HISTORY AND ANIMANIA 2004 In 2003, two years after its inauguration, Animania became the largest Anime and Japanese Pop-Culture Convention to be staged in Australia. WHAT IS ANIMANIA? Animania began in 2002 as the First Japanese Animation Convention ever to be held in NSW. It followed in the wake of student run conventions in Melbourne and Adelaide, as well as the Western Pop Culture Convention in Sydney. Animania is an annual convention, which brings together thousands of young people to immerse themselves in the culture that surrounds Anime and the Japanese Culture. Animania is the brain-child of Founding Chair & President of Animania, and Founding President of Sydney University Anime Society (SUAnime) [www.suanime.org], Louis Lee; and the Founding Treasurer of Animania and Founding Vice President of SUAnime, Dominic Dexter So. The First Convention took place in 2002 at The University of Sydney s Eastern Avenue Auditorium and Theatre Complex, this was run by SUAnime with support from The University of Sydney Union and The University of Sydney. In 2003, the Chair fell on the Founding Webmaster of SUAnime, and then President of SUAnime, Damien McMonigal. At its inauguration, the event was attended by more than 500 people and was widely considered by those that attended as well as those that organised it to be a resounding success. The plan in 2003 was to build on that success.
20044
In 2003, Animania was a joint venture by SUAnime and AnimeUNSW. This allowed the scope and size of the project to be greatly increased. The venue was almost filled to capacity on the first day. In 2003 the event was attended by more than 1,500 people and those that attended are eagerly waiting a bigger, better and more extensive Convention in 2004. As the scope of the Convention increased, so too did the management structures. Animania had grew beyond the control of the University Club environment. In 2004, Animania moved to an Organisational Level after much deliberation.
OCTOBER 23 & 24
In 2004, the Animania Executive Board consists of: Louis Lee, Chair (Founding Chair) Damien McMongial, Deputy Chair (2003 Chair) Dominic Dexter So, Treasurer (Founding Treasurer) Drew Geary, Secretary (one of the key volunteer personnel from the inception of Animania) In 2004, the Convention is expecting attendance numbers to reach between 5,000 to 10,000 people. Animania has now moved to a new venue that can support the huge numbers expected this year. It will be staged in “Sydney City Town Hall” in the Heart of Sydney CBD at one of Sydney s Unique Venues. Expect the Convention in 2004, this year, to be bigger, better and more extensive! And with your support, this will be possible. ~1~
