STEP ONE: GATHERING DOCUMENTS Request for OFFICIAL transcripts from ALL higher education institutions you have attended be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA) Office of Undergraduate Admissions 1220 Student Activities Building 515 East Jefferson Street Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1316 You may send official transcripts to OUA prior to beginning or submitting an online application. Prospective students who were interested in submitting transcripts before the Fall 2009 application was available were advised to set up a “Prospective Student File”. Because the Fall 2009 application is now available online, requesting a Prospective Student File is no longer necessary.
• OUA considers official transcripts that are sent directly from the educational institution you have attended or an official transcript in an unopened, sealed/stamped envelope that was "issued to student." Unofficial transcripts and opened envelopes are not accepted. • If possible, include "Second Career Nursing" and your UM ID (if known) on all transcripts sent to OUA • OUA MUST receive all application materials by the deadline to receive equal consideration. Create or update your resume or curriculum vitae (CV)
Determine what SCNP prerequisite coursework you have satisfied If you have questions about how your previous coursework will transfer to satisfy the School of Nursing SCNP prerequisites, please visit the School of Nursing Course Equivalents website • Is your institution or a specific course not listed on a Transfer Guide? Complete and submit a Course Description Review request form to the School of Nursing. The deadline to submit a Course Description Review request form and syllabi for the Fall 2009 application cycle is October 1, 2008.
• Did you complete your bachelor’s degree or any prerequisite courses outside of the US? Have a ‘course-by-course’ professional evaluation of your transcript performed (ex: www.wes.org or www.ece.org) and sent to the University of Michigan’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Then, complete and submit a Course Description Review request form, a copy of the ‘course-by-course’ professional evaluation, and the course
syllabus for each course you believe may satisfy a SCNP prerequisite to the School of Nursing. Prepare a draft of the Nursing Supplemental Form You may reference the 2008 version of the Nursing Supplemental Form as an example. For the Fall 2009 application cycle, the Nursing Supplemental Form must be completed entirely online. • REMEMBER: All prerequisites must be successfully completed before the start of the program. If you have outstanding prerequisite(s), it is essential to include the Term, Course Name/Number, and School where you plan to fulfill the prerequisite(s) • The School of Nursing Course Equivalents website may be helpful in creating and documenting a plan to complete any outstanding prerequisites. An incomplete Nursing Supplemental Form jeopardizes admission consideration.
International applicants must complete additional application requirements 1. TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB satisfactory score 2. Official documentation of secondary school attendance 3. Professional evaluation of secondary school documents (i.e. WES, ECE) The following OUA websites provide more information for international applicants regarding admission requirements and completing an application. It is strongly encouraged that international applicants arrange for the delivery of transcripts and professional evaluation well in advance to ensure materials are received by the application deadline.
STEP TWO: COMPLETING AN APPLICATION
The Second Career in Nursing Program (SCNP) application must be complete and submitted ONLINE. A handwritten or PDF version of the application will not be accepted. Please follow these steps to successfully complete an online application.
Review the OUA website Tips on Applying Online and the School of Nursing FAQs Visit the Office of Undergraduate Admissions website to begin an application REMEMBER: You may revisit, review, and edit your application as often as you would like, but you may only submit it one time. Once you have submitted your online application, you can not make changes. All SCNP applicants should complete an application by selecting “New Transfer,” “Cross Campus Transfer,” or “International Applicants.” PLEASE NOTE: “Second Degree” is an option for the College of Literature, Science, and Arts (LS&A); however, this is not the correct application option for the School of Nursing SCNP.
• Prospective New Transfers (including Flint and Dearborn): Select this choice if you have attended and/or graduated from UM Dearborn, UM Flint, or any other institution of higher education • Cross Campus Transfer: Select this choice if you have attended and/or graduated from UM Ann Arbor • Apply to the School of Nursing, Second Career Program for Fall 2008 (September) • Answer the remaining Preliminary Questions appropriately
Read all application instructions included in Step 1 Complete all required questions on the Application Form If you have any question about whether or not the information is required, the School of Nursing recommends that you error on the side of caution and include the information in your online application. This will eliminate the risk of the application being considered ‘incomplete’ and jeopardizing admission consideration. Please note that the following portions of the application are NOT required for the SCNP application: • High School Transcripts • Letters of recommendation or references • Professional school entrance exam (ex. GRE) • ACT/SAT scores
Complete the required Fall 2009 application essay questions Three essays are required for the Fall 2009 application; two are general questions and one is Nursing specific. All three essays can be uploaded or typed into the online application.
Complete the Nursing Supplemental Form The Nursing Supplemental Form is located on Page 7 of the online application. Please complete all required sections. If you plan to complete a credit by examination (CBE) to fulfill a prerequisite, please list “CBE” in the “Course Name/Number” section of the Nursing Supplemental Form. • REMEMBER: Credit by examination options are only available for admitted and waitlisted applicants.
Attach a resume or curriculum vitae (CV) On page 11 of the online application, you are able to upload or manually enter your resume or CV.
Review the OUA website Tips on Applying Online and the School of Nursing FAQs Complete the Application Inspector You must complete all required questions prior to submitting your online application. If you have questions or need technical assistance, please contact OUA at (734) 764-7433.
Pay the application fee
All applicants—with the exception of current UM students and UM alumni— are required to pay a $40 application fee with a credit card prior to submitting the online application.
Submit your application!
Remember to submit the application after you complete all required fields, run the application inspector, and pay the application fee. You will receive an e-mail verifying that OUA has received your application. You will be notified via mail (e-mail or letter) if any application requirements are outstanding. Incomplete applications will not be considered for admission.
Ensure that all requests for official transcripts have been processed and sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions • All transcripts and supplemental application materials must be received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by the application deadline to receive equal consideration. • Do NOT send transcripts or supplemental application materials (essays, Nursing Supplemental Form, resume) to the School of Nursing. Submitting application materials to the School of Nursing will delay the processing of your application and may result in an “incomplete” file.
STEP THREE: AWAITING AN ADMISSION DECISION Monitor the status of your application online Please allow at least 10 business days after you receive the confirmation email from OUA before inquiring about the status of your application online. To check the status of your application online: • Visit the OUA "Ask Us" website and type “status check” into the keyword search box. • Select “Status Check On Line” and follow the instructions provided to check the status of your application.
Check the School of Nursing Fall 2009 Admission Update website for upto-date information • PLEASE NOTE: The Office of Undergraduate Admissions ONLY communicates admission decisions in writing.
