Good News from Wareham High School April 17, 2009 DECA

AUTISM AWARENESS Mrs. Cavicchi and Mrs. White are working on ways to help inform staff and students about autism. There is a contest for students, with a chance to win a $25.00 gift-certificate. The students need to write an essay or create a poster about autism that is fact-based and includes their thoughts about what would be the most difficult thing about being autistic. The entries are due April 17th, and will be judged then displayed throughout the school. Some teachers have already decided to give extra-credit to students who enter the contest.

DRESS CLOSET Members of the community and surrounding towns generously donated 387 dresses to the Prom Closet located at Wareham High School. The dress drive was held at the Old Company Store, and the closet is run by WomenAde of Wareham. The purpose of the closet is to provide formal and semi-formal dresses to students who need or want them. It is a way for students to have the luxury of a beautiful dress without the financial burden. The dresses are available to any student who wants to use them. The only requirements that students need to have the dresses cleaned before they return them to the high school. We also have various coupons available to help defray the cost of prom-related things. For more information, please contact Marie Cavicchi or Kelli White at WHS.

The goal is to collect 1000 items in three hours for the needy of Wareham. April 4th we collected cans form 9am to 12pm for the local food pantries, Damian’s Food Pantry, Senior Center, and Turning Point. We worked with The Boys and Girls Club director, Barbara Sullivan. We collected 264 cans from can soup to bottled juice to macaroni and cheese. The rest of the month we are collecting food here and at The Boys and Girls Club to increase the amount. There is a plastic can outside the club if anyone wants to donate, or they can give it to Lisa Ohman and Kim Scott. We had 12 students participate who held signs, and billboards, also students stood on the street corners to get people to stop. Thanks to Mrs. Franklin and Mrs. Cavicchi who stopped by.

Good News from Wareham High School April 17, 2009 JOB SHADOWING This spring, with the help of the Junior Achievement organization, WHS offered juniors and seniors an opportunity to participate a few job shadowing days. This program facilitates career/academic development by joining students and professionals to explore various fields of work. To be eligible for a job shadowing day, students must be in good academic, attendance and disciplinary standing.
