Thinking With... Pastor Hammersten “For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for selfindulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Galatians 5:13-14

wrong. There were more feather boas, fishnet stockings, and leopard print stilettos at last year’s Gala than you’ll find at the Moulin Rouge. And what are these women up to you might ask? These church ladies? Well, they’re doing God’s work, that’s what.

My Gustavus friends and I have always loved listening to Van Morrison. For nearly 30 years we have listened to his romantic and soulful music, dancing around dorm rooms and summer nights spent imagining what this Romeo must look like in real life. When we finally saw him in person, the only words that described him that night were crabby and cantankerous. Not exactly what we had imagined all those years!

They’re the ones who throw birthday parties for the residents of Mount Olivet Homes and make sure that they have cake and roses. They’re the ones who cheer up persons with Alzheimer’s—pouring coffee and singing and smiling. They’re the ones who volunteer at the Gift Shop so residents have a place to go for a friendly visit and to buy a few goodies. They give scholarships to employees who care for our loved ones and they work their tootsies off at the Garage Sale raising money to provide computers for the disabled children at Rolling Acres so that they can communicate with their moms and dads. They are one fabulous group!

When you hear the name “Mount Olivet Homes’ Auxiliary” what comes to mind? Unless it’s a group of wild, loving, philanthropic, and sassy women, you may have imagined

Please support the Mount Olivet Homes’ Auxiliary (MOHA) and join in all this great work by attending these two upcoming events: Mount Olivet Homes’ Auxiliary 25th Annual Super

Devotions Pastor Kotzer The High Festival Acts 10:34-43 When I ask confirmands what is the most important festival of the Christian church, they usually tell me it’s Christmas. I can understand them overlooking Easter because of the commercialism emphasized at Christmas. For us adults, we dare not make the same mistake. The validity and very existence of the Christian faith is completely dependent on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The proof of the Resurrection is in the lives of people who believe and claim Christ as their risen Lord. The Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts were written by the same person. Luke covers Jesus’ earthly ministry, while Acts covers Jesus’ never-ending ministry. In Acts, Jesus is still present and at work as the risen Lord through the Holy Spirit. The Acts of the Apostles is not the story of the community after Jesus, but rather the story of the community under Jesus. Today is no different. The Lord is with you changing lives through the forgiveness of sins and life eternal. That’s why Easter is the Highest Festival.

Sunday Church School Thank you for giving “above and beyond” in your offering envelopes this Lent season! We will have a special stewardship announcement on May 3, to announce what we raised for our outreach ministries: • Jorge Chavez Secondary School in Miramar, Mexico; • Augustana Crossroad Preschool in Minneapolis; and • Casa Hogar Orphanage in Manzanillo, Mexico. Thank you for loving your neighbors at home and far away! Our donations will help build a new kitchen for the school in Mexico, provide lunches and toys for kids at the preschool in Minneapolis, and help provide needed supplies at the orphanage in Mexico. Our final unit is on Pentecost, a celebration of the Holy Spirit. Our key verse is Acts 2:2-3: “Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind….Then they saw what looked like fiery tongues moving in all directions, and a tongue came and settled on each person there.”

Volunteer Opportunities

2009 Dates Set Camp Noah Needs You! June 15-19, 2009 Mount Olivet is again sponsoring a team to provide Camp Noah to children who were affected by the flood last year in Iowa. The need is as great as it was for the children in the Gulf. Camp Noah is a fun-filled day camp designed to assist children in their recovery and to help them build resiliency skills. It is Bible-based and built on the story of Noah and the Ark.

This summer marks our eighteenth year in partnership with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. We are adding additional opportunities for volunteer involvement for those who have found difficulty volunteering during the week. We are scheduling three Saturdays--June 6, July 18 and August 8. These Saturdays will involve painting, siding, carpentry and roofing on existing buildings. We will also participate in a traditional week-long work camp July 8-10 at a new construction site of a two-story house in Chaska, about five minutes south of the West Campus. Habitat sites are very worker-friendly--no special skills are required to be a Habitat volunteer worker, only a willing attitude. Please mark your calendars now. More details regarding each of the volunteer opportunities will be forthcoming in the ensuing weeks.
