History Indian Fashion Industry is at its infancy at the moment and has great potential to make the mark on the world stage. Fashion in India has thousands of years of tradition behind it. India has a rich and varied textile heritage where each region of India has its own native dress and traditional costumes. Fashion Industry is growing at a rapid pace with international developments, such as the India Fashion Week gaining popularity and annual shows by fashion designers held in major cities of India. In Indian culture, the body is invested with various meanings and reflected in its rich sculptural tradition decorating the body is yet another way of conveying meaning and personality.

In Indian history, the kinds of costumes and accessories worn can be seen to fulfil two criteria: simplicity and opulence. In either of the instances, the choice of clothing is dependent on the person's status, wealth and religious orientation. In ancient India the information about fashion is available from the sculptures as very few examples of costumes, textiles and jewelery have survived. In the Indus Valley Civilization (c. 3000-1500 BC), clothing tended to be simple where men wore loin-clothes while women were bare to the waist. Their Status was reflected in the kind of jewelery they wore; high-ranking women sometimes covered their bosoms themselves with jewels. It was because of Aryans that India had more complicated clothing consisting of the upper and lower garments was introduced, to which a cloak was added later. Generally pieces of cloth draped over the body in a style seen in many Indian costumes today. Indian Dhoti, the Scarf or Utterly, and the popular Turban are still visible and continue to be part of

Indian fashion. After the independence, Indian Fashion industry witnessed the effects of globalization. http://www.ncrcities.com/lifestyle/tailor.html Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla Group, described Abof (all about fashion) as an online one-stop fashion portal for apparel, footwear and accessories for men and women. Photo: Abhijit Bhatlekar/Mint

Mumbai: The Aditya Birla Group on Friday launched a new online fashion store, joining the growing trend of so-called brick-and-mortar companies seeking to tap a boom in e-commerce. The portal www.abof.com will offer shoppers brands from both the Aditya Birla Group and other companies. “We believe that fashion is a vertical that worked well for us for two reasons. One is that the vertical itself is fast growing,” Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Birla group, told reporters. “The other is the fact that we have substantial experience in the offline fashion space. So both of these factors put together make fashion a very obvious choice for us and what we are launching today is an e-commerce portal for fashion,” Birla said. Some analysts, such as financial services firm UBS, have said e-commerce sales can touch $60 billion by 2020 from less than $6 billion last year, driven by the manifold growth in smartphone users to more than 500 million. By the end of the calendar year, fashionwear, including apparel and footwear, is expected to be the largest retail category online, with sales of $3.9 billion, bigger than sales of electronics and consumer durables online at $3.5 billion, according to an April report by UBS Securities India Pvt. Ltd. Birla said estimates show that five years from now fashion will be a vertical with potential demand of $15 billion a year. On 9 October, Mint reported that Aditya Birla Group is set to launch its online fashion store Abof.com that will compete with the likes of Myntra, a Flipkart unit, and Rocket Internet-backed Jabong. In May, the Aditya Birla Group said it will consolidate its garments business into a single entity by carving out premium apparel maker Madura Garments Lifestyle Retail Co. Ltd from Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd and merging it with Pantaloons Fashion and Retail India Ltd. The merged entity will be India’s largest branded clothing company with annual sales of Rs.5,290 crore.

The consolidation will unlock shareholder value and give investors an opportunity to invest in the fast-growing fashion space through Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd, Birla had said. To be sure, Abof.com will be privately held by Birla in his personal capacity. The new portal will be targeted at the young and have a curated collection focusing on quality and not give discounts, executives of the company said. “To get an analogy from the cellphone world, we would like to be the Apple of the industry,” said Prashant Gupta, president and chief executive officer of Abof.com. Birla said the company will be closely held and did not disclose the investments that are going into it or the profit targets. He said it would be open to financial investors. While e-commerce is unlikely to contribute substantial revenue to the metals-to-telecom conglomerate, its valuation would be sizable. “There are no targets...we have some internal estimation but nothing that we can share,” Birla said. “This is not a business in which one can give specific targets. It is like a step into the unknown world.” Last year, Future Group, Shoppers Stop Ltd, DLF Brands Ltd and Arvind Ltd announced investments to strengthen their presence across shopping channels. Future Group is investing Rs.100 crore in its so-called omni-channel strategy and Shoppers Stop has announced a Rs.60 crore investment for this. “The launch of Abof.com does not come as surprise as all large corporate houses are entering the online fray,” said Ashish Jhalani, founder of eTailing India, an e-commerce knowledge platform. “Aditya Birla group will have a large play in the fashion category with all brands under one roof but they would face an uphill battle with likes of Myntra that has been concentrated in this category for years. But as the industry is still in an astronomical upward growth, they will be able to gain scale quickly,” Jhalani said. Birla, described Abof (all about fashion) as a one-stop fashion portal for apparel, footwear and accessories for men and women.

