What do you think? Mistletoe is a plant that says green all year, so people decoratecan with it. If two people who love eachother stand under mistletoe they traditionally hug or kiss.

Many Americans celebrate Christmas by giving presents to others. 4

An American Christmas Many families decorate a Christmas tree. The presents go under the tree. On Christmas day, people give the presents under the tree to friends and family. 5

An American Christmas The tradition of giving presents started with Saint Nicolas.

Saint Nicolas lived in Germany in 1285. He gave presents to children who were very poor. 6

One day, some children had left their stockings to dry on the fireplace. Saint Nicolas quietly left presents for the children in their stockings. 7

An American Christmas Today, American children still leave their stockings by the fireplace for Saint Nicolas.

Amercian writer, Washington Irving published a story about Santa in 1809. His book made Santa famous in America, and all over the world. 10

An American Christmas A few years later, in 1823, Clement Clarke Moore wrote a poem called The Night Before Christmas.

An American Christmas The Night Before Christmas tells that Santa goes all around the world giving presents to children.

The poem says that Santa flies in a sleigh. 12
