Angles Intersecting Segments and Lines When two segments or lines intersect, their intersection creates an angle. In some cases, the angles formed have special relationships. For example, two angles whose sum is 90o are called complements or complementary angles. Below, angles x and y are complements of each other.

Angles x and y are complements.

Two angles whose sum is 180o are called supplements or supplementary angles. Below, angles x and y are supplements of each other.

Angles x and y are supplements.

When two lines intersect, vertical angles are congruent (have the same measure).

If two lines are parallel and are intercepted by a transversal, corresponding angles are congruent, alternate interior angles are congruent, and same-side interior angles are supplementary.

Corresponding angles are congruent. Alternate interior angles are congruent.

Same-side interior angles are supplementary.