“The e-commerce sector is a sunrise sector from an investment point of view. While a lot has happened in the last couple of years, a lot more is yet to happen in this space,” Birla said. He said the Aditya Birla Group is already India’s largest fashion company through Madura Fashion and Pantaloons. “Therefore, it made sense for us to enter into fashion e-commerce to further strengthen our pole position in the business of fashion in India. We see the potential to build another billion dollar business of the group in this space,” Birla said.

Aditya Birla Group makes e-commerce space by launching fashion portal abof.com PRESS TRUST OF INDIA 17 OCTOBER 2015

   

With online retailers stealing a march over traditional formats, conglomerate Aditya Birla Group entered the e-commerce space by launching fashion portal abof.com. “The e-commerce sector is a sunrise sector from an investment point of view. While a lot has happened in the last couple of years, a lot more is yet to happen in this space”, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said at the launch.

“With abof.com, we aim to offer a wide but curated range of merchandise and a differentiated shopping experience that can compete with the best in the world. We see abof emerging as the most admired player in online fashion within the next three years”, he added. Abof.com (‘All about fashion’) is a one stop fashion portal for apparel, footwear and accessories for men and women who are discerning customers but not heavy discount oriented ones. The portal, that was launched after nine months of work, will not offer kids’ apparel. Aditya Birla Group is already present in the fashion space through Madura Fashion and Pantaloons. “Therefore, it made sense for us to enter into fashion e-commerce to further strengthen our pole position in the business of fashion in India. We see the potential to build another billion dollar business of the Group in this space”, he said.

Birla said the new venture will be complementary to its existing fashion business like Madura Fashion that houses brands like Allen Solly, Peter England, Van Heusen and Louis Phillipe, among others. He declined to divulge the investment in the new venture and said it is privately held. The online portal claims to have a first of its kind 3D virtual trial room with 95 per cent accuracy. Customers can instantly view themselves in any product by inputting their basic body proportions and the tool allows one to layer various garments to check out looks. “We may bring global brands later. We have about 5,000 PIN codes covered and have a warehouse at Bengaluru. We will have another warehouse in the NCR in the next three months”, abof.com President and Chief Executive Officer Prashant Gupta said. The portal will offer 7,000 products initially and the company plans to take the total to 20,000 in next few months. The company said half the products will be from the Group’s companies, while others will be sourced externally which will be curated by abof.com.

The Web has sites on every possible topic-current affairs, health, gaming, technology, cooking, travel, wildlife and just about anything else one can think of. So, what should your website be about? Just like in other businesses, it is important to gauge demand in this venture as well. A niche website where people are looking for specific information and products online has more chances of success. The demand for content on any topic can be seen by checking the search volume on search engines such as Google. Let us assume that you want to create a website on cooking. The first step will be to search for related keywords, such as "cooking" and "recipes", on GoogleKeyword Tool. By default, the tool shows the search volume for the main keyword as well as synonyms and different versions of the keyword. To know the search volume of the exact keyword (in the same order of words), you can set the "match type" option to "exact match". You will find that there are several related keywords with significant search volumes. For example, on Google, average monthly search volumes of "Indian vegetarian recipes" and "healthy recipes" are 10,000 and 1,65,000, respectively. This means there is a huge demand for articles on "cooking". If you register with the Google AdWords advertising service, its keyword tool will also show you the average cost per click, or CPC, of ads for keywords. This is the average cost of ads for that keyword. Around 70% of this money will go to the website on which the ad is clicked. A high CPC means you earn more per click. Most visitors will discover your website through search engines, primarily Google. Before you make a site, check the competition that you will face from other sites in Google search results. You can use free or paid tools, such as Traffic Travis and Market Samurai, to gauge the competition. Note keywords with decent search volumes and low competition.

