MINUTES -

Introductions were made Agenda presented and approved by J. Oleiro, seconded by J. Sim Moment of Silence Members rose in commemoration of the Day of Mourning – April 28 – to remember those workers that have died as a result of workplace events.

Presentation: The Blitzes, Presented by Joe O’Grady, Provincial Specialist (A), Ministry of Labour, Industrial Health and Safety Program, Occupational Health & Safety Branch, Operations Division. -

Joe displayed the MOL web site and highlighted where information regarding Blitzes can be found. Additional discussion was lead by Joe on a number of questions raised at this meeting. Joe encouraged all members to utilize the PPHSA and other specialized HAS contacts (e.g Electrical Safety Authority) in obtaining information from the overall Ontario Health & Safety System Partners.

Reports Treasurer Report Opening balance (Jan. 31 1/09) $2474.12 Revenue $0.19 (interest) Expenses $106.77 (meetings) Closing balance (Mar. 31/09) $2367.54 -

Executive Nominations There are still openings as follows: 1 Worker Representative A. Bacchus has volunteered. He has accepted the nomination and will stand as a representative until the AGM. At that point formal election will take place for that position. Anyone else interested to run, is asked to advise any Executive member. 1 Management Representative

Central Branch CT Report Workwell Audit Assistance A few firms are being assisted. Training & Consulting Ongoing work which represents the majority of time spent with clients. Industrial Hygiene Sampling Sound level surveys have been requested and conducted. Priority Firm Meetings The list and contacts are ongoing. -

Above reports approved by J. Oleiro & seconded by A. Bacchus PPHSA AGM and Conference Jerry reported the date is set – November 18, 2009 It will be held at one of the Toronto Airport area hotels Dan suggested moving the Branch AGM to October 28 An announcement to be made for notification

New Business: (Roundtable) Kruger Inc. Lift truck safety Introduced new key system (Keytroller?) and data logging capability to make improvements in driving habits to improve safety Supervisors required to reset certain conditions Readings are regularly monitored and actions taken based on trigger levels. Properly used the system raises awareness of driving habits and allows for corrective behaviour and overall improvement in the prevention of lift truck. Glove program Review of protective gloves being conducted to determine appropriate glove PPE for various tasks. Guarding Ongoing improvements being made to machinery and points of operation.

Kott Lumber Updated H&S Policy

Norampac Jellco H&S Week (May) Finalized presentations and invited PPHSA to deliver a presentation for that event. AED Looking at the logistics to ensure an AED is set up at their workplace.

Smurfit-MBI Image Pac Ongoing Improvements With almost 300 temporary workers and about 80 full time this division ranked among the top of all North American MBI locations for their safety record. Near miss reporting is used by JH&SC for regular reviews of plant incidents to assist with communication and ongoing learning.

Tencorr Packaging Celebrating 25 years of operation at the Toronto Plant Working with PPHSA on MSD (Ergo specialist to visit next month)

Corr-A-Box H&S promoted from the Top Down and included in every meeting. Installing new machine and will be going through H&S review MSD focus and working with PPHSA (Ergo specialist to visit next month)

Coleman Containers Temp. Agency Orientation Video Being reviewed by JH&SC for final acceptance Needed for temporary workers as well as new hires NEER Working on H&S Action Plan Updating H&S Manual Knives Developed training for workers handling cutting knives Dan suggested networking with others at this meeting as many plants have gone through various knife related handling issues.

Smurfit-MBI Burlington Lockout Program Procedures review and updates Near Miss Reporting Revamped procedures as part of Continuous Improvement

Norampac Etobicoke Peer Audits Regular auditing conducted to highlight opportunists for improvement Lockout Updated and simplified procedures to reduce the number of required locks.

Norampac Boxboard Peer Audits Regular auditing conducted to highlight opportunists for improvement H&S Program updated and revised
