Update Space

Moon crash a yawner for spectators WASHINGTON (AP) — NASA's great lunar fireworks finale fizzled. After gearing up for the space agency's much-hyped mission to hurl two spacecraft into the moon, the public turned away from the sky Friday anything but dazzled. Photos and video of the impact showed little more than a fuzzy white flash. In social media and live television coverage, many people were disappointed at the lack of spectacle. One person even joked that someone hit the pause button in mission control. Yet scientists involved in the project were downright gleeful. Sure, there were no immediate pictures of spewing plumes of lunar dust that could contain water, but, they say, there was something more important: chemical signatures in light waves. That's the real bonanza, not pictures of geyser-like eruptions of debris, the scientists said. The mission was executed for "a scientific purpose, not to put on a fireworks display for the public," said space consultant Alan Stern, a former NASA associate administrator for science. RIVALRY REVISITED Stangs win long-awaited Cache Valley showdown — B1

Obama's Nobel Prize a shocker WASHINGTON (AP) — When Arizona State University declined to give President Barack Obama an honorary degree, saying it was too early in his presidency, Obama essentially agreed. "I come to embrace the notion that I haven't done enough in my life," Obama told the class of 2009 last May. On Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee begged to differ. It stunned the world by awarding Obama the Nobel Peace Prize, citing global optimism fostered by calls for peace and cooperation by

a president in office less than nine months. The committee also praised Obama's pledges to reduce the world's cache of nuclear arms, ease American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthen the U.S. role in combating climate change. Obama's reaction was about the same as it was in Arizona. "I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations," See NOBEL on A8

Valley poverty I

n the United States, "poverty" is measured by a set of federal guidelines, which are used to determine whether individuals are eligible for certain government programs. For a family of three in Utah, for example, the total household income can be no more than $18,310 to fall below the poverty line. For any given household, if the total family income is less than the threshold, both the family and each member of it is considered to be in poverty. Following is some information from 2009 Report on the State of Poverty in Utah, a collaboration between the Utah State Community Services Office and the Community Action Partnership of Utah.