Keyword Match The traffic volume for a specific match type is an approximation of the traffic that a keyword gets in a month on Google with that match type. To check, go to: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. Broad match: Sum of the search volumes for the keyword idea, related grammatical forms, synonyms and related words. Phrase match: Search volumes for terms that include the whole phrase. Exact match: The search volume for that keyword idea. Website Branding Once you have finalised the niche and have a set of keywords for content, it is time to get a domain name (Web address). You can search for available domain names on websites of domain registrars such as GoDaddy.com and NameCheap.com. Registering a name costs Rs 100-500 per year. Look for a domain that is related to your niche and is memorable. The name should be short and brand-able. If it includes your main target keyword, search engines may give it an extra point. If you want to create a site for Indian recipes, try a name like FreshIndianCooking.com or PureIndianCooking.com. There are various domain extensions such as .com, .org and .net. You can also register a domain name with country-specific extensions such as .in (India) and .us (US). Try to get a.com extension as it is still widely associated with the Net. Go for .net and .org only if you cannot find a suitable domain with a .com extension. Buy domains with country-specific extensions only if you intend to target people from that country. Creating Websites After registering a domain name, it is time to buy web-hosting space and create a website. Unlimited web-hosting space can be purchased for Rs 4,0005,000 per year. You can use web-designing softwares, such as Nvu and KompoZer, for creating sites in HTML. Alternatively, you can install a content management system (CMS)-a software for creating websites-such as

WordPress on your webhosting space. WordPress is one of the most easytouse CMSes and works well for beginners. We will discuss creating and managing a site using WordPress. The basic principles apply to all sites. Installing WordPress takes a few clicks if your web host gives you access to cPanel, a hosting management software. cPanel will have the option of installing WordPress using Fantastico De Luxe and Quick Install. Click on one of the icons, enter the details of your site, and WordPress is ready for use. After installing WordPress, you need to customise it for your website. Go to the "Appearance" menu on the WordPress dashboard and browse through themes available under the "Install Themes" option. You can also download themes from the Internet. Get themes only from reputed sites. You also need to install plug-ins to extend WordPress' functionality. This can be done through the "Plug-in" tab in your WordPress dashboard. Adding Content WordPress comes with dummy posts and pages that you must delete first. Posts refer to regular content which normally appears on your blog or site homepage in a chronological order. Pages do not appear in your blog posts index. So, include hyperlinks to these in your website's navigation menu or sidebar. Start by creating an "About" page, which provides information about you and your website. You can create a pseudonym for your Web identity. You can also create a page with a contact form (using plug-ins) through which your users can get in touch with you. To keep your personal email address private, create email addresses for your site through cPanel and forward the mails to your main mail address. For example, you can create email addresses [email protected] and contact@ mywebsite.com. Do not forget to add links to your pages in the navigation menu on your website. After adding the initial pages, you need to add blog posts to your website. In WordPress, blog posts are organised in categories and tags. Try to keep the number of categories limited. A recipe website, for instance, can have content under "Vegetarian Recipes", "Salads", "Healthy Recipes" and "Indian Recipes"

