Class of 1979 – 40 years We were toddlers when JFK was shot and killed. Too young to remember when it happened, but we grew up with the story. We were 8 years old, sitting on the floor and watching TV when Neil Armstrong took the first step on the Moon. We had images of the Vietnam War on the nightly news. I never understood young adults spitting on our soldiers when they returned and calling them "baby killers". That angered my young heart. I didn't quite understand the hippy generation and flower power, even though we were there, we were just kids. In high school, we lived the shift from bellbottom jeans and tie-dye T-shirts to straight-leg Levi 501 jeans. The boys had come back to school with shorter, clean-cut styles. The girls had a chance to wear longer, more romantic skirts that had come back in style. Farrah Fawcett definitely had an influence on the girl's hairstyles. There was nostalga nods to the 40s and 50s in fashion. We watched the first Star Wars in theaters. Charlie's Angels, Three's Company, Mork and Mindy and M*A*S*H were some of the TV shows that we liked to watch. There wasn't a lot of time for TV or movies with the many basketball games and homework. It was the height of Disco. Fun songs like "I will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor and "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer, Michael Jackson and the Commodores. The Eagles and Pink Floyd were still popular. However, if I remember correctly, most of my classmates didn't like Disco or Pop, but preferred Country Music. I was never a fan of the old country music, but in 1979, a lot of country had added some rock to it. Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Linda Ronstadt were favorites. "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by The Charlie Daniels Band was popular in pop, rock and country. Ours was the first class to use the new gym. Before our senior year, the original gym was a great old gym with wooden bleachers that were almost two stories tall. Hardly any sideline space. The community had finalized raised the money and backing to build a brand new larger gym. We had our homecoming, prom, pep rallies, plays and graduation in that gym. When we returned for a visit at our 20th reunion, we were a little surprised by how worn that "brand new" gym looked. Then, of course, it would be with hundreds of kids using it for 20 years. Time kind of works that way. I'm not sure if they still use that gym or if they have replaced it with an even newer gym. Our senior year of 1979 was full of fun memories. Homecoming was a blast, with a bonfire, parade, basketball games, which we won both boys and girls games, (that was our Homecoming). Kathy Hight (now Klemme) was Homecoming Queen. There was the Homecoming Dance in the "Old Gym" for fun. Our pep rally was crazy with fun skits. There was even a skit with a prank of treating our basketball players with caramel "onion" apples. The gym was full of laughter and "tears". We took our Senior Trip to Florida and New Orleans. Daytona Beach, Disney World, Pensacola Beach, (receiving the worst sunburn ever). That was the year that the movie "Jaws" was filmed at Pensacola Beach. It was the buzz around town. Thank goodness we didn't see that movie until after we visited the beach. In New Orleans, we were given tours of the grand old southern homes and the beautiful French Quarter with the artists at work and the jazz musicians. It was a great trip. To those of the class of 1979, please consider coming to the Alumni Banquet! And watch for news about reunion plans. And we're hoping to come together again to watch Hallsville's football team this fall at the Hallsville High Football Homecoming. Something we never got to experience. See you then. Christina (Rice) Knapp – Class of 1979 – Hallsville High School.
