher activities, gift certificates, and class baskets you can bid on. Be sure to keep checking back during the evening to make sure you don’t get outbid! This is always a fun event and a big fundraiser for our school, so please participate if you can. If you have items you can donate (besides for our gift basket), I am sure the PTA would be most appreciative. Room 11’s Silent Auction Theme: Lottery Tickets Our silent auction class basket’s theme is Lottery Tickets. The silent auction is a major PTA fundraiser that helps provide field trip buses, art with Mrs. Mitchell, supplies, and more for our classes. If you can, please send a donation to help make our Silent Auction Basket one we can be proud of. We need lottery tickets or cash donations. Donations will go toward our Silent Auction basket and to reimburse Maxxwel’s mom for the purchase of the materials for our class project. Please donate, if you can. So far we have only four donations. Class Project Many thanks to Maxxwel’s mom, who has come up with a creative and unique idea for our class project. Be sure to buy a raffle ticket and maybe you will be the winner of our beautiful class project. Thank you, Mrs. Lopez, for making this project become a reality! It’s going to be awesome! Teacher Activity The third grade teachers will be hosting a Make-and-Take Slime activity, plus snacks and games on May 11 from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. We hope you will consider bidding on our teacher activity. Donations We could use donations of tissues and pencils for our class. Zearn Students have been working on Zearn after they finish Xtra math, and they really seem to like it! Zearn follows the Eureka Math program we have implemented. I started students with Module 4 (area). Zearn
can serve as review if your child is slower getting started with the program, or as a preview of the lessons to come, if your child is working faster than our daily math lessons. The log-in information is in your child’s planner. Los Angeles Zoo Field Trip Our Los Angeles Zoo field trip will take place on Wednesday, April 24. We will be leaving Dearborn at 9:30 a.m. and return at 2 p.m. Students will need a sack lunch with drink. Our plan is to have lunch at the Autry Museum (across from the zoo) and then walk to the zoo. Our entrance time is 11 a.m. Thanks to the parents of Giselle, Sofia, Derek, Juliana, and Hector for volunteering for this field trip. Possible Silk Road Field Trip to CSUN There is a possibility that we may be able to get tickets to the April 28 Silk Road performance at CSUN. If approved, we would need at least two volunteers to join us. The performance is at 12 p.m., so we would have an early lunch at Dearborn, then walk over to CSUN. We should be back well before school is dismissed at 2:10 p.m. Spring Break Homework Packet There will be a regular homework packet assigned over spring break. It will probably be due on Friday, April 26 or April 29, so students will have plenty of time to complete it. Smarter Balance Standardized Testing Your child will take part in standardized testing beginning in the third grade. To prepare, we have been working on reviewing standards in math and language arts, and students have been/will be taking practice tests. Our testing dates have not yet been finalized, but we will be testing in May. Absences/Truancies Absences that are not cleared within 7 days of the absence become truancies in your child’s permanent record. This may not be a big deal now, but it will show up as a pattern of truancies that began in elementary school if your child has excessive absences later in his/her school career.