headings. Links to these can be added to the main navigation menu through the WordPress dashboard. You can add any number of tags to each blog post. While starting a website, keep some posts ready and publish one or two daily for a week. If you do not want to write, hire freelance writers through sites such as Elance.com and Freelance.com (Rs 150-500 per article). It may seem a huge cost, but after your site starts getting visitors, you will recover the money within a couple of months. Increasing Visibility Search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, are the main source of visitors. This makes search engine optimisation (SEO) important. Search engines analyse the content of a webpage and hyperlinks from other webpages to determine its importance. Your content is shown in search results on the basis of this analysis. If a search engine considers your webpage the best match for a search term, it will appear on the top in search results. Search engines use software tools called Web spiders to discover (called crawling) and index webpages. Search engine spiders discover new websites through links from existing webpages in its index. You can also use submission forms to inform search engines about your site, but it can take a while before it appears in search results. For faster indexation, create hyperlinks from existing websites that are frequently crawled by search engine spiders. A quick way is to share links on Twitter, which search engines crawl Harsh Agarwal is a professional blogger who started in 2008 and earned his first $100 a few regularly. You can also join online months later. Agarwal, who holds an engineering forums and include a link to your site degree, left his regular job at a major technology in your forum signature. too, is an important source of traffic. Adding social media buttons will allow users to share website content. You can use a plug-in or free services such as AddThis.com and ShareThis.com to add a social media button. You should create a Facebook page for your website and add this to your site through a widget. Creating an account with Twitter.com and sharing your content also helps. Search engines track hyperlinks (also called backlinks) from other sites to your webpages to judge the importance of your content. An easy way to get backlinks to your webpages is by leaving comments on blogs and websites. Being active on forums will also get you backlinks. Adding links to your existing webpages in new articles too will improve the visibility of your content. Monetising Websites Once you have a website with some content and traffic, it is time to get paid for the effort. Most websites depend on advertising revenue. You can join online advertising networks such as Google AdSense, Infolinks, Kontera, BuySellAds and Chitika for placing ads on your site. Advertising networks pay you when someone clicks on ads shown on your site. Some advertisers also pay you on the basis of the number of times their ad is shown to the users. Google AdSense, the largest advertising network, can get you $5-25 per 1,000 webpage views. You can keep track of traffic to your website through free services, such as Google Analytics and StatCounter. Information on the number of visitors and their profile, keywords bringing traffic to your site, etc,

can be used to improve your website and create more user-friendly content. Affiliate programmes offer a good opportunity to tap website traffic, particularly in niches such as fashion and gadgets. Amazon Associates is an affiliate programme of shopping portal Amazon.com. You are paid 4-15% of sales generated through your affiliate links. You can also join affiliate networks such as Commission Junction, LinkShare, ShareASale and ClickBank and promote products of multiple entities. If you are enterprising, you can sell your own products, such as e-books, or services. Though several websites make thousands of rupees per month, the income depends on their popularity. You are unlikely to make money in the short term, but if you persist and keep adding useful content, your website can generate decent income. Create a one-year plan and keep track of costs and income. Keep learning the tricks of the trade and you can soon own a money-making website.

Selecting the best revenue options for Internet startups I'm often contacted by site owners with an idea for a new site who are trying to work out how much revenue they'll be able to raise depending on the number of visitors to their site. There's no simple answer to this, but to help, several years ago I created this spreadsheet model which also features in my books as an activity to help students working on this topic. It shows the main parameters you need to set - blue fields and it works how the revenue earning - orange fields.

The Site Ad revenue model If you plug in some average figures for pay-for-performance-based advertising options like cost per click or cost per action approaches li as shown below it shows why fixed fee and CPM models tend to be preferred by publishers.

It also shows that you need substantial traffic to to make much money through advertising. At a CPM Of £10 with 2 ad units on the site, you would make just £4,000 per month even with a million page views per month for which you serve paid ads to 20% of the audience. Set this to 100% if you are selling all your ad inventory, as for example through Google Adsense.

To use this model different Internet site revenue models and income potential use our online revenue model spreadsheet - see Ad Revenue model worksheet (for Expert members). This includes a range of Internet planning models including a way of assessing Internet revenue sources - this is on worksheet 3.

How to use the revenue model calculator This spreadsheet can also be used by owners of existing sites like publishers to estimate ad or affiliate marketing revenue from a site or section of site. It allows these parameters to be set:    

% inventory - proportion of ad space sold on sites Number of ad units CPM - Cost per thousand impressions for ad volume deals CPC - Cost Per Click for Pay Per Click Deals

Total revenue for each ad unit or container and corresponding Earnings per 100 clicks (EPC) or Earnings per thousand page views (eCPM) are calculated automatically. The limitation of the model is that it assumes the same model across the whole site. It would be straightforward to modify it for different sections.

The 8 Internet revenue model options For a publisher or other media site owner, I would identify eight types of revenue model which are

possible online. Let me know of any I'm missing Of course, transactional sites have the option of these also in addition to sales - online, everyone is a media owner.

1. Revenue from subscription access to content A range of documents can be accessed for a period of a month or typically a year. For example, I subscribed to FT.com for access to the digital technology section for around ‚ 80 GBP per year a few years ago. Smart Insights Expert members have an annual subscription in this form.

2. Revenue from Pay Per View access to document Here payment occurs for single access to a document, video or music clip which can be downloaded. It may or may not be protected with a password or Digital Rights Management. For example, I've paid to access detailed best practice guides on Internet marketing from Marketing Sherpa.

Digital rights management (DRM) The use of different technologies to protect the distribution of digital services or content such as software, music, movies, or other digital data.

3. Revenue from CPM display advertising on site (e.g. banners ads and skyscrapers). CPM stands for "cost per thousand" where M denotes "Mille". The site owner such as FT.com charges advertisers a rate card price (for example 50 GBP CPM) according to the number of its ads shown to site visitors. Ads may be served by the site owners own ad server or more commonly through a third-party ad network service such as Google AdSense as is the case with my site.

4. Revenue from CPC advertising on site (pay per click text ads) CPC stands for "Cost Per Click". Advertisers are charged not simply for the number of times their ads are displayed, but according to the number of times they are clicked. These are typically text ads similar to sponsored links within a search engine but delivered over a network of third-party sitesby on a search engine such as the Google Adsense Network. Typical costs per click can be surprisingly high, i.e. they are in the range GBP 0.10 to "‚ GBP 4, but sometimes up to GBP 40 for some categories such as "life insurance" that have a high value to the advertiser. The revenue for search engines or publishers from these sources can also be a fair proportion of this. Google Network Revenues through Ads generate around one third of Google's revenue. For me, the Google's content networks are one of the biggest secrets in online marketing with search engines such as Google generating over a third of their revenue from the network, but some advertisers not realising their ads are being displayed beyond search engines and so not served for this purpose. Google is the innovator and offers options for different formats of ad units including text ads, display ads, streamed videos and now even cost per action as part of its pay per action scheme.

5. Revenue from Sponsorship of site sections or content types (typically fixed fee for a period) A company can pay to advertise a site channel or section. For example, bank HSBC could sponsors the Money section on a media site. This type of deal is often struck for a fixed amount per year. It may also be part of a reciprocal arrangement, sometimes known as a "contra-deal" where neither party pays.

A fixed-fee sponsorship approach was famously used by Alex Tew in 2005, a 21-year-old considering going to University in the UK who was concerned about paying off his university debts. This is no longer a concern since he earned $1,000,000 in 4 months when he set up his Million Dollar Homepage. His page is divided into 100-pixel blocks (each measuring 10x10 pixels) of which there are 10,000 giving 1,000,000 pixels in total. Alex spent £50 on buying the domain name (www.milliondollarhomepage.com) and a basic web-hosting package. He designed the site himself but it began as a blank page.

6. Affiliate revenue (CPA, but could be CPC) Affiliate revenue is commission based, for example I display Amazon books on my personal blog site DaveChaffey.com and receive around 5% of the cover price as a fee from Amazon. Such an arrangement is sometimes known as Cost Per Acquisition (CPA ). Increasingly this approach is replacing CPM or CPC approaches where the advertiser has more negotiating power. For example, in 2005 manufacturing company Unilever negotiated CPA deals with online publishers where it paid for every e-mail address captured by a campaign rather than a traditional CPM deal. However, it depends on the power of the publisher who will often receive more revenue overall for CPM deals. After all, the publisher cannot influence the quality of the ad creative or the incentivisation to click which will affect the Clickthrough rate on the ad and so the CPM.

7. Subscriber data access for e-mail marketing The data a site owner has about its customers is also potentially valuable since it can said different forms of e-mail to its customers if they have given their permission that they are happy to receive email either from the publisher or third parties. The site owner can charge for adverts placed in its newletter or can deliver a separate message on behalf of the advertiser (sometimes known as list rental). A related approach is to conduct market research with the site customers.

8. Access to customers for online research An example of a company that uses this approach to attract revenue from surveys is the teen site Dubit. Considering all of these approaches to revenue generation together, the site owner will seek to use the best combination of these techniques to maximize the revenue. To assess how effective different pages or sites in their portfolio are at generating revenue, they will use two approaches. The first is eCPM, or effective Cost Per Thousand.

This looks at the total they can charge (or cost to advertisers) for each page or site. Through increasing the number of ad units on each page this value will increase. This is why you will see some sites which are cluttered with ads. The other alternative to assess page or site revenue generating effectiveness is Revenue per click (RPC), which is also known as Earnings Per Click (EPC). This is particularly important for affiliate marketers who make money through commission when their visitors click through to third party retail sites such as Amazon, and then purchase there.
